14 Ways on How To Name A Child In Islam

Giving a name for a child in Islam is a dua. In giving a good name to children there are certain conditions in Islam. The following below here are 14 how to name a child in Islam, how is the law, and how is the forbidden name that is bad for a child. Let’s check these out.

  1. The importance of a name in Islam

The name in Islam is important, it is intended that the child can know who he is, and how others will know him someday. The following below here Allah Almighty says in a Holy of Quran.

“(He was told): ‘O, Zechariyah, indeed We give thee good news of a son: His name shall be Yahya: on none by that name have We conferred distinction before.'” (Verse 19:7)

2. Giving a name is the obligation of parents

The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) once said that one of the obligations of a parent is to give a child a good name. This obligation must be concerned by a parent who has a child. 3. The right of a father

A father has an important role in Islam, so the father has his right to give their child name. In Islam, a father has the right to his son’s sentence. Therefore, every child in Islam is always called by his father’s name like Adam bin Abdul Qasim. Below the following here Allah Almighty says in the Holy of the Quran.

“Call them by (the names of) their fathers; it is more just in sight of Allah. But, if you do not know their fathers- then they are (still) your brothers in religion and those entrusted to you. And there is no blame upon you for that in which you have erred but (only for) what your heart intended. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful”(Verse 33:5)

4. Some conditions for a good name

The conditions for giving names to children must be right and good. Indeed, a name is a prayer and this cannot be done carelessly. “And to Allah belong the best names, so invoke Him by them. And leave (the company of) those who practice deviation concerning His names. They will be recompensed for what they have been doing.”
(Verse 7:180)

5. The effect of a good name on the child

What is the reason in Islam, we should give our child a good name? Indeed, while we are giving a good name on the child, it is one of a good deed in Islam. This good deed also gets many rewards. Below the following here The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said in this hadith.

“Whoever starts working on good deeds in Islam, then he will get the reward and reward of the person who imitates the act.” (Muslim)

6. Abdullah

Abdullah is the first good name that loves by Allah. Abdullah means Servant of Allah like our Prophet Muhammad Shallaahu Alaihi Wassallam. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is a Servant of Allah that he stood up supplicating Him. Below here is the complete verse of Quran that Abdullah is the good name in Islam, Allah says in the Holy of Quran.

7. Abdurrahman

 The second good name that is Sunnah to given on child, Abdurrahman. Abdurrahman means Merciful Servant of Allah. By giving the name Abdurahman, its hopes that the child will be a good, loving and useful boy for the people around him.

This name has a positive and good meaning. Below the following here is a hadith that Prophets Sallallahu alaihi Wa Sallam gives a child name with Abdurrahman.

“A man among us has a child, then he gives the name” Al Qasim “. So we said, “We will not name you with Abu Al Qasim and we will not glorify him. 8. A name that is loved by Allah Almighty

Indeed, there are two names that Allah Almighty loves it. There are Abdullah and Abdurrahman,  these names really have good meaning and also positive. That is why Allah loves both of these names so much.

In a hadith below here, it tells that Allah really loves of the name of Abdullah and Abdurrahman. The prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said in his hadith.

“Indeed the names that are most loved by Allah are Abdullah and Abdurrahman.” (Muslim)

9. The name of a righteous person

Well, besides both name that explains above. As the parent, you could give a name on your child by the name of a prophet and the righteous person. The most names that parent always gives by the names of prophets are Muhammad like the name of our Rasulullah, Ibrahim, Musa, Ismail, Adam, and other. Then, the name of the righteous persons such as Amr or Anas. Below here there is Prophet Muhammad said this in his hadith.

“Surely they give names (to their children) with the names of the prophets and the people of a righteous person” (HR. Muslim).

10. For a baby girl

Giving names to good girls is the same as giving a boy’s name. You can give it a name like the name of the mother of the prophet Muhammad or a Muslim woman who has an important role in Islam, such as Aisyah.

However, names for baby girls can also be taken from the verses of the Quran, such as Ilmi which means knowledge and cleverness. It is hoped that with this name the child will become smart and knowledgeable.

11. The right time to give a name

When we as the parent should give a name to our child in Islam? One of the right time to give a name on a child is when the baby is born. Below the following is a hadith that tells us about when a baby from a friend of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) born. He brought his baby to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and then he gave the baby a good name, Ibrahim.

“My son was born, then I brought him to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). And then he gave him the name Ibrahim (Abu Musa’s eldest son), he fed him with chewing dates and prayed for them blessedly, after that he gave them to me.” (Bukhari)

12. The 7th day after baby born

There is another Sunnah how the right time to give a name on a child, it is the seventh day of aqiqah. However, some Ulama argues that give a name before the newborn of the baby or after one or two days of the birthday is allowed in Islam. But, it will be better give the name on the 7th day after baby born. Below here is a hadith by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

“Every child is mortgaged with his aqiqah, is cleansed for him on the seventh day, shaves his hair and given a name.” (Abu Dawud, An-Nasai, Ibn Majah, and Ahmad)

13. The exception

When the mother delivered his or her child and the father does not exist, either because of death, runs away (irresponsible), and loss of his mind. So the one who has the right to give the name of the child is his mother.

Besides, there is some role of the woman that you should know, let’s check these ones. Below here is the one of a verse of the Holy Quran that a mother has the right to name a child.

” But when she delivered her, she said, ‘My Lord, I have delivered a female.’ And Allah was most knowing of what she delivered. ‘ And the male is not like the female. 14. Giving the bad name on a child

The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) forbids his people from giving a number of names that are forbidden to children, including foreign names, names of unbelievers, as well as the names of statues that are made worship besides Allah Almighty. In the hadith the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said.

“Actually the name that is most hated by Allah is someone named Malakul Amlak (king of the kingdom)” (Bukhari Muslim)
