Food is one our basic needs and everyone must need food. In Islam, everything is arranged by Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala, include food. Allah SWT creates the earth and its content to human’s survival. He allows everything to be eaten, but there are some foods that haram for human, especially Moslems.
Allah Ta’ala said :
وَكُلُوا مِمَّا رَزَقَكُمُ اللَّهُ حَلَالًا طَيِّبًا وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ الَّذِي أَنْتُمْ بِهِ مُؤْمِنُونَ
“And eat of what Allah has provided for you [which is] lawful and good. And fear Allah, in whom you are believers.” (Q.S. Al-Maidah : 88)
He also said :
“O mankind, eat from whatever is on earth [that is] lawful and good and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy. He only orders you to evil and immorality and to say about Allah what you do not know.” (Q.S. Al-Baqarah : 168 – 169)

Here are some things that you can’t eat in Islam or the law is haram for Moslems.
- Carcass (Al-Maitah)
Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam has said :
مَا قُطِعَ مِنْ الْبَهِيمَةِ وَهِيَ حَيَّةٌ فَهِيَ مَيْتَةٌ
“What is cut from a life animal, than it is a carcass.” (Narrated by Abu Daud, At Tirmidzi and Ibn Majah)
Al-Qur’an has explained that if the death of animal is unnatural or the animal died without the slaughtering process in Islam (without the name of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala), it is haram. But Islam gave two exceptions, they are fish and grasshopper. The carcasses of them is halal. As the word of Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam :
أُحِلَّتْ لَنَا مَيْتَتَانِ وَدَمَانِ فَأَمَّا الْمَيْتَتَانِ فَالْحُوتُ وَالْجَرَادُ وَأَمَّا الدَّمَانِ فَالْكَبِدُ وَالطِّحَالُ
“We are allowed two carcasses and blood. They are fish and grasshopper. While the two blood are heart and spleen.” (Narrated by Ibn Majah)
The carcass is said haram if it is eaten, it can give bad effect for human body. Because there is still the dangerous dregs of blood for us.
- Blood flowing
In Al-Qur’an surah Al-An’am verse 145, besides carcass and pork, blood flowing is also forbidden (haram) to be eaten. Why? Because consuming blood as food or drink is a habit of ignorance in the past. They made the blood of animals to food or drink.
Because of that, Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala banned the blood of ignorance. But there are some exceptions, where the blood is allowed to be consumed. [AdSense-B]
- As the hadith of Rasulullah saw above, there are two halal blood, heart and spleen.
- In Al-Qur’an surah Al-An’am has mentioned that blood flowing is haram, but the blood that still stick on meat or animal bones is not haram.
Syaikul Islam Ibn Taimiyah has said that
“The right opinion that the haram blood (by Allah) is blood flowing. As for the blood that stick on meat, then there is no ulama who ban it.” ( Al-Mulakhas Al-Fiqhi)
Blood is haram because it contains high uric acid, so if it is consumed, it will be dangerous for our healthiness.
- Pig
The next thing you can’t eat in Islam is every food that made from pig. So, it is not only pork that haram, but all parts of pig is haram to be consumed.
Why? Because a pig eats everything, both dirt, garbage, soil and other in front of it. If it has been full, it will vomit the food and eat again.
Pigs have also a deviant sexual behavior, where they do sex with the same sex. Besides that, the body of pig is a host of parasites such as tapeworms an it contains many dangerous diseases such as HIV, swine flu, etc.

“And do not eat of that upon which the name of Allah has not been mentioned, for indeed, it is grave disobedience. And indeed do the devils inspire their allies [among men] to dispute with you. And if you were to obey them, indeed, you would be associators [of others with Him].” (Q.S. Al-An’am : 121)
- A dead animal that was killed by wild animals
Based on the agreement of Ulama that a dead animal that was killed by wild animals such as lion, crocodile, dog, fox and others, then the law is haram to be eaten. But if that animal is still alive and we slaughter it by the name of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala, then the law will be halal to be eaten.

“Rasulullah saw has banned to ate every sabre-toothed animals from the kind of wild animals and every kinds of birds that have sharp nails (to grab hold).” (Narrated by Muslim)
That hadith has mentioned that the law of eating sabre-toothed animals from the kind of wild animals such as bear, fog, fox, and others is haram.

“Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam forbid in the Khaibar war from (eat) meat of khimar and allowed horsemeat.” (Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim)
As for an oppinion stated that the meat of docile donkeys are haram to be eaten. It is the oppinion of Jumhur Ulama from the companions and tabi’in. While the wild ass is allowed to be eaten.
- Al-Jalalah
Al-Jalalah is all animals that have two or four legs. They also eat dirt, both the dirt of human or another animals. This is a majority opinion of Syafi’iyyah and Hanabillah.
Then it gets a confirmation from Ibn Daqiq Al-‘Ied from Fuqaha’ and it is validated by Abu Ishaq Al-Marwazi, Al-Qoffal, Al-Juwaini, Al-Baghawi and Al-Ghozali. This opinion was strengthened by the word of Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam below :
نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليهوسلم- عَنْ أَكْلِ الْجَلاَّلَةِ وَأَلْبَانِهَا
“Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam forbid from eat jallalah and its milk.” (Narrated by Abu Daud, Tirmidzi and Ibn Majah)
- Ad-Dhab
Ad-Dhab is an animal llike lizard, the law is haram to eat its meat for those who are disgusting to eat it. But the law is allowed for those who are not disgusting to eat it. As the word of Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam :
“Dhab, I do not eat it and I do not forbid it, too.” (Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim) [AdSense-C]

- Animals that are forbidden to be killed
Rasulullah saw has said :
“From Ibn Abbas said : Rasulullah forbid to killed four animals : ant, bee, hud-hud and surad.” (Narrated by Ahmad, Abu Daud, Ibn Majah and Ibn Hibban)
Imam Syafi’i and companions has said that “Every animals that are forbidden to be killed must not be eaten, because if they may be eaten, of course it will not be forbidden to be killed.”
Thus the article about things you can’t eat in Islam. Hopefully, we can be far away from all of things that are forbidden by Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala. Amen.
