Importance of Shyness in Islam (Haya) – Modesty

 Shy is a human characteristic that can assist himself from bad deeds and disgraceful. It can also helps human to avoid all forbidden deeds so he can maintain his pride and dignity.  Shy already exists since we were born or it can also as a habit.

Shy in Islam is needed to manage the human morals because it is part of human faith. In fact, one of the hadidh is mentioned that shy is a substation of human faith to Allah SWT. Read more about How to Improve Faith in Islam

The reason of the statement is because when someone is godly to Allah SWT he should feel ashamed and guilty about him. Example when someone is trying to steal, he feels shame to Allah SWT because Allah is All Seeing and Allah is All Omniscient. Thus at the end, he is recall his intention because his godly to Allah SWT. It is from Abu Hurairah which is mentioned that Rasulullah SAW said,

“Our Faith is the foundation, and it has seventy or more substations whereas shy is included inside of it.” (HR. Muslim).

In fact, shy is become one of the characteristics of good women in Islam. Those who have the characteristic of shy are considered as good women in Islam.

Here, in a content of how to select women in Islam, a male is also being taught and recommended to seek a woman who’s having the shy characteristic. Shy here means that she is able to maintain her genitals and afraid to doing immorality in spite of introvert or afraid to others.

Rasulullah SAW as of His Messenger once being told that he was included as a shy person rather than the ordinary women.  Abu Sa’id said,

“Our Prophet of Muhammad Shallallahu’alaihi wa sallam can be categorized as a shy person than the ordinary women. When he dislikes (something), we can notice from his face.” (HR. Bukhari)

Shy can also make something become beautiful different from vicious that can only leads to something bad or horrible.

Annas Ibnu Malik once said that Rasulullah SAW was mentioned,

“The characteristic of Shy can make something become beautiful different from vicious that leads to something bad or horrible.” (HR. Bukhari).

The virtues of Shy in Islam

It is narrated from Abu Mas’ud that mentioned of Uqbah statement about Rasulullah SAW said,

Indeed, among the sentences of the prophet being issued to all human is if you are not shy, do as you like.” (HR. Bukhari)

Here are some virtues of shy in Islam:

  1. Shy is part of substation of human faith

It is from Abu Hurairah mentioned that Rasulullah SAW said,

“Faith is the foundation, it has seventy or more whereas shy included inside of it.” (HR. Muslim).

The hadidh is explained about shy as a part of the faith substations. It is stated that those who do not have the feeling of shame to Allah SWT .

Then he will be considered as ungodly to Allah SWT because those who do not have a shy characteristic will tend to do the bad deeds and immoral which are included as big sin.

2. Shy is considered can bring goodness

Someone will not fall to badness by having the feeling of shame. In fact, it can give goodness to someone and avoid of himself to the vile attitudes. Rasulullah SAW said,

“Shy will not lead you to the bad but for the good one only.”

3. Shy as the moral of the angels

Rasulullah SAW said,

“Am I not proper to feel shy to someone while the angels are have the feeling of shy to him.”

It means that the angels are feeling shame to all His ummat who are being faithfully to Allah SWT.

4. Shy is one of moral character in Islam

Rasulullah SAW said,

“Indeed, each religion has its own moral characteristic whereas shy is part of it.”

5. Shy as one of habituated of Allah SWT

When a Muslim is praying kneel down and let his hands open widely as if he is begging to Allah SWT and then he turned down in an empty hands, Allah SWT feels shame of Himself. 6. Shy can leads someone into heaven

Rasulullah SAW said,

” Shy is part of the faith substations which belongs to the heaven and all the bad sentences are part of the bad attitudes whereas it belongs to hell.” (HR. Ahmad and Tirmidzi).

7. Shy is always stand together with faith

Rasulullah SAW said,

“Shy and faith are stand together. If one of it is being vanished, the other will be vanished too.” (HR. Al-Hakim and At-Thabrani).

It means that when someone does not have the characteristic of shy, he will lost his faith and it is also be affected in vice verse.

8. Shy as in heritage of our previous prophet

Abu Mas’ud was mentioned that Uqbah once told him that Rasulullah SAW said,”

Indeed, among the sentences of the prophet being issued to all human is if you are not shy, do as you like.” (HR. Bukhari).

9. Shy as one of the personality of Rasulullah SAW

10. Shy can avoid human from sin

Shy as one of human personalities can help human itself out from all the actions which caused of sin. By having this nature, it means he still has a faith inside of his heart.

In conclusion, shy in Islam is considered as a good attitude. As good Muslim, we are eager to maintain shy as our character inside of us.

The reason is because nowadays, there are many people who are losing their shyness (one of the attributes of end of time in Islam). it is also recommended to all Muslim to always behave in good ways and good morality as Allah SWT was mentioned it in the source of Shari’ a Islam in consistence with the basic law of Islam.
