Islam valued family as one of the greatest blessing Allah SWT has ever give to Muslim. It makes the family ties as the most important thing to keep the family together. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) has shown us from long ago how to keep family ties in Islam. He loves to joke with the, spending many times with family and always remind her family to stay in the right path and doing good.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) knew how to maintain a good relationship with his extended family as well, seeing how he still sending presents and visiting the family of his deceased wife, Khadijah.
The importance of a family doesn’t decreasing in the modern world nowadays. As the stress of life gets bigger, we need our family support more than anything right now. It’s what makes us stronger and getting through the day with an ease heart.
But as the family grow and each start living separately, we tend to grow apart. Here are how to keep family ties in Islam become very important.
1. Spend Many Quality Times with Family
Spending quality times is important in maintaining the family ties. Do many recreational activity together or just sharing inner thoughts will do, depending on the age of the family member. What we do is not important, but we have to gain more love to our family during the time.
2. Doing a Hobby Together
Among the members of the family, we must have a similar hobby and interest. For example a father and a son going fishing together while the mom and daughter going to the market and cook. This common interest create an even stronger ties between family.
3. Communicate Using Technology
It’s not a big deal if family members are living separately. They could always make use of the technology to stay in touch with each other. Video calling, Skype, and many other media can be used to communicate with our family. There are even group video call so that every member of the family could join together.
4. Strengthening the Relationship with Allah SWT
Never forget Allah SWT in every little step we take in life. Ask His help to keep our family together and as strong as ever. We can invite the whole family to do goodness and worship Allah SWT. It makes our ties stronger.
5. Forgive Their Mistakes
“Whoever pardons and makes reconciliation — his reward is [due] from Allah.” (24:22)
Human make mistakes from time to time to another human, including their own family. If we don’t want the family to be apart, we should forgive them with a big heart.
“… and let them pardon and overlook. Would you not like that Allah should forgive you?” (24:22)

6. Spread Happiness within Family
“When you smile to your brother’s face, it is charity.” [Tirmidhi]
Bring only happiness to your family. Don’t look sulky in front of them and making the mood down. It’s a good deed to be kind and make your family happy.
Jarir bin Abdullah (RA) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) never refused me permission to see him since I embraced Islam and never looked at me except with a smile (on his face). [Bukhari]
7. Eat at Home Together
It may be a little thing but it makes a huge impact for the family ties. Do your best to take the meal at home and not eating outside. The habit makes the family ties stronger since quality time can be spent in the dining room over a meal.

8. Don’t Get Angry Easily
Related with how we should forgive our family mistakes, we should also hold our anger towards them.
“The strong man is not the one who can overpower others (in wrestling); rather, the strong man is the one who controls himself when he gets angry.” [Ahmad]
9. Love Them for Who They are
Our family may not be perfect, but family is a family. Just like how they love us with our imperfections, we must love them for who they are. Even when our house is a little smaller than it should be and we don’t have the latest household equipment, we should be living happily with them
10. Be Patient with Them
“You who believe! Endure and be more patient… and fear Allah, so that you may be successful.” (3:200)
Be patient with the family and big rewards will come after you.
“Only those who are patient shall receive their reward in full, without reckoning.” (8:46)
“And be patient. Surely, Allah is with those who are patient.”
