15 Virtues of Sickness in Islam – Manner of the Sick

Every people wish to have a perfect health and avoid sickness. However, it’s impossible to be so since human fall sick quite easily. From a small sickness like heartache to severe sickness that need serious treatments. A Muslim should never see sickness as a disaster, since there are many virtues of sickness in Islam. When a Muslim falls sick, he should show his gratitude because it’s a sign that Allah SWT still care about him.

Here are many of the virtues of sickness:

  1. Teach Patience to Us

Patience is what Muslim should master when he falls sick. Sometimes it’s not easy to find the right treatment and medication for the disease and one must be patient until his health gets restored. All of the efforts that did day by day to cure his sickness are counted as doing a good deed.

  1. Time to Reflect Our Doings

As sickness won’t come without any reasons, when someone falls sick, he start to reflect on his past doing. The sins that he committed in the past, how he treat others, and how he never cared about his body is now resulting as sickness. It’s the best time to start over and change for the better.

  1. A Good Warning from Allah SWT

Indeed, Allah SWT loves all of His servants and He will give warning to whoever may walk too far away from the right path. The warning itself may manifest in many ways, and sickness is one of them. By getting sick, Allah stops us from doing things, like overusing the body for work. So Allah gives us sickness to give it a rest.

  1. Repent from the Sins

When a sick person is crying when he remembers all the sins he committed in the past and repenting from it at the moment, Allah SWT will gladly accept. A sick people has more time to reflect on his life and his doing.

  1. Make Us Grateful to Allah

The fact that Allah SWT still gives sickness to us means He remembers us. It’s something to be grateful for. Take it as a sign that Allah misses us and want us to remember him. If Allah no longer care about us, he will abandon us and will never asks us to remember Him.

“How amazing is the case of the believer; there is good for him in everything, and this is only so for the believer. If he experiences something pleasant, he is thankful, and that is good for him; and if he comes across adversity, he is patient, and that is good for him.” – Muslim

  1. Giving Us Time to Sincerely Worship Allah SWT

Someone who is usually busy and barely has time between his tight schedule is now has many free time to worship Allah sincerely. If we usually in a rush in doing the Dhuhur and Asr prayer because of work, no we may take as much time as we want to get close to Allah SWT and share our concern only to Him.

  1. Way to Erase the Sins

Allah SWT gives sickness to a servants but He also gives a big rewards in return. For every single day someone falls sick, all the minor sins will be erased.

“For any adversity a Muslim suffers, Allah erases some of his sins, even though it may be no more than a thorn pricking him.” – Bukhari

  1. As a Reward at the Day of Resurrection

Sickness that befall upon a human will bring him benefit on the day of resurrection, as narrated by Jabir ibn Abdullah, that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said,

“On the Day of Resurrection, when people who have suffered affliction are given their reward, those who are healthy will wish their skins had been cut to pieces with scissors when they were in the world.” – Tirmidhi

  1. Make Us Become a Better Muslim

Sickness will make someone become a better Muslim. Because it’s the real virutes and benefit of sickness, so that one can cherish more of his health and his body in the future.

“Indeed amazing are the affairs of a believer! They are all for his benefit. If he is granted ease then he is thankful, and this is good for him. And if he is afflicted with a hardship, he perseveres, and this is good for him.” – Muslim

  1. Asking for Forgiveness from Allah

Emphasize the benefits and virtues of sickness in Islam by doing as many good deeds as we can, which Allah will be pleased with. One of them is asking for His forgiveness.

Manners When We are Sick

The arrival of sickness is unpredictable, and it can be anyone, whether he is poor or rich. A real Muslim should take sickness as a form of love from the Almighty Allah. Instead of complaining, a Muslim must show a good manners when he’s sick since there are many virtues of sickness in Islam:

  1. Always be patient during sick, not complaining or being angry to Allah for the sickness.
  2. Have a positive thinking that much goodness will come along with the sickness and that this condition will not last forever.
  3. Supplicating the visitors and pray for their health, tell them to be careful and maintain their health so that they won’t fall sick as well. A supplication from the sick is similar with one from the angels.
  4. Wishing for a speed recovery under a good thoughts that we will indeed gaining a perfect health as long as we have faith in Allah.
  5. Putting the family’s heart at ease by less complaining about the condition. Not just for the sick, but the family of the sick are having a hard time as well.

So those are all the virtues of sickness in Islam that every Muslim should know. Indeed, Allah has many ways to show His love and mercy to all of His servant, so that He won’t befall sickness to anyone unless He has a good intention behind it.
