Fasting (especially Ramadan fasting) is the fourth of Islamic pillars. As Moslems, we should do it seriously.
So we can get the blessing of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala. We have to know what things that nullify fasting in Islam. So, our fasting will not be in vain. Here are things that nullify fasting in Islam. Check them out.
- Eat and drink intentionally
Allah Ta’ala has said :
وَكُلُواْ وَاشْرَبُواْ حَتّىَ يَتَبَيّنَ لَكُمُ الْخَيْطُ الأبْيَضُ مِنَ الْخَيْطِ الأسْوَدِ مِنَ الْفَجْرِ ثُمّ أَتِمّواْ الصّيَامَ إِلَى الّليْلِ
“And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread [of night]. Then complete the fast until the sunset.” (Q.S. Al-Baqarah : 187)
From that verse, fasting is holding back from eat and drink. If someone fast and he eat or drink intentionally, its means that he has broke his fasting. But if he forgets, then it does not break his fasting. Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam has said :
“Whoever fast, then he forgets, [so] he eats and drinks, he should prefect his fasting. Indeed Allah Ta’ala has given food and drink to him.” (Narrated by Al-Bukhari number 1933 and Muslim number 1155. This is the lafadz of Muslim)
- Vomit
Deliberately vomit can nullify fasting. It is including to a fly that enter to the mouth of someone, and he tries to get it out.
Or someone vomits because he smells something that he does not like intentionally. So, his fasting is also void.
But if someone vomits accidentally, it is nothing. But he should clean his mouth, if he does not do that, his fasting will be void.
Because he will swallow saliva that has been mixed with vomit and vomit is a najis. The Prophet Muhammad Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said :
“Whoever vomit accidentally when he is fasting, then there is no qadla’ for him; and whoever vomit intentionally, then he must qadla (his fasting).” (Narrated by Abu Dawud number 2380, At-Tirmidzi number 720, Ibn Majah number 1676, and Ahmad 2/498; this is the lafadz of Abu Dawud. See the Shaheeh of Sunan Abu Dawud 2/63)

“She (a woman) is silent for some night, not do prayer, and break Ramadan fasting (because menstruation), then this is the deficiency of her religion.” (Narrated by Muslim 79)
Mu’adzah narrated that
“I have asked to Aisha. I said, “What about a woman who get menstruation, she qadla her fasting but she does not qadla her prayer?”. Aisha answered, “Are you a Haruriyyah (Khawarij)?”. It is based on Al-Qur’an and As-Sunnah. Imam Asy-Syaukani rahimahhullah in the Book of Ad-Darari Mudli’ah (2/22) said, “There is no difference in Ulama that jima’ breaks the fasting, if it happens intentionally.
If it happens because they forgets, some Ulama categorize it (in the law) of people who eat and drink because they forget.”
There is also its kaffarat (ransom). It is explained in the sunnah of Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam from the hadith of Abu Hurairah radliyallaahu ‘anhu :
Someone has come to the Prophet Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam and said, “I have perished, O Rasulullah”. He asked, “What thing that has perished you?”.
[AdSense-C]
He answered, “I have done jima’ in the (daytime) of Ramadan month”. He asked again, “Can you free a servant?”. I answered, “No”. He asked again, “Can you fast two months in a row?”. He answered, “No”. He asked again, “Can you feed the sixty poor?”.
He answered, “No”. That person sat. The the Prophet Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam was brought a bowl of date then he said, “Sadaqah with this date.” He said, “To the people who poorer than us? There is no family who more need than us.” The Prophet Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam laughed until his fangs were visible.
He said, “Take and give it as food for your family.” (Narrated by Al-Bukhari number 1936, Muslim number 1111, At-Tirmidzi number 724 and others; This is the lafadz of Muslim)
- If you has an intention to nullify fasting
If someone has an intention to nullify his fasting intentionally, then his fasting will be void although he has not eaten or drunk. It is based on the word of Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam :
“Everyone will only get something as his intention.” (Narrated by Bukhari number 1, Muslim number 1907 and others)
This is madzhab of Sy-Syafi’i, dhadhir madzhab of Ahmad (bin Hanbal), Abu Tsaur, Dhahiriyyah and Ashhaabur-Ra’yi.

- Madness for a while
If someone is crazy for a while intentionally, then he must change his fasting in the next month after Ramadan.
While if he is really crazy, he should not change his fasting and pay fidyah too.
- Get drunk and pass out
Another things that nullify fasting in Islam is drunk and pass out. If someone is drunk and pass out intentionally, of course it can be void his fasting.
But if he does not do that intentionally and he pass out for a while, then his fasting is not void.
If he pass out for a long time, his fasting is void and he should change it in another day.
