“The four attitudes that anyone has in those four attitudes, and then he is a genuine hypocrite. Whoever has one of those attitudes on him, then there is hypocrisy on him until he leaves. That is if he is believed to have betrayed if he speaks he is lying, if he promises he breaks, and if he fights he cheats.” (Sahih Bukhari)
Hypocrisy is almost difficult to recognize because people who are infected with hypocrisy usually try to imitate the actions of believers, he also prays and fasts, but actually, his heart is negligent. “And if he does fasting and prayer, he thinks that he is a Muslim” (Muslim)
A hypocrite usually uses his oral to lie, claiming that he has faith even though he is not, trying to look nice in front of people so that they are fooled by imaging. Even though in the end Allah will fool the hypocrites:
“When they meet believers, they say, ‘We have faith.’ But if they are alone, they say, ‘Indeed we are on your side. It is just that we want to ridicule believers.’ God will make fun of them and abandon them in iniquity, while they are in a state of indecision.” (Quran, 14: 15)

Why do you need to stay away from hypocrites? Hypocrites will not get God’s help. Even the dwelling place of the hypocrites is at the bottom of the hell: “Surely the hypocrites will be thrown into the crust of hell and you will not see them get help.” (QS. An-Nisaa: 145) Therefore, here are 14 ways to avoid the hypocrisy that you can do:
- Prayers in congregation
Especially for men, praying in congregation in the mosque in a timely manner such as carrying out the primacy of the Morning Prayer in the mosque! This will free you from the nifak or hypocrisy. “Whoever performs prayer in the congregation for 40 by obtaining takbiratul ihram, then he will be set free from two things, namely free from hell and free from hypocrisy.” (HR At-Tirmidhi)
How can prayer in congregation spare you from the nature of hypocrisy? Of course, because it is not easy to ensure that you can always get takbiratul ihram which is prayer in a timely manner. The hypocrites used to do good deeds just to be seen by humans that it must be hard for him to truly pray on time.
- Increase Charity
“Alms are proof.” (Muslim). The proof here means proof of faith but with halal money. Always avoid illicit money as in the law of charity with illicit money. Hypocrites are usually reluctant to give alms, except to raise their image or solely for the formation of their good image. So, if you want to distance yourself from hypocrisy, multiply giving charity, both charity and hiding.
- Increasing Remembrance
‘And they did not dhikr, except a little.’ (QS: 3: 142) The hypocrite of his heart is negligent of remembering God because there are virtues of the morning and evening dhikr. Therefore, if you expect the farthest from the nifak nature, you should multiply the remembrance of Allah, both in the midst of the crowd and at the time alone.
- Familiarize Commendable Morals
“There are two traits that will never be combined in the heart of a hypocrite: noble behavior and understanding in religion.” (HR At-Tirmidzi). Good morals and deep understanding of religion cannot be possessed by hypocrites. Then act with good character that is commendable, that is the reason for the importance of noble character according to Islam!
- Get Used to Helping Other People
A simple example might be that you often read in a moral textbook in accordance with the Quranic verse about making people happy, for example, when you see a parent who is going to cross the road, help them cross. When you see pregnant women in a vehicle, give them a seat. When you see women having trouble carrying heavy items, help them bring those items. Even though it looks simple, good morals that are done consistently will keep you from the hypocrisy.
- Prayers at the Beginning of Time
Hurry up to pray if the time has come and try to get the takbiratul ihram prayer at the mosque. This is considering the hadith of Anas bin Malik radhiyallahu ‘anhu, that the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said, “Whoever performs the prayer in the congregation for 40 by obtaining takbiratul ihram, then he will be set free from two things, namely free from hell and free from hypocrisy.” (HR At-Tirmidhi)
- Read A Lot About Religion
Have good character and deepen religion. The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said, “There are two traits that will never be joined in the hearts of hypocrites: noble behavior and understanding in religion.” (HR At-Tirmidhi)
- Steer Clear of Stinginess
Give alms and do not be miserly. The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said, “Alms are proof.” (Muslim). The evidence here means evidence of faith. Therefore, hypocrites do not like doing charity because there is no underlying faith.
Turn on the night prayer. Qatadah is said to have said, “The hypocrite is very little at night.” This is because hypocrites will only be passionate about doing charity if someone witnesses it. If there is nobody around, then there is no motivation for righteous deeds. So, if there is a servant to establish the night prayer, then it becomes proof that there is no nifak in him and is proof of his true faith.
- Jihad in the Way of Allah
Jihad in the way of Allah, Imam Muslim recounts from Abu Musa Al Asy’ari, the Prophet sallalahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said, “Whoever dies in a situation never fights and never lies in him, then he dies on a branch of hypocrisy.” Nawawi explained, “That is, whoever does this, he is considered to have resembled hypocrites who did not carry out jihad.”
- Always Remember God
Increasing remembrance is a way of remembering Allah, Ka’b states, “The person who multiplies dhikr will be detached from the nature of the nifak. “Because hypocrites do little zikr. Allah says about the hypocrites, ‘And they do not recite except a little.’ (Surah: 3: 142) “Some friends have been asked, ‘Is the Khawarij sect hypocritical?’ Then it is answered, ‘No. The hypocrite does little dhikr.’”
- Pray
Prayer of the Prophet Ibrahim ‘alaihis shalatu was sallam,
“Keep me and my child away from worshiping idols. O God, the idol has misled many people.” (Surah Ibrahim: 35-36)
Ask for guidance and taufiq:
The essence of asking for guidance means asking to be given the way of istiqamah above the truth and protected from every kufr and hypocrisy. The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam used to read prayers, “O Allah, I plead with You guidance, devotion, awake honor, and wealth…” (Narrated by Ahmad 3950 and Muslim 7079)
Prayers to avoid kufr and hypocrisy
“O, God, I take refuge in you from infidelity, kufr, wickedness, iniquity, hypocrisy, sum’ah, and riya’.” This prayer is narrated by al Hakim (1944) and al-Albani’s blessing. Protection from shirk, which is realized or not realized, “O God, I take refuge in you. do not let me associate with you while I realize it and I beg for forgiveness for what I did not realize.” This prayer is read by the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam when mentioning the dangers of shirk.
“For the sake of the one whose soul is in His hand, really the shirk is vaguer than the ant’s footprints. Will I show you one prayer, if you say it, then shirk will distance you from the few and the many. Then the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam taught the prayer above.” (Narrated by Bukhari in Adabul Mufrad 716 and Al-Albani)
Prayer of Abu Bakrah radhiyallahu ‘anhu
He diligently reads the following prayer, “O, Allah, I take refuge in You from kufr and fidelity… Allah, I take refuge in You from adzab… Laa ilaaha illaa between…” This reading is repeated 3 times every morning and evening. When he was asked the reason, he said, “I heard the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam pray with this prayer and I want to imitate his sunnah. (Narrated by Abu Daud 5092, Nasai 5482 and acclaimed by al Albani)

- Sincerity for What God gives
As mentioned in the hadith regarding hypocrisy, “If promised, then he denies. When speaking, he lies. If making an agreement, it is not fulfilled. If given a mandate, he betrayed.” This all includes the practice of hypocrisy. Who is accustomed to the nature of the included, he can fall into great hypocrisy.
- Avoid Temptations of Satan
Be careful of the temptations of Satan because Satan continues to order to be careless in worship. Satan whispers, it is not necessary to pray, it is not necessary to worship. Satan also whispers, do not do sunnah prayers, later infected by riya’. Satan whispers this kind of thing and you must ignore it.
