17 Importance of Dhikr in Islam

Dhikr is the way we Muslims to remember Allah Almighty. Dhikr is one of the good deeds that can be performed in everywhere and any place. It has the greatest reward among other deeds.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was told us too in his hadith that every Muslims recommended doing this dhikr in after daily prayer. However, what is the importance of dhikr actually? Below here are 17 importance of dhikr in Islam that we must be understood.

  1. The picture of the person doing the dhikr

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) describes a Muslim who performs dhikr is like a live person, while a person who does not dhikr to Allah as a dead person. Below here is the following hadith.

“The parable of those who dhikr of Allah Almighty and those who do not dhikr, is like the one who lives and dies.” (Bukhari)

2. Command of dhikr

In verses of Quran and hadith, there are many verses that instruct us to dhikr. One of them is in this following verse, Allah Almighty says.

” O ye who believe! Remember Allah with much remembrance. And glorify Him early and late. He is Who blesseth you, and His angels (bless you), that He may bring you forth from darkness unto light; and He is ever Merciful to the believers.Their salutation on the day when they shall meet Him will be Peace. And He hath prepared for them a goodly recompense.” (Verse 33:41)

3. It will always be remembered by Allah Almighty

One importance of the first dhikr is any Muslim who diligently perform dhikr then that person will always be remembered by Allah Almighty as like he remembers Allah Almighty in his daily life. Besides, do dhikr in daily it can protect us from the heat of hellfire. Below here Allah Almighty says in Quran.

“Lo! In the creation of the heavens and the earth and (in) the difference of night and day are tokens (of His Sovereignty) for men of understanding. Such as remembering Allah Almighty, standing, sitting, and reclining, and consider the creation of the heavens and the earth, (and say): Our Lord! Thou createdst not this in vain. Glory be to Thee! Preserve us from the doom of Fire.” (Verse 3:190-191)

4. The heart becomes peaceful and serenity

Any believer who believes and performs dhikr then he has serenity and peace of mind. Below here Allah Almighty says in the Quran.

“Who have believed and whose hearts have rest in the remembrance of Allah. Verily in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest!” (Verse 13:28)

5. The holy’s of heart

The calm and peace that comes from doing dhikr will lead to the cleanliness of the heart. With a clean heart, tranquility and happiness in the world and the hereafter was obtained. Here Allah says in the Quran.

“But ah! thou soul at peace! Return unto thy Lord, content in His good pleasure! Enter thou among My bondmen! Enter thou My Garden!” (Verse 89: 27-30)

6. Happiness after death

The importance of dhikr in Islam, when a Muslim diligently practice dhikr and at one time he died. Everything that is of the world will be left behind except one, the practice of dhikr. Where this practice will always be brought to the Hereafter. Allah says in Quran below here.

“Think not of those, who are slain in the way of Allah, as dead. Nay, they are living. With their Lord they have provision. Jubilant (are they) because of that which Allah hath bestowed upon them of His bounty, rejoicing for the sake of those who have not joined them but are left behind: That there shall no fear come upon them neither shall they grieve.” (Verse 3: 169-170)

7. Good deeds are higher than others

Dhikr is a good deed higher than other deeds, here are the words of the Prophet SAW.

“Verily for everything there is washing, and verily the heart is dhikr, and nothing can save from the adzab of Allah Almighty from dhikr.” (Baihaqi)

8. Always overwhelmed by the goodness

Whoever is a Muslim who sits while performing dhikr, undoubtedly the person will get the grace and goodness that flows without stopping. Below is the word of the Messenger of Allah (PBUH).

“There is not a people who sit while dhikr to Allah but they will be surrounded by angels, blanketed by grace and Allah Almighty will remember them in the presence of the creature that is by His side.” (Bukhari)

9. Dhikr is no time limit

Doing dhikr no time limit. Whenever we can do it both in a state of standing, sitting and even lying down. Better if doing dhikr with a soft voice. Allah SWT says in the Quran.

“Say (unto mankind): Cry unto Allah, or cry unto the Beneficent, unto whichsoever cry (it is the same). His are the most beautiful names. And thou (Muhammad), be not loud-voiced in thy worship nor yet silent therein, but follow a way between.” (Verse 17: 110)

10. Dhikr is a garden of heaven

Rasulullah (PBUH) said in one of his hadith, that dhikr is a garden of heaven or called halaqah dhikr. The whole is in the hadith below.From Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) said.

“When you go through the gardens of heaven, then surround him.” Companions asked, “Are the gardens of heaven, O Messenger of Allah?”, He replied, “ie halaqah dhikr, Allah has the armies of the angels, who seek the halaqah dhikr, which when they meet him, they will surround him. “(Ahmad, Tirmidhi, and Baihaqi)

11. The virtue of the dhikr

In doing dhikr, of course, may be done together. The people who gather and perform the dhikr are called ahlul Karam. Here below is the hadith.

“Allah Almighty says on the Day of Resurrection, ‘the assembled people will know who they are that belongs to the ahlul Karam (noble one)’, a Companion asked who is ahlul Karam ya Rasulullah SAW? He replied, “Majlis dhikr in the mosque.” (HR Ahmad)

12. Getting the heaven of Allah SWT

For Muslims who perform dhikr, it is entitled to them to get the forgiveness of sins and heaven from Allah SWT.Below here Allah Almighty says in the Quran.

“Lo! men who surrender unto Allah, and women who surrender, and men who believe and women who believe, and men who obey and women who obey, and men who speak the truth and women who speak the truth, and men who persevere (in righteousness) and women who persevere, and men who are humble and women who are humble, and men who give alms and women who give alms, and men who fast and women who fast, and men who guard their modesty and women who guard (their modesty), and men who remember Allah much and women who remember – Allah hath prepared for them forgiveness and a vast reward.” (Verse 33:35)

13. Luck and victory

Whoever the Muslims who do dhikr, then he will get the luck and the unexpected victory. With the practice of dhikr insha’Allah Allah will bring much sustenance for us, Here Allah says in the Quran.

“O ye who believe! When ye meet an army, hold firm and think of Allah much, that ye may be successful.”

(Verse 8: 45)

14. Protect from misfortune

We never know what will happen to us tomorrow. It could be the day after tomorrow or there will be a disaster. A tragedy is a test and the secret of destiny that Allah has foretold long ago. With this, we must always ask Allah Almighty for protection from misfortune and fate.

“Protect you to Allah from the hardships of the unfortunate, the descent of the misery, the qadha and the enemy’s pleasures over the misfortune that befell you.” (Bukhari)

15. Protected from Satan’s temptations

Lying, stealing, instigating are some of the consequences of the cursed satan’s temptations. Ask Allah Almighty for protection from bad temptations. With doing dhikr we will be protected from the cursed temptations of Satan. Below is the following hadith.

“I seek refuge in the all-hearing, all-knowing Allah Almighty of the cursed Satan, from his madness, his arrogance and his disgraceful verse”  (Abu Dawud and At-Tirmidhi)

16. Saving us from the punishment of Allah

One of the practices that can save Adam’s son from the doom of hellfire is dhikr. The deed of dhikr that we had is only the weapon to saving us from the punishment of Allah Almighty. The following Messenger of Allah said in his hadith.

“The good deed which is done by Adam’s son no one saves him from azab of Allah SWT other than dhikr to Allah SWT.” (Ibn Abu Syaibah and Ath-Thabrani)

17. Failure to do dhikr

What happens if a Muslim fails to do dhikr? The person will lose and in here Allah Almighty will forget them as he forgot Allah Almighty. If we as Muslim forgot to remember Allah Almighty, our life in world and hereafter will be miserable. Below here, Allah says in the Quran.

” O ye who believe! Let not your wealth nor your children distract you from a remembrance of Allah. Those who do so, they are the losers.” (Verse 63:9)

Hopefully, 17 importance of dhikr in Islam is useful for us. Dhikr is the easiest practice among other deeds. But it has a greater reward than the others. For that, it is expected for all believing Muslims that we should always dhikr to Allah so that Allah always remember and protect us from harm or any calamity.
