The Law of Throwing Leftover Food in Islam
As throwing leftover food becomes a commonplace in everywhere. It is not only because that food has been stale or inedible, even some people throw away food that was a decent meal. They did that because they were satiated or dislike the food. Or we often see that some people wasted food in special events, such as in birthday party.
When there was someone who had birthday, some of people took a tart cake. They threw that cake to the face of someone who had birthday. Of course, they did worthless thing, who want to eat a cake which has thrown to face or fallen on the floor? Is it a terrible waste? One of behavior that was hated by Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala.

Throw away food is included a Satan’s friend
As the hadith of the Apostle :
“Indeed Allah hates you because three things: “his words” (false news), waste of wealth and much asking.” (Bukhari)
Allah will hate us if we threw leftover food. Because it is included in the waste of wealth. You will be a Satan’s friend if you threw your leftover food. As Allah said :
وَلا تُبَذِّرْ تَبْذِيرًا إِنَّ الْمُبَذِّرِينَ كَانُوا إِخْوَانَ الشَّيَاطِينِ
“And do not spend wastefully. Indeed, the wasteful are brothers of the devils.” (Al-Isra : 26 – 27)
From Abu Hurairah, he said that The Apostle Salallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said,
“Indeed Allah has three things for you and He will be wrath if you did three things. Allah is pleased if you worshiped to Him and you did not associate Him with anything and (Allah wills) if you held on the ropes of Allah and you gave advice each other against the ruler who govern your affairs. Allah will be angry if you were busy with rumors, told a lot of useless questions and wasted wealth.” (Muslim)
Appreciate The Food
Rasulullah Sallahu ‘alaihi wasallam said :
“Do not guilty yourself by using dirt or bone, because the bone is your brother’s food from the jinn.” (Turmudzi)
Rasulullah Salallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam comanded us to appreciate food of jinn Muslim. The food of jinn Muslim must be appreciated by us, moreover our food.
Not only The Apostle who commanded us to appreciate the food, but all of Muslim scholars, too.
- Yahya bin Said told that Sufyan at Tsauri hated someone who put a bread under the plate. (Bukhari)
- Hasan al Bashri told about the law of Allah to someone who never apreciated the food : “There is a villager whom Allah Suubhanahu wa Ta’ala has given in the field of sustenance. Until they do istinjaa with a bread. Finally Allah sends hunger disease until they eat the food that they are occupied.” (Ibn Abi Syaibah)
- It is said in a history from Ja’far bin Muhammad, from his father, Muhammad al-Baqir (Abu Ja’far), he said, in the past, Bani Israil ever did istinjaa with a bread, Until Allah sent hunger to them, until they looked for some food in their toilet. (Ibnu Abid Dunya – Islah Mal – no 344)
- Al-Hafiz Ibnu Hajar al-Asqalani told that There is no ulama who said “may humiliate bread” such as step on it, throw leftover bread into recycle bin or others. And no ulama gave advices to glorify bread too much, such as kiss bread. Even Imam Ahmad radhiyallahu ‘anh affirmed he hated kissing glorify bread (in order to glorify it).
It is not only because it is prohibited by Islam, but it is about morality problem. How we can throw food easily but there are still more over 920 millions people outside who get hunger?
Based on the notice of the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), there are around 1,3 billions food wasted in a year. Base on World Resources Institute, the environmental research Institute, behind 1,3 billion tons of food wasted a year in the world, there are 45 trillion gallons of water that was also wasted.
The at figure represents 24 percent of water that was used for agriculture. That sector uses 70 percent of clean water in the world. So, there is a big waste that were done only from the activity of throwing away leftover food, is not it?
Whereas Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala does not love the exaggeration, as His words :
“O children of Adam, take your adornment at every masjid, and eat and drink, but not excessive. Indeed, He likes not those who commit excess.” (Al-A’raf : 31)
