10 Reasons Why Islam Forbid to Celebrate Valentine Day

Valentine’s day is actually called as St. Valentine’s Day, it was the feast of Saint Valentine and always celebrate at 14th February each years. It was originating as Western Christian feast day but nowadays we found that this celebration spread across the world and be a common celebration. For youngster and other people in majority classified this day as the cultural celebration of love, romance and romantic things.

Law of Celebrating Valentine Day

For this is the clear law, that celebrating or cult the day except written in Quran for Muslims are forbidden and included as haram things. It may still be debatable for certain people same as the law of playing music in mosque and law of being banker in Islam. By any reasons we are not allowed to celebrate Valentine Day. It is not permissible in Islam.

“You will certainly follow the ways of those who came before you, span by span, cubit by cubit, until even if they were to enter a lizard’s hole, you would follow them. We said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, (do you mean) the Jews and Christians?’ He said, ‘Who else?’

Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim

From the hadith, the Prophet directly forbid us to follow anything resemble or related to other religion or practice beside Islam, and Valentine Day is resembling to Christian’s day of celebration.

Now let’s us discuss about the reasons why Islam forbid to celebrate Valentine Day any further. Here are some of the explanations why muslims are forbidden to celebrate Valentine :

1. It’s not in accordance to Islam

There is no basic rules or laws in Islam for Muslim to celebrate Valentine. While Islam also teach Muslims to always focus only for Sharia law, good deed, or any deed that exemplified by the Prophet.

2. In practice it is contrary to Islamic teaching

Valentine day and it’s spirit is in contrary to Islamic teaching. From the actual event that happened in the past years, Valentine day has become a romantic event. That time couple that in passionate love encourage to celebrate their romantic love in this day. The event became a relation of love from woman to man, boyfriends, girlfriends, and it change the subject from pure love to lust. You may want to read also about law of tort in Islam.

While Islam more emphasis love only to Allah SWT and His Messenger, or pure love that involved between family or parent to child and vice versa, or from husband and wife.

3. It is a culture of other religion

We all know that Valentine comes from Christian culture, and it evolved through time so it was accepted by many people. Islam forbid Muslims to do anything or even wear anything that related to a culture of other religion.

As the Prophet said in the following hadith,

“Whoever imitates a people is one of them.”

Narrated by Ahmad and Abu Dawud

It means that if we follow the custom and tradition of other religion then we are considered as one of them. This is also applied for Valentine Day that has influence from Christian culture.

4. It may lead Muslims to disbelief

Is it possible that Valentine make Muslims into disbeliever? Well indeed it is, and it’s one of the reason why Islam forbid to celebrate valentine day. When someone is preoccupied of Valentine’s euphoria, it’s only a matter of time when they will get distracted by that. Event, ceremonial, buy or even spare money to buy present they can forget time.

The worst part is if they allowed one of other religion culture to be part of them, it may lead another culture or tradition to infiltrate into someone’s heart. 5. It may lead Muslims to something in vain

Buy present, something expensive, dinner with boyfriend, girlfriend, or make a party is all things that might lead Muslims into something in vain. We must prepare our time, money, and effort to prepare those things and even our mind. While those magnificent time should be spent for worship, studying, or other important activities.

6. It can caused forgetfulness of worship

As mentioned before that if we spend to much time for preparing party and present or event for Valentine day it can caused us forget about worship. While we know that worship is more important than anything else.

7. The Prophet always encourage Muslims to not follow the crowd

From the verse below,

“And We have revealed to you, (O Muhammad), the Book in truth, confirming that which preceded it of the Scripture and as a criterion over it. So judge between them by what Allah has revealed and do not follow their inclinations away from what has come to you of the truth. To each of you We prescribed a law and a method. Had Allah willed, He would have made you one nation (united in religion), but (He intended) to test you in what He has given you; so race to (all that is) good. To Allah is your return all together, and He will (then) inform you concerning that over which you used to differ.”

QS. Al-Maidah : 48

This verse mentioned about the fact that Allah SWT has been created law and method distinct from the previous for Muslims to be set as guidance. 8. Love in Islam must be spread all day and all time

Islam always encourage Muslims to spread love every time. Muslims should not shackled to spread love for certain time or day. And the form of love can be vary in Islam. Muslims also recommended to perform good deed as the form of love, we can do it both for Allah SWT or other people and creatures.

9. Islam has put a clear rules and custom, Muslims should not against it

Another reason why Islam forbid to celebrate Valentine day is that Allah SWT already give Islam and Muslims their own identity. We also have our own Eid (sacred day). Why should we follow other custom when we do understand that it’s against the Islamic law?

10. The result of Valentine day is something haram

Don’t we see nowadays Valentine becoming more and more commercial. It’s involving all practice that prohibits by Islam like music, singing, dancing, adultery, and many more.

After knowing the reason why Islam forbid to celebrate Valentine day, as a good Muslims it is better for us to avoid any event related to it.
