Bismillaahirrahmaanirrahiim.
The more advanced an era will make the human mind more advanced. However, the progress of their minds and technology has not been in line with the progress of religion. Religion is increasingly seen as a thing that is not important anymore and simply abandoned.
The simplest example of leaving religion behaviour at this time is being reluctant to read Al-Qur’an. Gossip news, funny videos, and viral things are more interesting than the holy verses of Al-Qur’an for them. Though, Muslim should know the danger of gossip in Islam. Thus, Muslims prefer to spend more time in front of social media applications than reciting Al-Qur’an.
One more, the number of people who are skeptical of the Al-Qur’an memorizers are increased. They assume that memorization is merely memorizing other languages and is against the spirit of nationalism. Though, memorizing is not just memorizing, but also understanding.
Speaking of memorizing Qur’an, as a Muslim we should know how to memorize Qur’an in an effective way. Muslims nowadays prefer to memorize song lyrics with the theme of liberalism compared to memorizing holy verses of Al-Qur’an that are full of wisdom.
As we already know that reading the Qur’an has many benefit, especially if we memorize it. Then, what are the benefits of memorizing Al-Qur’an should be known by Muslim? This article will give a little review for you.
It is not strange to us that reading Al-Qur’an is a major worship in Islam. We have learned it a lot since we were kids. However, like what comes out of our mouths everyday, humans make mistake as well.
Humans need to always be reminded to always be istiqamah (steadfastness) in carrying out worship. The condition of our faith is always up and down, so we should to continue learning and reminding one another. With learning and reminding one another, we could make our faith in Islam stronger.
Allah asserts in His words in QS Fathir verses 29-30 that reading Al-Qur’an is a trade that will not lose between humans and its creator, Allah SWT.
{الذين يتلون كتاب الله وأقاموا الصلاة وأنفقوا مما رزقناهم سرا وعلانية يرجون تجارة لن تبور (29) ليوفيهم أجورهم ويزيدهم من فضله إنه غفور شكور (30)}
“Indeed, those who recite the Book of Allah and establish prayer and spend [in His cause] out of what We have provided them, secretly and publicly, [can] expect a profit that will never perish, that He may give them in full their rewards and increase for them of His bounty. Indeed, He is Forgiving and Appreciative. ” (Surah Fathir verses 29-30).
There are several interpretations of this verse:
Ibn Kathir rahimahullah said, “Qatadah (died: 118 AH) rahimahullah said, ‘Mutharrif bin Abdullah (Tabi’in, died 95H) when reading this verse he said: ‘This is a verse of people who like to read the Qur’an”
Imam Asy Syaukani rahimahullah stated, “The intention is to keep reading it and it becomes a habit”
Allah says in the surah above that His servant who reads the Qur’an has made a non-loss trade. What are those?
Abdullah bin Mas’ud RA said: “Rasulullah (PBUH): “Who reads one letter from the Qur’an for him one goodness with the reading, one goodness is multiplied into 10 goodness for example and I am not saying that الم is one letter, but ‘alif’ is one letter, ‘laam’ is one letter and ‘miim’ is one letter. ” (Narrated by Tirmidhi and reconciled in Sahih Al Jami, no. 6469)
From the hadith above, we know that no matter how bad we read the Qur’an, Allah will always give us rewards. This shows that Allah does not only judge the quality of the worship of the servant from the results, but from the process they go through.
A strong will to read Qur’an even though stammering will get more reward compared to people who are already can read Qur’an but are lazy to rad it.
So, it is not a reason for us to be reluctant to read Qur’an just because we are not fluent for this and afraid of not getting the reward. So, these are benefits of read Al-Qur’an everyday for life:
Allah asserts in His Qur’an surah Huud verse 114 which reads,
{إِنَّ الْحَسَنَاتِ يُذْهِبْنَ السَّيِّئَاتِ} [هود: 114]
“… For those things, that are good remove those that are evil: Be that word of remembrance to those who remember (their Lord) ”(surah Huud verse 114)
From this verse, Allah says clearly that all good deeds that we do will abort our sins.
Likewise, when we try our hardest to carry out Allah’s command, which is to read the Qur’an, the more sins will be forgiven. Not only reading, but also the commitment in implementing the values contained in it.
Rasulullah shalallahu’alaihi wassalam said, “Abdullah bin Abbas radhiyallahu‘ anhu said: “Allah has guaranteed that those who follow the Qur’an, will not go astray in the world and will not lose in the hereafter”, then he read the verse:
{فَمَنَ اتَّبَعَ هُدَايَ فَلاَ يَضِلُّ وَلاَ يَشْقَى}
“whosoever follows My Guidance, will not lose his way, nor fall into misery.” (Surah Thaha: 123) (Atsar Sahih is narrated in the book of Mushannaf Ibn Abi Shafi’ah).
From hadith above, we can know that Muslims who always read the Qur’an and understand it will get salvation in this world and the hereafter. Why is that? Because the Qur’an contains all the teachings in life.
Morals, aqeedah, history of the Prophets, fiqh, and many more. In fact, various sciences are also in Al-Qur’an. Those are the reasons why Al-Qur’an always has all life answer. Thus, for Muslims whoever wants to read the Qur’an and understand it will get benefits and lessons that guide their lives in reaching Allah’s heaven.
The problem of Muslims not only in those who do not want to read the Qur’an, but also in those who consider that memorizing Al-Qur’an is not important. In fact, there are various benefits that we can get by being a Qur’an memorizer. What are those? Here are the benefits.
1. Qur’an memorizer is the best form of human
Rasulullah (PBUH) said:
“خَيْرُكُمْ مَنْ تَعَلَّمَ الْقُرْآنَ وَعَلَّمَهُ”
“The best of you are those who study the Qur’an and teach it” (Narrated by Bukhari)
The hadith is actually not just ordering Muslims to memorize Qur’an, but also to explore and study it as well as possible. In addition, Muslims are asked to teach their understanding to other Muslims.
With this process of worship, it is appropriate that people who memorize, understand, practice, and teach the holy verses of the Qur’an to other Muslims are the best of God’s servants.
2. Allah raises degrees of Shahibul Qur’an
Rasulullah shalallaahu’alaihiwassalam said:
“إِنَّ الله يَرْفَع بِهَذا الكِتَاب أَقْوَاماً وَيَضَع بِهِ آخَرِيْن”
“Indeed, Allah raised some people with this Qur’an and humiliated others with it” (Hadith narrated by Muslim)
Hadith above conveys again that Allah will raise the degree of His servants who memorize and understand Qur’an. Because, by memorizing and understanding Qur’an, a Muslim is able to know the principle of Islamic teachings.
This principle of Islamic teachings that will lead them on the path of Allah to carry out His commands and stay away from His prohibitions.
This principle that will lead them to the path of the Prophets who try their best to realize the order of the Thayyibah society.
3. Qur’anic memorizers are preferred to be the Imam of prayer
Rasulullah sallallaahu’alaihiwasallam said:
يَؤُمُّ القَوْم أَقْرَؤُهُمْ لِكِتَابِ اللهِ
“The one who leads a people should be the most aqra’ to the Qur’an.” (Narrated by Abu Daud)
Since childhood, some of us might have dreams of becoming an Imam of prayer, hence we should know the manners of becoming the imam of prayer and its verses.
When we see our fathers, uncles, or neighbors who may become the imam of prayer, we feel that they are cool people who are able to lead prayers.
This can be a dream come true if we are able to memorize the Qur’an. In fact, based on the above hadith, people who memorize the Qur’an will always be prioritized to become an Imam of prayer.
We can imagine, how much reward we will get by becoming an Imam of prayer who memorized the Qur’an. Not only does it get merit, but it is also able to preach to others by giving examples of the behavior of memorizing the Qur’an.
4. Imam Shafi’i’s statement
Imam Shafi’i once said,
“Whoever learns the Qur’an becomes noble, whoever learns fiqh, then his honor becomes noble, whoever writes the Hadith then the hujjah becomes strong, whoever learns the language becomes soft in nature, whoever learns jurisprudence, then his honor becomes noble, whoever writes the Hadith then the hujjah becomes strong, whoever learns the language becomes soft in character, whoever learns jurisprudence counting then his opinion becomes strong, whoever doesn’t take care of himself then his knowledge cannot benefit him. “
The message from one of the great Islamic figures above meant that those who truly memorized and understood the Qur’an would have a noble position. This is because everything about the lessons of life is in the Holy Qur’an.
Social science, astronomy, fiqh, technology, and many more are actually listed in the Qur’an. Only people who really want to memorize and understand the Qur’an will get the wisdom.
Allah and Rasulullah clearly placed the readers and memorizers of the Qur’an in the highest position. Therefore, it is necessary for us to read, memorize, study, and understand all the contents of Al-Qur’an.
Thus, we are able to be His servants who are try our hardest in carrying out the mission as khalifah fil ardh (sucessor) in this dunya.
