Health is the most important thing in life. With a healthy body, we are able to do our best to worship Allah SWT as well as doing other activities for living. Our beloved Prophet (peace be upon him) was a perfectly healthy man, thus he was able to lead an army during the war and bring our religion number of victory. The Prophet used to walk to maintain his health. There are indeed many benefits of walking in Islam that we can also gain:
- Helps Maintaining the Weight
Maintaining a stable weight is important for health. Walking helps to reduce some fat in the body.
Aisha (RA) stated that, “I raced with the Prophet and I beat him. Later, when I had put on some weight, we raced again and he won. Then he said, ” This cancels that (referring to the previous race). ” (Bukhari)
- Gain a Healthier Body Like the Prophet

Reported by Ali, “When he walked, because of the speed and force of the legs, it seemed as if he was descending from a high place.” (Tirmidhi)
The Prophet were known as a healthy man among his followers that no one can ever match his steps and always in awe of him.
As narrated by Abu Hurairah, “I did not see anyone walk faster than him, as is the earth folded for him. A few moments ago he would be here, and then there. We found it difficult to keep pace when we walked with him and he walked at his normal pace.”
- To be a Strong Believer

Walking is an exercise or activity that is very good for digestion system. It utilizes the core in it and train the abdominal muscles to be stronger. That is why for a patient who just have a surgery, it necessary to take a walk so that his digestion system can work back to normal again.

One simple activity can surprisingly brings many goods for our body. Only by walking, we are improving the health of our heart by reducing the risk of the cardiovascular diseases. - Lowering Blood Pressure
Another health benefits of walking in Islam is to lowering the blood pressure. There were an experiment which conducted in Japan to hypertension patients to walk 10,000 steps a day for 12 weeks. As the result, all the 83 participants show a significant result, which their blood pressure was dropping and their stamina is increasing. But the 10,000 is flexible, as long as we walk everyday, it will be very good for the body.
- Fighting Cancer
Cancer remains one the most deadly disease in the world. It takes million of lives every year. But cancer can be prevented as early as possible by maintaining our healthy body. Walking not only helps to lowering the weight only but also reducing the risk of cancer, reducing the side effects of chemotherapy for cancer patients, and lowering the risk of breast cancer as well. - Reducing the Risk of Diabetes
Diabetes in another degenerative diseases that threaten lives and causing problems to the body function as a whole is diabetes. The diseases was share by blood and passed down within family. However, the risk of diabetes can be lowered by taking a walk for 3,000 to 5,000 steps a day. It helps to control the blood sugar levels and preventing the type 2 diabetes.
- Strengthening the Bones
Our bodies aging alongside us. But we can stay as fit as we were younger even though we are getting old every other day. Exercising daily helps to strengthen the body and bones, so that we are able to stay fit no matter what. Walking reduces that risks of bones fracture, injury, and osteoporosis. Another disease that threaten us as we are getting old is dementia. It a disease in which we have a gradual memory loss and cognitive function. The disease makes us hard to do daily activities. Preventing dementia is one of the many benefits of walking in Islam that anyone can have.
