Here we go again in the azislam.com, Islamic information center site. If azislam.com has discussed some articles like importance of veil in Islam, prayers at night of Lailatul Qadar, and importance of good relations in Islam, in this occasion, azislam.com will talk about some certain effects of ignorant behavior according to Islam. But before we start it, don’t forget to read another azislam.com articles like importance of saying “Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilaihi Rajiun” & dua in the morning in Islam.

Ignorance is a state where person became unaware and lack of knowledge mostly about surrounding and information or facts. Islam prohibited their people to become ignorance but in certain things such as invitation of doing a bad act or violation Islam recommend muslims to be ignorance. But generally the word ignorance refer to a character who doesn’t want to accept news, information, fact, and knowledge from the outside. Lack of eagerness to learn, finding information or knowledge, feel empathy, helping other, or just listen to them will lead us into terrible ignorance people.

Ziyad ibn Labeed reported : The Prophet SAW, said :

“There will be a time when knowledge disappears.’ I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, how can knowledge disappear when we read Al-Qur’an and we will teach it to our children until the Day of Resurrection? ‘The Prophet said, ‘May your mother be bereft of you, Ziyad! I thought you were the wisest man in Medina. Do not these Jews and Christians read the Torah and the Gospel but they do not act upon what is in them?” (Narrated by Ibn Majah validated by Ibn Kathir)

From the above hadith we knew the effect ignorance in Islam is vital. Since Allah SWT and His Prophet has provided guidance and knowledge to all mankind but ignorance lead them into the day of ignorance.

The effects of ignorance in Islam can be explained as the following:

1. Bring misguidance

Ignorant people will definitly woe someday, since ignorance may bring muslims into misguidance. Rasulullah SAW, said in the following hadith:

“Verily, Allah does not withhold knowledge by snatching it away from his servants, but rather he withholds knowledge by withholding scholars, until no scholar remains and people follow ignorant leaders. They are asked and they issue judgments without knowledge. Thus, they are astray and lead others.” (Narrated by Bukhari)

From the hadith we could related that being an ignorance may cause misleading, moreover if we ignore knowledge and making decision on something than it may cause a serious trouble someday.

2. Muslims will not have empathy

When we see someone in need for example people who affected by disaster, it is natural for us to pray for them or help them by providing food, clothes, give them a place to stay. But an ignorance people, they feel no empathy, the does not care or even had an initiative to help them. Since an ignorance people just think about their own-self first, and the did not exposed by the impact than they will not even care about it.

From Sa’ib Ibn Abdullah reported, Rasulullah SAW said to him :

“O Sa’ib, look at the character of your deeds in the time of ignorance and continue them in Islam : honor the guest, be generous to the orphan, and be good to your neighbor.” (Narrated by Ahmad)

3. Lead us into astray

We knew that before Islam come to this world there were a time where people live in ignorance, a time when most people live in astray. Crime and violation happened across the society, and there is no exact law and guidance among mankind. Thus, clear enough for us as muslims that live in ignorance will bring us into that time. Of course, we do not want to step back in life, right?

4. Knowledge blindness

Islam always encourage muslims to seek for knowledge, gain it from everywhere. That knowledge will never be enough to studied. Knowledge help us to live and survive, in order to gain knowledge we should not be an ignorance person. We must get rid of that character from our mindset.

Ar Razi reported, Ali Ibn Abi Talib said :

“There is no good in silence when it comes to knowledge, just as there is no good in speaking when it comes to ignorance.”

5. Ignore by others

We live in social environment, thus as social being we should mingle and care toward society and surrounding community. It is a natural thing and a necessity for us both as muslim and social being to care people who needs our help. When our neighbor, community, or relative needs our help even it just a little one, than we should help them. It is prohibited in Islam to ignore people in need, especially if we have an ability to help them.

“Take what is given freely, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the ignorant.” (QS. Al-A’raf – 199)

6. Missing opportunity to perform good deed

There are so many ways to perform a good deed, and Allah loves His people who always perform good in everyday life. For example, when we meet a friend or bump into someone and we greet them friendly instead of ignore them than it will be counted as a good deed.

7. Left by friends and relatives

When we ignore other especially friend and relative then later on they will ignore you back. It just unwritten law in society, that even mankind is an individual creature but they need others to survive and if you do not mingle into society that they will leave you. They will think that you do not need them, or you do not want to be part of them. As a good muslims, wherever we are we should try to mingle and adjust to them.

8. There will be no reward from Allah SWT

Allah will never grants His people with reward and bounty if they became ignorance against the suffering of others.

“And O my people, I ask not of you for it any wealth. My reward is not but from Allah. And I am not one to drive away those who have believed. Indeed, they will meet their Lord, but I see that you are a people behaving ignorantly.” (QS. Hud – 29)

People who choose to live ignorantly will never find the path of Allah, they will only live in their own mind, does not care about Allah, other person, and surrounding also environment which mean they will lost an opportunity to get a great reward from Allah both in this world or Hereafter.

9. Islam will not develop

If all muslims or half of muslims became ignorant toward fellow muslims or toward other person, than Islam will going nowhere. Islam will never spread in the universe and will never develop. Islam is a religion which is a blessing for all nature, every human beings in this world have the same right to learn about Islam. If us as muslims became ignorance in this issue than there is no chance for them to learn about Islam. And if all the scholars became ignorance either than there is no hope for Islam to grow up.

10. Muslims will be left behind

If muslims became an ignorance person than it just a matter of time for them to be left behind from other people. This world will always move forward, technology, science, social relation, education, they always develop over time. If we sat still and do not participate in improving ourselves according with the times than we will not be able to adjust into a modern era.

11. Allah will not grant ignorance people with blessing and gift

“And among people and moving creatures and grazing livestock are various colors similarly. Only those fear Allah, from among His servants, who have knowledge. Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Forgiving.” (QS. Fatir – 28)

It is clear that muslims who does not care about surrounding or even do not want to gain any knowledge will not be granted by blessing and gift from Allah SWT. Sustenance and pleasure in this world can be obtained by muslims if they they work hard, encourage themselves to obtain information and knowledge and create a good relationship both to fellow humans and environment.
