The role of a husband in Islam commonly relates to the task which brings responsibility toward the spouse in marriage life. For so many years, Muslim believe that a husband is responsible for so many things.
In modern marriage life, some roles are commonly parted by both husband and wife with the agreed portion settled by both of them. That makes an innovation but doesn’t leave the main role of a husband in Islam as the chief of the family.
Speaking of it, here we have some of the important roles of a husband in Islam based on the Quran. Let’s see some of them below!
Increasing faith in Allah is one of the roles of a husband in Islam as one of the signs of good husband in Islam. As the man of the family, the husband is responsible for what kind of faith his spouse put on. As a Muslim, it is obvious to bring put faith and trust in Allah only among the marriage family.
Increasing faith in Allah will bring a safer life, whether for now or in the hereafter. Muslims know better obeying the Islamic rule by their faith in Allah will bring so much luck and blessed life.
Such as mentioned in the Quran surah Al Anfal verse 2 below which can be a Dua for newlyweds in Islam so that they can increase their faith to get a solemn life.
اِنَّمَا الْمُؤْمِنُوْنَ الَّذِيْنَ اِذَا ذُكِرَ اللّٰهُ وَجِلَتْ قُلُوْبُهُمْ وَاِذَا تُلِيَتْ عَلَيْهِمْ اٰيٰتُهٗ زَادَتْهُمْ اِيْمَانًا وَّعَلٰى رَبِّهِمْ يَتَوَكَّلُوْنَۙ ٢
“Verily, the believers are those whose hearts tremble when called upon by the name of Allah, and when His verses are recited to them, their faith increases, and they put their trust in their Lord alone,” (QS 8:2)
One of the roles of a husband in Islam as mentioned in so many books bring the role of the guardian of the family. As the guardian, the husband protects the spouse including the family under the Islamic role to seek some of Allah’s blessing.
As the guardian of the family, the role of a husband in Islam is perceived as a husband who builds happiness for the spouse. That will make the spouse feels safe in their marriage life with the husband. Moreover, if they make some Dua’s to strengthen marriage regularly.
It is mentioned in the Quran surah An Nisa verse 34 below.
اَلرِّجَالُ قَوَّامُوْنَ عَلَى النِّسَاۤءِ بِمَا فَضَّلَ اللّٰهُ بَعْضَهُمْ عَلٰى بَعْضٍ وَّبِمَآ اَنْفَقُوْا مِنْ اَمْوَالِهِمْ ۗ فَالصّٰلِحٰتُ قٰنِتٰتٌ حٰفِظٰتٌ لِّلْغَيْبِ بِمَا حَفِظَ اللّٰهُ ۗ
“Men (husbands) are responsible for women (wives) because Allah has favored some of them (men) over others (women) and because they (men) have spent part of their wealth. Righteous women are those who obey (to Allah) and take care of themselves when (her husband) is not around because Allah has taken care of (them).” (QS 4:34)
Loving and caring are two typical manners of a husband that represent the role of a husband in Islam. As the man of the family, a husband has to have a loving and caring sense to behave towards his spouse. It can be a small deed with a big reward in Islam that you can practice daily.
This behavior commonly will get in line with the effort of the spouse as she brings some tips for being a good wife in Islam. It can be great progress to build a happy family under Islamic law.
A husband should give a loving and caring manner so that it would capable to bring so much happiness to his marriage life. Such as mentioned in the Quran surah Ali Imran verse 159 below.
فَبِمَا رَحْمَةٍ مِّنَ اللّٰهِ لِنْتَ لَهُمْ ۚ وَلَوْ كُنْتَ فَظًّا غَلِيْظَ الْقَلْبِ لَانْفَضُّوْا مِنْ حَوْلِكَ ۖ فَاعْفُ عَنْهُمْ وَاسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ وَشَاوِرْهُمْ فِى الْاَمْرِۚ فَاِذَا
“So, by the grace of Allah, you (Prophet Muhammad) were gentle with them. If you were harsh and harsh-hearted, surely they would stay away from you. Therefore, forgive them, ask forgiveness for them, and consult with them in all (important) matters.“ (QS 3:159)
Practicing some Islamic rules in the family is one of the roles of a husband in Islam. It would bring the family to practice some good deeds around them. As a husband, he should bring a good example of it so that the family will follow him naturally.
Moreover, once the family does a good deed it may capable to protect them from the hell fire in the hereafter. This can be one of the duties of a husband, which should apply to the family.
Such as mentioned in the Quran surah At-Tahriim verse 6 below.
يٰٓاَيُّهَا الَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْا قُوْٓا اَنْفُسَكُمْ وَاَهْلِيْكُمْ نَارًا وَّقُوْدُهَا النَّاسُ وَالْحِجَارَةُ عَلَيْهَا مَلٰۤىِٕكَةٌ غِلَاظٌ شِدَادٌ لَّا يَعْصُوْنَ اللّٰهَ مَآ اَمَرَهُمْ وَيَفْعَلُوْنَ مَا يُؤْمَرُوْنَ ٦
“O, you who believe, protect yourselves and your families from a hellfire whose fuel is people and stones. Its guardians are harsh and stern angels. They are not disobedient to Allah for what He has ordered them to do and always do what is commanded.” (QS 66:6)
Providing financial stability is one of the roles of a husband in Islam that bring an important role to marriage life. Even if Islam doesn’t have a strict rule about this matter, considering the social needs having financial stability for marriage life is important.
Moreover, Allah mentions it as a husband’s duty to provide a financial expense for his spouse in the Quran surah An Nisa verse 34 below.
