Every one of us wants to be happy. No one wants to be miserable, either in the world or in the hereafter. However, the reality is not all of us can be happy in his life. Surely the happiness of living in the view of Islam does not dwell on the material side only.
Although Islam recognizes that matter becomes part of the element of happiness itself. Where in the view of Islam, the material matter is only a means, not a purpose. Therefore, Islam gives great attention to ma’nawi elements such as having faith and noble mind and character as a way to get the happiness of life.
“It is okay with the rich for the righteous. And health for the righteous is better than the rich. And happy is part of the pleasure. “ (HR Ibnu Majah No 2132)
Here is presented how to gain happiness in Islam.
1. Improve iman and faith
Having iman and faith can make ourselves become a resistant human in this world. It is because we can gain happiness by having this. It also acts as a means to eliminate misery. The believer knows he will always be tested in his life as a consequence of faith, then will grow in him the strength of patience, spirit, trust in Allah, put his trust in Him, plead for His protection, and fear Him.
These potentials include the primary means of realizing the noble purpose of life and being ready for the test of life.
Those who believed and (did) not mix their belief with wrong, those, for them, (is) the security and they (are) rightly guided. (Al-An’am 6:82)

2. Increase dhikr
Indeed the pleasure of the servant depends on the place of dependence. Allah is the Essence that makes us feel happy and our chest becomes calm by dhikr or remembering Him. As Muslims, we ask Him for help and get away from danger.
Therefore, Islam teaches some dhikr that binds between a believer with Allah Ta’ala according to place and time, that is when there is something to expect or something to worry about. These dhikrs bind us with Allah so that we will return all the consequences to the one who predestined it.
Those who believed and find satisfaction their hearts in the remembrance (of) Allah. No doubt, in the remembrance of Allah find satisfaction the hearts.” (Ar-Ra’d 13:28)
3. Maintain health
Health here covers all sides; body, soul, mind, and spirit. Maintaining the health of the body is a human nature because it is related to survival and also a means to meet material needs such as eating, drinking, clothing, and vehicles. Of course, if our health is bad, we can’t gain happiness and we will feel troublesome and busy to cure it. To avoid this, we must maintain our health to keep happy and live on in the world.
“Don’t (do/use something) harmful or harm (others).” (HR Ahmad and Ibnu Majah)

4. Use the wealth wisely
Using the wealth that Allah gives to us wisely will make us feel happy because it affects us when having a choice in the life. We will not regret the choice when spending the wealth if we use it wisely. We also need to maintain ourselves when having wealth because it can make us feel distant to Allah and only loves the wealth, not Allah and forget everything. It can create other sins if we use wrong ways to get it more.
O you who believe! (Let) not divert you your wealth and not your children from (the) remembrance (of) Allah. And whoever does that, then those [they] (are) the losers. And spend from what We have provided you before [that] comes (to) one of you the death and he says, “My Lord! Why not You delay me for a term near so I would give charity and be among the righteous.” (Al-Munafiqun 63:9-10)

5. Become a patient human
We have already known that we will live in this world with a difficult problem that encounters our life as a test from Allah. The test that Allah gives to human will always fill the human life that leads him to be patient, willing strong, determined, tawakkal, and other else. All this will bring peace and happiness. If we can pass and continue to live on, we will become a better human and get a happy life.
And surely We will test you with something of [the] fear and [the] hunger and loss of [the] wealth and [the] lives and [the] fruits, but give good news (to) the patient ones. Those who, when strikes them a misfortune, they say, “Indeed, we belong to Allah and indeed we towards Him will return.” Those on them (are) blessings from their Lord and Mercy. And those [they] (are) the guided ones. (Al-Baqarah 2:155-157)

Humans are social beings who must interact with others. We can not live alone without the need of others to meet all our needs. In addition, we can laugh, talk, share, and help each other so we can gain happiness by interacting with other people. However, If we don’t interact wisely then it will be the cause of misery and bring sadness and distress.
So because (of) Mercy from Allah, you dealt gently with them. And if you had been rude (and) harsh (at) [the] heart, surely they (would have) dispersed from around you. Then pardon [from] them and ask forgiveness for them and consult them in the matter. Then when you have decided, then put trust on Allah. Indeed, Allah loves the ones who put trust (in Him). (Al-Imran 3:159) [AdSense-A]
7. Marry a good wife and have a happy family
Getting married with a good wife can create a new life that gains happiness. It is because we don’t need to carry the problem in the life alone. By getting married, we will share our happiness, sadness, and problem with our wife and it is better than living alone.
“Three indications of the happiness of Adam’s son, and three indications of Adam’s children’s misery; the indication of happiness is the wife of shalehah, a good place to live and a good vehicle. While an indication of the misery of Adam’s son is a bad morality wife, a bad place to live and a bad vehicle. “ (HR Ahmad No 1368)

Fasting must be done by Muslim because Allah has already commanded it. There are many benefits of doing fasting and we will be happier. We will learn to appreciate the blessings that Allah has given us. In addition, Allah has promised the happiness of people that do fasting in the Hereafter.
“Verily Allah ‘azza wajalla multiplied one goodness of Adam’s child to ten to seven hundred times except fasting. Fasting is for Me and I who respond. The fasting person has two blisses; happiness when breaking and happiness on the Day of Judgment. And the smell of the mouth of the fasting one is sweeter in the sight of Allah than the scent of the fragrance. “ (HR Ahmad No 4036)
9. Always grateful to Allah SWT
Humans will always want something to meet their needs and feel a lack of everything they have. This leads to the goal of the human that chases after all they want in this world. In order to avoid this, we must always grateful to Allah for every small sustenance that Allah gives to us. We will feel happier because our goal is changed from wanting everything in this world to only want something from Allah.
And when proclaimed your Lord, “If you are thankful, surely I will increase you; but if you are ungrateful indeed, My punishment (is) surely severe.” (Ibrahim 14:7)

Call to (the) way (of) your Lord with the wisdom and the instruction the good, and discuss with them in that which (is) best. Indeed, your Lord, He (is) most knowing of who has strayed from His way, And He (is) most knowing of the guided ones. (An-Nahl 16:125)
