So, the term haram money is just a parable. Money becomes forbidden because of the results of acts that violate the prohibition of religion, then the haram is li ghairi (because deeds) not li zatihi (because the substance). Read (Ways to Get Good Deeds in Islam)

Money is agreed as one form of wealth, then people will do activities such as working to earn money. There are some people who are looking for money in a lawful way and some are using haram methods. Haram property is divided into two, namely haram property due to work or how to get it. And the treasure is haram because of its substance. Here’s the explanation :

2. Haram due to its nature or substance

What is meant by haram property because of its nature or substance is Islam’s haram food such as pork, dog meat, animals slaughtered on behalf of other than Allah and haram animals in Islam that are clearly prohibited to be consumed. (Read Law of Hunting in Islam)

3. Haram property due to work or how to get it

The point is, the treasure is haram because of how to get it in a way that is not halal. For example, a person acquires property through gambling, property from bank interest according to Islam, property of deceit, stealing, and others.

This type of property is strictly forbidden in Islam, therefore we as a good Muslim must be warned (cautious) and avoid the food or property that contains the things of the syubhat (idleness of the halal or the haram of something) that comes from dirty job (not halal).

Someone once asked Ibn Mas’ud ra. about his neighbors who eat riba treasure blatantly, but did not feel guilty about the property he earned in a bad way.

Then his neighbor invited him to eat. And Ibnu Mas’ud said

Fulfill his invitation. Indeed  the pleasure of the food that belongs to you, and the sin is against that person “And in a narration’s history he said,”I do not know anything that belongs to him, except for bad things or haram things, “but Ibn Mas’ud keep responding “Fulfill the invitation,”

And in the hadith of Rasulullah SAW. there are several hadiths that explain that he had eaten food from the Jews and made transactions with them, but in the Quran it was described that the Jews ate their riba wealth and haram property. (Read Strict Prohibition of Speculation in Islam). The hadiths are as follows:

• Hadith Anas bun Malik ra. he said:

Verily, a Jewish woman brings a goat (meat) that has been poisoned to the Prophet Muhammad SAW, then he still eat the meat …” (Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim)

  • Hadith Aisyah ra. he said:

Rasulullah SAW. died, while his armor was plagued by a Jew with thirty shâ ‘jelay prices. (Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim)And there are some religious scholars on the legal issue of accepting haram money, as follows :

Someone once asked Ibn Baz rahimahullah:

Can I borrow something from someone whose trade is known to be haram and he takes haram things?

Then Ibnu Baz replied

You, my brother, do not deserve to borrow from this person or do muamalah with him throughout his entire life is a haram thing and is known by riba muamalah which is banned, or otherwise.

So you can not do muamalah with him nor borrow from him, but you must clean and stay away from it. However, if he does muamalah with haram things, and with something other than haram, that is that his muamalah is something that looks good, but some are bad, it is no problem  (you do muamalah) with him, but leaving it is actually more afdhal based on the word ( Rasulullah) shallallâhu ‘alaihi wa sallam. which instructs us to abandon everything that is dubious and make us go to the undoubted. “

So, it can be concluded from some of the above opinions about the law of accepting gifts or treated with haram money is not allowed, if we know the origin of where and how the money that is used to treat is obtained and we better refuse it smoothly and well. However, if we do not know at all where and how the money to treat is obtained.
So, hopefully this article is useful.
