Leucorrhoea is a phenomenon experienced by women, whereas from the vagina comes a kind of mucus that is actually produced by glands that are inside the vagina itself. This phenomenon is actually a healthy thing because the mucus that comes out in leucorrhoea will come out while carrying dead cells and bacteria to keep the vagina clean.
Its characteristics, namely the mucus that comes out is usually clear, does not cause itching, and does not smell. But, what is the law of leucorrhoea for women in Islam? In conditions of worship, everyone has to be clean. So, we must study this liquid according to Islamic law.
In Islam, it is known that there are three types of fluid that come out through the qubul or the genital such as:
- Mani/Sperm
This wet liquid is normally flavorful like flour dough, and when it dries it smells like eggs. Mani comes out by spitting (feeling pleasure) and has the effect of weakening the testicles. If it comes out, you have to cancel the fast and do a junub bath.
- Madzi (White, Clear, and Sticky Liquid)
This fluid usually comes out when having orgasm or relating between men and women. The difference between this fluid and semen is that madzi does not spur and does not weaken the penis. If it comes out, it does not cancel the fast and is not required to have a junub bath.
- Wadi
This liquid is clear, rather thick, usually comes out when urinating or certain conditions caused by changes in the body’s cycle. Of the three fluids mentioned, the easiest to distinguish is wadi because this fluid only comes out when urinating, both along with the discharge of urine or afterward.

This is explained in the book Al-Majmu ‘Syarhul Muhadzdzab, juz II, pages 141-142:
فمني الرجل في حال صحته ابيض ثحين يتدفق في خروجه دفعة بعد دفعة ويخرج بشهوة ويتلذذ بخروجه ثم إذا خرج يعقبه فتور ورائحته كرائحة طلع النخل قريبة من رائحة العجين وإذا يبس كانت رائحته كرائحة البيض.
Of the three types of liquids mentioned, the last two, namely madzi and wadi, are liquids which are impure, whereas Mani has a sacred law (even though it must take a mandatory bath after leaving) as explained by Imam Shafi’i in the Book of Al-Umm.
It means, “Every urine, madzi, wadi or something unknown or something that is known that comes out of the penis or pubic part of the front then all the laws are unclean except semen.”
Then from the explanation above, what can be categorized as the whitish fluid (ifrazat) and how exactly is the law of vaginal discharge for women in Islam? Actually, there are those who argue that the liquid discharge is included in type 3 or wazi.
However, there are two opinions that are at odds with the scholars in seeing this problem.
The first opinion is that vaginal discharge is unclean.
This is the opinion of Imam Syafii according to one statement, as-Saerozi; the Syafiiyah Islamic scholars, al-Qodhi Abu Ya’la; Hambali madrasah scholars, and several other scholars.
The second opinion is leucorrhoea including a liquid whose status is sacred.
This is the opinion of Hanafiyah, the opinion of imam as-Syafii according to other statements, al-Baghawi, ar-Rafii; Islamic scholars of Syafiiyah, and Ibn Qudamah; Hambali school ulama.
Seeing the two opinions above certainly makes us a little hesitant. Moreover, the two opinions are two different directions which do not support each other. So how do we look at it?

To solve the problem and find out what is the law of leucorrhoea for women in Islam, let us understand the types of vaginal discharge first. Of course, because the vaginal discharge is the liquid that comes out due to bacteria and dead cells inside the vagina, the shape of the liquid that comes out is not constant. There are several factors that cause the shape of the liquid to come out differently.
- Clear
This is the most normal form. There is no itching sensation when it comes out. It does not smell, too.
- Milky White
This type of liquid can also be categorized as normal. From the middle to the end of the monthly cycle, the color of the liquid becomes as white as the cream due to the release of progesterone, usually caused by taking pregnancy pills.
- White/Gray and Stinks
It is caused by the number of bacteria that changes and is not balanced. It is still normal and harmless if it is not lined with itching and irritation.

- White Cream but Slightly Lumpy
A lumpy liquid can indicate a fungal infection in the vagina because of the nature of the fungus which likes a warm and humid environment, usually caused by too often wearing tight clothes so that it triggers the vagina to sweat. The use of antibiotics can also be a trigger because it kills good bacteria in the vagina.
- Brown (Sometimes Containing Blood)
This is usually caused by irregular menstrual cycles. It must be watched out because it has the potential to be an indication of uterine cancer.
- Green, Yellow, and Foaming
This vaginal discharge usually occurs to married women and is caused by active intimate relationships. The cause is the parasite Trichomonas Vaginalis or included in sexually transmitted diseases. Usually, the mucus that comes out a lot smells fishy and it is painful when urinating. Sometimes, it causes swelling and itching in the vaginal area.
- Leucorrhoea Accompanied by Blister Wounds Around the Vagina
This vaginal discharge is herpes, usually causing blisters that feel sore in the genitals.
Based on the seven types above, it can be concluded that the type of leucorrhoea is not only one and there are among those who are indeed caused due to diseases outside the normal cycle.
The law of leucorrhoea for women in Islam is difficult to determine. However, if asked to argue, as if we want to worship and coincide with vaginal discharge, then it is better to purify by cleaning the vaginal discharge first.
Hopefully, the above study can be enlightenment so that we can become better people. InshaAllah.
