The Ethics Towards Yourself in Islam

Humans are created with rational and mind so that they can manage their lives well. Those who are rational and understand their existence are certainly able to control all attitudes and deeds that want to be done. In Islam, someone must be able to apply the ethics towards himself. What is the meaning of ethics? Then how important is it for human life?

This article will explain about the ethics towards yourself in Islam that you need to know. Check out below!

Definition of Ethics in Islam

Ethics is a word that comes from Ancient Greek “ethikos” which means coming up from habit. In outline, ethics is a norm or rule in behaving in the environment that is in accordance with the society’s habit. Religion that is embraced by someone also influences his ethics. In Islam, someone who has a status of Muslim has certainly different ethics with those who are non-Muslims. Those who live in rural environment have certainly different ethics with those who live in urban area.

  • Always Repent

Humans are not free from sin. It is either intentionally or unintentionally. It is either realized or not realized. It is important for you to know what sins that are unintentional in Islam.

The best humans are those who repent when they realize that they have sinned. Even though it is a small sin. As it is stated in the following hadith.

From Agharr bin Yasar Al Muzani, he said, the Prophet Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam has said, “O humans! Repent to Allah and ask for forgiveness to Him, because indeed, I repent to Allah one hundred times in a day.” (Hadith Sahih Muslim, no. 2702 (42), Syarah Muslim, by Imam An Nawawi (XVII/24-25). Also narrated by Ahmad (IV/211), Anu Dawud (no. 1515), Al Baghawi (no. 1288) and Ath Thabrani and Al Mu’jamul Kabir (no. 883))

The repentance that is meant is taubatan nasuha which is repent to Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala in earnest. Without the intention to return to make the same mistakes or the wrong way.

  • Muraqabah

Muraqabah is a belief in yourself that every thing in this world is always under Allah’s supervision. So that someone will be more careful in behaving so that he is not easy to do vain deeds or repetitive sins in Islam.

The Prophet shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said,

“Be careful, thrifty, and look good is one of the 24 prophetic parts.” (Hadith Thabrani)

The Prophet shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said to Asyja’ bin Qais,

“Indeed, in yourself, there are 2 characters that are loved by Allah and His Prophet; which are politeness and caution.” (Hadith Tirmidzi)

  • Muhasabah

Muhasabah is to do an evaluation towards yourself for all deeds that are done. Daily muhasabah gives benefits to someone so that he knows all mistakes that he has done and the graces from Allah that he must be grateful for. So, on the next day, he will try to correct his mistakes and do even better.

Before sleeping, try to muhasabah heart at night!

Allah Ta’ala said,

“O believers! Fear Allah and let everyone pay attention to what he has done for tomorrow (the afterlife), and fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Omniscient of what you do.” (QS. Al-Hashr [59]: 18)

Those are some ethics towards yourself in Islam that you can know and practice in daily life. Hopefully it can give good benefits and improve self-motivation so that you are able to show the characteristics of believers in Islam.
