13 Importance of Repentance in Islam

Repentance is a feeling of regret for bad deeds in the past, then aim your heart to Allah Azza wa Jalla in the rest of your life and control yourself to do bad deeds.

Repentance covers surrender a servant to his Rabb, inabah (back) to Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala. But you should consistent to do His commands forever. So, if you just leave bad deeds, but you do not do good deeds that are loved by Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala, then that is not considered as repentance.

So, repentance that is according to shari’a covers three components, they are :

  1. Back to Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala
  2. Do His commands
  3. Leave His prohibitions

By repenting, we will get many importance or blessing from Allah Subhnahu Wa Ta’ala. What importance of repentance are in Islam. Let us explain for you in this article.

Importance of Repentance in Islam

There are some importance of repentance in Islam that we have to know as Moslem. So that, we can be a servant who is loved by Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala.

  1. Get Allah SWT’s love

Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala loves a person  who repent in His way. Athough that person has done a big sin, but he repents seriously , he always does His commands and leaves His prohibitions, then Allah SWT will forgive and love him. As it is mentioned in Al-Qur’an, which reads :

إِنَّ اللّهَ يُحِبُّ التَّوَّابِينَ وَيُحِبُّ الْمُتَطَهِّرِينَ

“Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves thos who purify themselves.” (Q.S. Al-Baqarah : 222)

  1. A form of obedience to Allah SWT

Repentance is one of obedience form in Islam. By doing repentance, we will be more obey to Allah SWT and Allah will also accept our repentance.

As it is mention in Al-Quran, Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala said,

وَاللّهُ يُرِيدُ أَن يَتُوبَ عَلَيْكُمْ وَيُرِيدُ الَّذِينَ يَتَّبِعُونَ الشَّهَوَاتِ أَن تَمِيلُواْ مَيْلاً عَظِيماً

 “Allah wants to accept your repentance.” (Q.S. An-Nisa : 27)

  1. Get His forgiveness and His blessings

As it is mentioned in Al-Qur’an Surah Al-A’raf verse 153, which reads :

 

وَالَّذِينَ عَمِلُواْ السَّيِّئَاتِ ثُمَّ تَابُواْ مِن بَعْدِهَا وَآمَنُواْ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ مِن بَعْدِهَا لَغَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ

“But those who committed misdeeds and then repented after them and believed – indeed your Lord, thereafter, is Forgiving and Merciful.” (Q.S. Al-A’raf : 153)

  1. Our good deeds will be accepted by Allah SWT

Repentance is a way to get forgiveness from Allah SWT and our good deeds are accepted by Him.

وَهُوَ الَّذِي يَقْبَلُ التَّوْبَةَ عَنْ عِبَادِهِ وَيَعْفُو عَنِ السَّيِّئَاتِ

“And it is He who accepts repentance from his servants and pardons misdeeds, and He knows what you do.” (Q.S. Ash Shuraa : 25)

  1. Can replace badness with goodness

Allah Subahanahu Wa Ta’ala said,

وَمَن يَفْعَلْ ذَلِكَ يَلْقَ أَثَاماً يُضَاعَفْ لَهُ الْعَذَابُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ وَيَخْلُدْ فِيهِ مُهَاناً إِلَّا مَن تَابَ وَآمَنَ وَعَمِلَ عَمَلاً صَالِحاً فَأُوْلَئِكَ يُبَدِّلُ اللَّهُ سَيِّئَاتِهِمْ حَسَنَاتٍ وَكَانَ اللَّهُ غَفُوراً رَّحِيماً

“And those who do not invoke with Allah another deity or kill the soul which Allah has forbidden [to be killed], except by right, and do not commit unlawful sexual intercourse. And whoever should do that will meet a penalty. Multiplied for him is the punishment on the Day of Resurrection, and he will abide therein humiliated – Except for those who repent, believe and do righteous work. For them Allah will replace their evil deeds with good. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.” (Q.S. Al-Furqon : 68 – 70)

  1. Purify the heart

If someone do sins, the his heart will be uncomfortable.Rasulullah saw said :

“Whoever do one sin, then there will grow in his heart a black speck, if he repents, then that black speck will be eroded from his heart. If he does not repent, then that black speck will blacken all of his heart.” (Narrated by Ibn Majah)

  1. Get fortunes

If we repents, we will get some fortunes. As the word of Allah SWT, which reads :

وَتُوبُوا إِلَى اللَّهِ جَمِيعاً أَيُّهَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ

“And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.” (Q.S. An-Nur : 31)

  1. A way to enter the Heaven

Repentance is a way to enter the Heaven and it can save us from a fiery hell. Allah SWT said,

فَخَلَفَ مِن بَعْدِهِمْ خَلْفٌ أَضَاعُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَاتَّبَعُوا الشَّهَوَاتِ فَسَوْفَ يَلْقَوْنَ غَيّاً إِلَّا مَن تَابَ وَآمَنَ وَعَمِلَ صَالِحاً فَأُوْلَئِكَ يَدْخُلُونَ الْجَنَّةَ وَلَا يُظْلَمُونَ شَيْئاً

“But there came after them successors who neglected prayer and pursued desires; so they are going to meet evil. Except those who repent, believe and do righteousness; for those will enter Heaven and will not be wronged at all.” (Q.S.Maryam : 59 – 60)

  1. Prevent punishment and torment

We will be happy, if we can avoid from badness. So, let us repent because one importance of repentance can prevent punishment and torment. Allah SWT said,

“But Allah would not punish them while you, [O Muhammad], are among them, and Allah would not punish them while they seek forgiveness.” (Q.S. Al-Anfal : 33)

  1. Get Dua from angels

Allah SWT said,

الَّذِينَ يَحْمِلُونَ الْعَرْشَ وَمَنْ حَوْلَهُ يُسَبِّحُونَ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّهِمْ وَيُؤْمِنُونَ بِهِ وَيَسْتَغْفِرُونَ لِلَّذِينَ آمَنُوا رَبَّنَا وَسِعْتَ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ رَّحْمَةً وَعِلْماً فَاغْفِرْ لِلَّذِينَ تَابُوا وَاتَّبَعُوا سَبِيلَكَ وَقِهِمْ عَذَابَ الْجَحِيمِ

“Those [angels] who carry the Throne and those around it exalt [Allah] with praise of their Lord and believe in Him and ask forgiveness for those who have believed, [saying], “Our Lord, You have encompassed all things in mercy and knowledge, so forgive those who have repented and followed Your way and protect them from the punishment of Hellfire.” (Q.S. Ghafir : 7)

  1. Can get many goodness

Allah SWT said,

 فَإِن تُبْتُمْ فَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ

“So if you repent, that is best for you.” (Q.S. At-Tawbah : 3)

  1. Expedite Rizq

By repenting and asking forgiveness from Allah SWT, will expedite our rizq. As it is mentioned in Al-Qur’an Surah Hud verse 3, which reads :

“Seek forgiveness of your Lord and repent to Him, [and] He will let you enjoy a good provision for a specified term and give every doer of favor his favor. But if you turn away, then indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a great Day.”

  1. Get faithful and a big reward

Allah SWT said,

إِلاَّ الَّذِينَ تَابُواْ وَأَصْلَحُواْ وَاعْتَصَمُواْ بِاللّهِ وَأَخْلَصُواْ دِينَهُمْ لِلّهِ فَأُوْلَـئِكَ مَعَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَسَوْفَ يُؤْتِ اللّهُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَجْراً عَظِيماً

“Except for those who repent, correct themselves, hold fast to Allah, and are sincere in their religion for Allah, for those will be with the believers. And Allah is going to give the believers a great reward.” (Q.S. An-Nisa : 146)
