15 Effective Ways to Control Anger in Islam

Living in the world full of pressures makes us suffer from anger tantrums every time. Especially, when we’re living in the big city, which mostly populated by individualist people, with the high-risk of job-stress, insane traffic, etc. It all can easily provokes negative emotion around us.

However, by understanding the circumstance we need to find at least solutions to reduce our negative emotion because our negative emotion can easily trigger our anger. Therefore, we’re now going to find out at least 15 ways to control anger in Islam.

  1. Don’t Choose Being in Anger

Anger is a matter of choice. We can’t be burst into anger unexpectedly, we choose to be that way. The hadith below told us that our Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah may be upon Him) reminded us that Muslims have a choice to decide whether they need to be in anger or not.

“Do not become angry and furious” (Al-Bukhari)

2. Remember Than Anger Only Wastes Your Energy

Shouting, yelling, and swearing when we are burst into anger doesn’t solve anything at all. It only embarrasses you because eventually people will stay away from you. The best way to spend your emotion is by choosing not to be in anger. Instead of doing that, why don’t you talk to your closest people whenever you’re in an anger?

3. Anger is Often So Destructive

Believe it, anger only gives you more harm than good. When you’re in such bad emotion, your circumstance will be followed by another negativity like frustration, skepticism, cynicism, etc. By understanding that anger is destructive, you need to learn how to prevent yourself not being in anger. Besides that, anger is so toxic among your relationship with other people.

4. Make Du’a

Du’a is actually the best weapon for us to protect us from any bad behaviors including anger tantrums. You can find out the values of du’a in The Importance of Dua in Islam . Besides that, the hadith below also told us the same thing:

“O Allah, by Your knowledge of the Unseen and Your power over Your creation, keep me alive for as long as You know life is good for me, and cause me to die when You know death is good for me. O Allah, I ask You to make me fear You in secret and in public, and I ask You to make me speak the truth in times of contentment and of anger. I ask You not to let me be extravagant in poverty or in prosperity. I ask You for continuous blessings, and for contentment that does not end. I ask You to let me accept Your decree, and for a good life after death. I ask You for the joy of seeing Your face and for the longing to meet You, without going through diseases and misguiding fitnah (trials). O Allah, adorn us with the adornment of faith and make us among those who are guided. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds”. (Hassan: Darussalam).

5. Think Twice to Be in Anger

Whenever you feel angry or upset, think twice to be in anger. Sometimes, anger can be more toxic than poison. Within minutes, you can destroy your relationship, or even it can occur bloodshed. So, think twice before you decide to be in anger.

6. Forgiving is a Way Better

It’s better to forgive others who hurt, offend, or harm us, rather than be in anger. Forgiving is miraculous. It is told in Qur’an 42:40 that those who are willing to forgive others will get the reward from Allah. Imagine, how great it is to keep the promise of Allah!  If Allah promise us his reward by forgiving others, the reward will be greater than what he have been giving us in our daily life.

وَجَزَٰٓؤُا۟ سَيِّئَةٍ سَيِّئَةٌ مِّثْلُهَا ۖ فَمَنْ عَفَا وَأَصْلَحَ فَأَجْرُهُۥ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ لَا يُحِبُّ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ

But [remember that an attempt at] requiting evil may, too, become an evil: hence, whoever pardons [his foe] and makes peace, his reward rests with God – for, verily, He does not love evildoers (Qur’an 42:40)

7. Make Wudu and Change Our Position

Our beloved Prophet (peace and blessing of Allah may be upon Him) told us that when we’re angry, try to change our position and loof for fresher atmosphere. We need to make wudu for a better feeling if changing position doesn’t work at all as the Hadith below told us:

“If one of you got angry while standing then sit down, or if sitting down then lay down. If anger does not go away then do Wudu”. (Ahmad and Abo Dawood)

8. Stay Being Calm and Silent

Our beloved Prophet (peace and blessing of Allah may be upon Him) told us that when we’re angry, we often get attempted to swear the words we’ll regret for the rest of our lives. To prevent ourselves doing that kind of thing, better for us to stay being calm and silent until we can control our temper. It is told in the hadith below:

If any of you becomes angry, let him keep silent.” (Imaam Ahmad, al-Musnad)

9. Repeat Saying A’oodhu Billaahi min al-Shaitan ir-rajeem 

A’oodhu Billaahi min al-Shaitan ir-rajeem means “I seek refuge with Allah from the accursed Satan.” Our Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah may be upon Him) told us that seeking refuge with Allah when we’re in anger is such a helpful way since anger itself is the depiction of Satan’s bad temper. Repeat saying “A’oodhu Billaahi min al-Shaitan ir-rajeem” and you will eventually lose your bad emotion.

10. Believe The Strongest One is The One Who Can Control Himself

By bursting into anger, we don’t automatically confirm our power. Our prophet (peace and blessings of Allah may be upon him) said:

“The strong man is not the one who can overpower others (in wrestling); rather, the strong man is the one who controls himself when he gets angry.” (Ahmad).

  • Remember than Allah is mightier and more powerful than you
  • Let go the grudges to prevent being in a long-term anger
  • Believe that controlling anger lessen our stress
  • Believe that the reward of controlling anger is more tremendous than anything else in this world
  • Keep maintaining our prayers everyday

I think it is clear enough to understand how to control our anger as Muslims. May we can always maintain our good deeds and be kind to others. May peace always be upon us as the believer of Allah!
