13 Ways on How to Help a Depressed Person in Islam
Depression is a disorder that can happen to anyone with many causes. This disorder can attack anyone, men or women, poor or rich and many more.
Depression will affects feeling, mindset, mood until the way to face daily activities. When someone gets depression, then he will get prolonged sad, hopeless, not have motivations, lose the interest of his favorite things and try to blame his self.
A depressed person is often unaware or he does not know that he gets depression. He is shy and he considers that depression can be solved by a willpower without other’s help. Whereas, depression rarely heals without treatments.
There is no exact causes from depression. Commonly, it is a result of combination from complex factors, such as :

- Biological factor
- Bad dietary habit
- Have a chronic illness
- Have a psychic trauma
- Drug abuse

- Talk to him
Talk to your friend or family who get depression about what you see. You should listen and try to understand his feelings and his thoughts. Do not criticize or judge him. But, you should explains him that depression is a disease that need therapy. It is not disabled or weakness. It will be better with therapy.
- Invite to remember Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala
Remembering Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala or it is called as Zikrullah can be a very powerful medicine to get rid depression. When a depressed person remembers Allah Ta’ala, he will remember if everything will be back to Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala.
Even, according to Huzaifah, when the Prophet Muhammad Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam was sad and getting problems, he did prayer and multiplied dhikr. - Invite to do prayer
As Moslems, Islam commands someone to do five daily prayer. Besides obligation prayers, there are also sunnah prayers in Islam.
Prayer has many benefits for us. One of them is it can make heart become calmer and close us to Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala. So that, we can keep emotional stability well. Even, prayer can be a medicine for many diseases, too.
“O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.” (Q.S. Al-Baqarah : 153)
- Be patient
“So patience is most fitting. And Allah is the one sought for help.” (Q.S. Yusuf : 18)
A depressed person must be patience. He should believe that he is not alone, Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala will always be with him and He will help him through his problems in this world. The Prophet Ya’kub a.s. said “Patience is more beautiful”. So when he faces a heavy problem, we should advice him to be patient.

- Arrange a sleeping schedule
In fact, depression will make someone difficult to sleep. He cannot sleep well. For that, no harm if you arrange a sleeping schedule for him. So, the symptom of depression will decrease.
- Do simple exercises
A depressed person can be healed by doing simple exercises. This thing will be very help him to decrease the symptom of depression.

In fact, meditation can help you to cure a depressed person. A person who has bad feeling often has unwanted thought.
You can invite him to do meditation, at least thirty minutes in a day. Find a quite place and start to control breathing. Do not let him to think anything that relate with his problem.

Every human needs entertainments and you can be an entertainer for others. If you have a friend or family who get depression, you can comfort him. For example, you can make a joke for him, so he will smile and laugh. This way can decrease his depression.
- Encourage him
Commonly, a depressed person feels that he is not worthless. By your support, you can encourage him. If you give a gift or a compliment upon his positive think, his depression will decrease. But, you must be patient and consistent because help a depressed person is not easy. You should always there in his side, such as you always accompany him to do therapy.
- Create an environment that support his curative
A depressed person needs an environment that support his curative. You can help him to create it, for example a quiet environment where it does not make him stress.
Or you can advise him to be together. Because according to Islam, if he keeps relation with family in the middle of his busy, it can bring him to the happiness. Although, he is just having some fun and chatting with his family, these things can avoid him from depression.
A depressed person must do tawakkal to cure his depression. Tawakkal is a feeling to always think and do positive things to Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala. By this behavior, he must accept all of tests and disasters that come to him.
- Get positive energy out
You should help a depressed person to think positive and lose his negative feelings, such as invite him to do prayers, good deeds and close to Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala. So that, his depression will decrease.
