Prohibition during Menstruation in Islam Women Must Know
Worship is an obligation to all adult Moslem and Muslimah or those who are baligh. However, worship cannot always be done due to the condition of the biologic body which is menstruation or Haidh. Here are some explanations related to prohibitions for Muslimah women during Haidh;
The meaning of Haidh Biologically
Haidh or it is also called menstruation is a biological process occurs to women. In English, menstruation comes from word menses means a period of Haidh. It is common happened to women ages 12-13 to get menstruation; it can be earlier or late depends on the hormonal of each woman and it will continues until the period of menopause which is age 40 above. When women get menstruation, she will phlebotomize from her genital (vagina). It occurs every month as a regular and a routine process depends on the condition of the body itself. The process occurs due to ovarian in uterus are matured within the period once in a month in about 5-10 days.
In fact, fertilization will happen when ovum meets sperm in ovarian and being pregnant is as the result. However, when ovum was not fertilizing the matured ovarian decays in the uterus wall and became dirty blood (black redness, redness, brown until it stops). The process of decays itself is known as Haidh or menstruation.
During the process, it is common to see that most women are sensitive an emotional. It is caused of the changing of the hormonal process in her body and also her psychological condition. Sometimes, it can make women emotionally or angry without reasonable reasons though it is not recommend as the nature of anger in Islam. Therefore, women need solution how to solve it so it will not affected to her activities.
The meaning of Haidh in Islam
“They asked you about Haidh. Said,” Haidh is filth.” Therefore, you shall avoid women when she was Haidh and do not be close to them before they are immaculate. And when they are in chaste condition, then be interfered to them at the place as Allah commandment to you. Indeed, Allah loves remorse and saintly people.” (QS. Al-Baqarah 222).
It is clearly mentioned that Haidh (blood of Haidh) are assumed as dirty blood and women are not in chaste condition.
Usually haidh comes in black, red until brown and smelly. It is continuously come out together as we are pee unconsciously so that is the reason whereas women are told as not in chaste condition. Theologians mentioned that the period ended when haidh is clearly stopped in a clean condition. Once, Aisyah was narrated from Hadist Bukhari,
” Do not in rush before it seen white mucus which is white fluid that comes out from Haidh.” (HR. Bukhari).
Prohibition for Muslim Women during Haidh in Islam
Haidh is another clausal that should be discussed more details in Islam. All spouses of Muhammad are also having Haidh and in some hadiths, it have being mentioned that his spouses are avoiding kind of activities prohibits as it is in Qur’an and Rasulullah. Here are some of prohibitions in Islam to avoid the bad impact as in function in Islam.
“From Aisyah AR,”
Does she shall not pray and fasting when she is haidh?”It is the weakness of the women religion.”(Muttafaqun ‘alaih, HR. Bukhari Muslim).

“Do we need to qodho our worship when we are in chaste condition?” Aisyah said, “Are you a Haruri? Previously, when Rasulullah was alive, he is never commanded us to qodho or Aisyah said, “So do we.” (HR. Bukhari).
It is explained that during haidh, women are not allowed do praying and she is not necessary to qodho her worship during the period of haidh. She can still worship to Allah by dhizkr because there are many virtues of dizkr.
“Hadiht Muadzah asked Aisyah AR,
” Why women are not qodho their worship as it is done as fasting?” Aisyah answered,” Are you from Haruriyah clan?” I said, “No I am not.” She replies,” We have haidh previously and we were not commandment to qodho our worship aside our fasting.” (HR. Muslim)
As in pillar of Ramadhan fasting, haidh and childbirth are the condition whereas it can revoke our fasting and change the obligation from mandatory become prohibit. It is not necessary to replace our worship while it is necessary to replace our fasting sometimes by pronouncing our intention in fasting during Ramadhan and after Ramadhan. It is not only in Ramadhan, but also for other Sunnah fasting when we are in haidh or childbirth period. Though they are types of Sunnah fasting, it is entirely prohibit for women to do the worship during haidh. She can replace it by Ramadhan fasting prayer inside of her heart so the worship still can be done.
3. Sexual Relations
QS Al Baqarah 222 mentioned that when women in haidh, she is prohibiting to have sexual relation with her spouse as it also stated on Shari’ a Islam.
“Those who are having sexual relation when she was haidh or her rectum, he shall kufr on what Muhammad SAW were revealed.” (HR. Tirmidzi and Ibnu Majah).
“Do activities (to women in haidh) aside of Jima.” (HR. Bukhori).

In fact, it can cause of diseases due to the condition of the ovum is different before haidh and after haidh. Here are some explanations:
- Imam Nawawi said, “All Muslim agreed that having sexual relation during haidh is forbid as Al Qur’an and Hadidh.”
- Ibnu Taimiyah rahimullah said, “Sexual relation during childbirth period is forbid as it as haidh and theologians discussion.”
- Al Muhamili in Al Majmu’ said that Imam Asy Syafi’I mentioned, “Those who are having sexual relation when she is haidh, he shall fall into big sins.”
Most of theologians are agreed about the basic shari’a Islam which is mentioned about the prohibition of having sexual relation whereas spouse is recommend to be patient on his carnal desire. If he cannot, he tends to zina while zina in Islam is considered as a big sin and hates most by Allah SWT.
Rasulullah told to Aisyah,
” Do everything as if as you are in Hajj except Tawaf at Ka’bah until you are in chaste.” (HR. Bukhari and Muslim).
Tawaf in Hajj was forbidden for women who are having haidh.
5. Go to the mosque
Aisyah RA once told that Rasulullah SAW said,
“I will not permit the mosque to those who are in junub and haidh.”
Some of theologians are having different opinions related to the issue. Some said it is forbidden while others said it is allowed as long as she is not praying and potentially will not contaminate the mosque with her filth. Therefore, as a remainder, women in haidh condition are not allowed to go inside of the mosque but she can stay at the terrace reconsider of her filth. 6. Reading Al Qur’an
Though there are many advantages of reading Al Qur’an as it mentioned on the function of Al Qur’an in human supported by all theologians, reading Al Qur’an in haidh condition is forbidden. QS. Waqi’ah:79,
” Do not touch it unless for those who are in saint.”
In its relation to read Al Qur’an, some theologians said that it is allowed to read Al Qur’an as long as she is not holding the holly Qur’an in the context of study or learning. Though there are contradictions about the issue, it is better for women to review some opinions from theologians which are believed that it wills goodness for herself. It is caused of there are many advantages of reading Al Qur’an as it is our fundamental guidance in life.
Those are activities which are prohibit in Islam during women in haidh. However, women are no need to anxious for doing praying and do other good deeds in haidh condition, because there are other activities she can do in worship like to read Asmaul Husna as it is many advantages of Asmaul Husna.
