12 Surprising Benefits of Lowering Your Gaze in Islam

Lowering the gaze is a deed that Allah SWT has prohibited and it has written inside the Quran since a long time ago. Everyone who lower their gaze and be able to protect their private part will make a greater purification of the heart and soul as the outcome.

“Say to the believing men that they should lower their gaze and guard their private parts; that will make for greater purity for them. Indeed Allaah is well acquainted with all that they do.” (24:30)

Indeed, Allah SWT never make a prohibition unless it is for our own good as Muslims and in the end we are to be benefited. Here are some the benefits of lowering your gaze in Islam:

1. Experiencing the Sweetness of Faith

No one will ever have a sweet experience of the faith unless he lower his gaze from anything that do him no good. One will Allah’s favor through the object in which he has lowered his gaze, for the sake of Allah SWT. The Prophet (peace be upon him said”,

” … whosoever leaves something for the sake of Allah then Allah, the Mighty and Magnificent, will replace it with something better than it.” (Ahmad)

2. Find Guidance for the Soul

It’s a human natural instinct to look at beautiful things. The eyes and the heart are he key to hold the desire from doing so, and once we succeed, we may find the ultimate guidance for the soul.

“Thus (did We order) so that We might turn away from him all evil and indecent actions for he was one of Our sincere servants.” (12:24)

3. Illuminating the Heart

A Muslim’s heart should only be relinquish with the love for Allah SWT and make Him the only object we devote our heart to. The heart that does not Allah will not by shined by His light.

“Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth.” (24:35)

4. Strengthening the Heart

“So do not lose heart nor fall into despair; for you must gain mastery if you are true in faith.” (3:139)

Lowering the gaze and holding up the desire from unnecessary things are hard to do. It requires a strong heart that full of love and dedication only to Allah SWT.

“If any do seek for nobilty and power then to Allah belongs all nobility and power.” (35:10)

5. Obeying Allah’s Command

One of the best benefits of lowering your gaze in Islam is being obedient to Allah’s command. Nothing better we can do as a slave for Allah unless looking for His blessing and guidance. On the Day of Judgment, this obedience will do many good for us.

6. Preventing the Evil Whisper of Satan

Ever since Adam (AS) was created, Satan has sworn to lure human being into evil deeds. We have to prevent Satan from getting into ourselves and drive to to do anything wrong that may cause the rage of Allah SWT.

7. Create a Devoting Heart for Allah SWT

Letting our gaze to wander around will slowly distract our heart from Allah SWT and makes it far away over time. It would cause something harmful, as we are not focus on devoting our heart for Allah SWT.

8. Create a Guiding Light for the Heart

We will got nothing but darkness if we gaze into things that wake up our desire and causing sins. Make sure that Allah SWT always guide our heart into goodness by lowering our heart.

“Tell the believing men to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things), and protect their private parts…”

9. Helps Defining Truth and Lie

By lowering our gaze, it helps us to define what’s good and bad, which is lie and truth. Indeed, Allah always compensate with something better if we obedient to Him. Being able to tell apart the good and bad helps us to lead a good life.

“Verily, by your life (O Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), in their wild intoxication, they were wandering blindly” (15:32)

10. Create a Steadfast Heart

A heart that is steadfast is a heart that always belong to Allah SWT. As anyone who goes against his desire is very far from the Satan’s evil whisper. Since gazing into something forbidden cause us to commit sins that will never leave us behind.

“But honour, power and glory belong to Allaah, and to His Messenger (Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), and to the believers” (63:8)

11. Blocking the Satan’s Way to the Heart

Satan easily enters a weak heart that always goes with anything he desire, even when he knows that it does no good for him. Once Satan enters the heart, it hardly leaves and it will be harder for us to find the way back to Allah SWT once again.

12. Prevent Distractions from Allah SWT

We can be more focused and devoting our heart and soul only to worship Allah SWT. We won’t be easily distract by something He clearly prohibited.

“and let not your eyes overlook them, desiring the pomp and glitter of the life of the world; and obey not him whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance, and who follows his own lusts, and whose affair (deeds) has been lost” (18:28)

Seeing the many benefits of lowering your gaze in Islam, we must have been regretting how we let our gaze wander all these time. No good thing comes easy so we have to give our best to become a good Muslim.
