17 Healthy Ways How to Improve Health in Islam

Health is something that is not easily gained in this world and some people say that it is expensive and can’t be bought with money. It needs to be taken care so we can do all activities without a problem. Islam as a perfect and complete religion has set the principles in guarding the balance of the human body for health.

Among the ways, Islam maintains health by maintaining hygiene and implementing syariat wudlu and bathing routinely for every Muslim. Healthy is a physical condition in which all functions are in good health. Being well after sickness is the best gift from Allah to human. It is impossible to act rightly and pay proper attention to obedience to Allah if the body is unwell.

“There are two gifts that therefore many human beings are deceived, that is good health and leisure time.” (HR Bukhari)

Here is presented how to improve health in Islam.

1. Do not eat before hunger and stop eating before full

Something excessive is not good and Allah does not like it such as eating too much even though we have already been full. It is also not good to eat when we are still not hungry because it can affect our health. We need to eat properly so our health will be improved.

“The Son of Adam did not fill a worse place than his stomach. Suffice for them some bribes that can function his body. If there is no other way, then (he can fill his stomach) with one third for food, one third for drink, and one third for the breath. “ (HR Ibnu Majah and Ibnu Hibban)

2. Wake up in the morning

We need to wake up in the morning because it has a fresh air and our body function works well in the morning. There are some people who still sleep until noon, especially during the holiday. It can cause the laziness and the function of the body will be hung up. In addition, it is our obligation to wake up in the morning to do prayer and salat so it can improve the spiritual health too.

Whoever wakes up in the morning with a healthy body and a healthy soul too, and his sustenance is guaranteed, then he is like a man who has the whole world. (HR At-Tirmidzi)

3. Rest enough and sleep well

Islam emphasizes the regularity of regulating the rhythm of life by way of adequate sleep, adequate rest. Islam gives guidance to set time for rest for the body. Sleep and vigilance arrangements are arranged proportionally, each member of the body has the right to be fulfilled.

“The Prophet once said to me: O Allah’s servant, did not I preach that you fasted in sz’am? day and qiyamul lail at night, then I say, true the Messenger of Allah, the Prophet replied: Do not do that, fast and break it, wake up at night and sleep, because, on your body, there is a right and in your side also have rights. “ (HR Bukhari and Muslim)

4. Do exercise

The ultimate goal of doing exercise is to enhance positive health, endurance, muscle power, emotional balance, the efficiency of body-tool functions, and expressive power and creative power. By doing sport gradually, regularly, and enough will improve and improve physical fitness, strengthen and nourish the body. With the physical freshness of a person will be able to move well.

In the view of the fiqh scholars, exercise (Arabic: al-Riyadhat) belongs to the field of ijtihadiyat. In general, the law to do it is a mubah, even can be worth worship. The implementation of exercise is not contrary to Islamic norms.

“The parts of organs that are heavily moved will be strong, especially in relation to the type of exercise, even the whole power begins from here, for example, who memorizes a lot of it will be strong memorization, who many think will be the strong intelligence of his mind. Horseback riding, archery, wrestling and running competitions are physical exercise, all of which can eliminate chronic diseases like leprosy, dropsy, and stomachache. “ (Zaadul Maad juz 3/145).

5. Maintain cleanliness and hygiene

Islamic teachings are very concerned about hygiene issues which are one important aspect of medical science. In Islamic terminology, the problems associated with cleanliness are called al-Thaharat. From the perspective of hygiene and health, al-thaharat is one form of preventive efforts, useful to avoid the spread of various types of germs and bacteria.

By maintaining it, we can improve our health significantly because we have already got rid the bacteria that is the main cause of disease.

O you who believe! When you stand up for the prayer, then wash your faces and your hands till the elbows and wipe your heads and your feet till the ankles. But if you are (in) a state of ceremonial impurity then purify yourselves. But if you are ill or on a journey or has come anyone of you from the toilet or has (had) contact (with) the women and not you find water, then do (with) earth clean, then wipe your faces and your hands with it. Allah (does) not intend to make for you any difficulty but He intends to purify you and to complete His Favor upon you so that you may (be) grateful. (Al-Maidah 5:6)

6. Clean hands before eating

Cleaning hand is needed before eating especially when we don’t use the spoon to eat but use hands directly because there are some bacteria after touching something that may go to our body when we using hands. The bacteria can be dangerous so we need to avoid this to improve our health.

7. Brush the teeth

Brushing the teeth can improve our health because there are some leftovers or germs on our teeth after eating especially sticky food. Many mouth diseases such as sprue, toothache, and other else are because we don’t brush our teeth clean enough. It may be a small thing but it can affect our health significantly.

From Aisha radhiyallahu ‘anha that the Prophet sallallaahu’ alaihi wa sallam said: “Do siwak (brush teeth) will make the mouth clean and blessed by Allah.” (HR An Nasa’i, Ahmad)

8. Breath fresh air and avoid smoke

To improve health, it is important to breath fresh air because it is good to accelerate the function of the body. Oxygen is something that is very useful and moves all the body system so we need to get it as much as possible. In addition, we need to avoid smoke, especially vehicle emission that can cause some diseases such as cancer and respiratory disorders.

And among His Signs (is) that He sends the winds (as) bearers of glad tidings and to let you taste of His Mercy, and that may sail the ships at His Command, and that you may seek of His Bounty, and that you may be grateful. (Ar-Rum 30:46)

9. Don’t drink liquor and intoxicating drink

Any intoxicating drink is khamer and that every intoxicant is haram. Whoever is addicted to liquor and die then do not repent then he will not drink it in the afterlife. This drink can cause the addiction and forget the world and Allah. In addition, it has some dangerous compounds that can affect our health so we need to avoid this.

O you who believe! Verily the intoxicants and [the] games of chance and (sacrifices at) altars and divining arrows (are an) abomination from (the) work (of) the Shaitaan, so avoid it so that you may (be) successful. (Al-Maidah 5:90)

10. Walk more

We need to walk more so we can improve our health. It can increase our stamina and fatigue so we can become more durable. We can start this by walking to every near place and don’t use and depend on vehicles too much. We have already known that Prophet always walks on foot even though He goes to far place because there weren’t any vehicles in the past.

“Verily, the Messenger of Allah walks bravely.” (HR Muslim)
