The Intentions of Fasting Tasu’a And Ashura and Their Evidence

Muharram is a glorious month for muslim people, where we can do multiply various kinds of pious deeds by doing the fasting sunnah. In addition to Monday and Thursday sunnah fasting , the sunnah fasting that only exists in the month of Muharram is Tasu’a and Ashura Fasting.

Both of these sunnah fasting have their own privileges. The virtues of Fasting Tasua are contained in the argument below.

It means, “From Abdullah bin Abbas RA, he said that Rasulullah SAW said, ‘If I lived until next year, surely I would fast on Day Nine (Muharram)’ in the history of Abu Bakar he said, that is on the tenth day (Muharam ), ‘”(Muslim HR).

Tasua fasting is derived from the word tis’a which means nine. So that’s why Tasua fasting held on the ninth day of muharam. The virtue of this is to exclude Jews. Because in Jews culture, Jews and Christian the ninth day of muharam is a glorified date.

Abdullah bin Abbas radhiyallahu ‘anhu said . “When Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa salam  did ‘Asyura fasting and ordered his friend to do ‘Asyura fasting, so his friend said : “ O, Rasulullah, it is a day that is glorified by Jews and Christians. “

So he said, “If so, in the coming year we will also fast on the ninth day, Insya Allah.”

Evidently, that next year is yet to come, the Rasulullah sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa salam had died. “(HR.Muslim, No. 1134)

Meanwhile, Fasting ‘Ashura is one of the sunnah fasting in the month of Muharram which is highly recommended. Ashura fasting provides benefits to those who practice it, which can eliminate sins a year ago.

Rasulullah shalallahu ‘alayhi wassalam said.

“As for Ashura fasting, I ask to Allah that the fasting can erase the sins of the previous year,” (Hadith Muslim History no. 1976)

In the Islamic Fatwa (no. 21785) it states:

Imam As-Syafii and his followers, Imam Ahmad, Ishaq bin Rahuyah, and other scholars said: Fasting on the ninth and tenth day (Muharam) in sequence. Because the Rasulullah sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam had carried out fasting on the 10th and he had planned fasting on the 9th (Muharram).

The intentions are a must before saying various kinds of sunnah fasting. Including when it will run Fasting Tasu’a and Ashura Fasting. Here is the intention:

This is the reading of Ashura Fasting intentions,

Nawaitu shauma ghadin ‘an adâ’i sunnatil âsyûrâ lillâhi ta‘âlâ

Meaning: I intend to fast the Ashura of Ashura tomorrow because of Allah SWT.

Meanwhile, the intention of fasting readings Tasu`a namely,

Nawaitu shauma ghadin ‘an adâ’i sunnatit Tasû‘â lillâhi ta‘âlâ

Meaning: I intend to fast the Tasu`a sunah tomorrow because of Allah SWT.

That’s a review of the intention of Fasting Tasu’a and Fasting ‘Ashura you can know. Hopefully we can all undergo the fasting of the sunnah which falls on 9 and 10 September 2019, as well as other deeds in the month of Muharram with sincere lillahi ta’ala. Aamiin
