13 Virtues of Telling The Truth in Islam – Instigation for All Moslem

Ash-shiddiq or truth is doing something according to reality, both saying, attitude or action. In our language, it is called as honesty. Ash-shiddiq has very important position in our lives, both personal, family, society or nation. Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said,

عَلَيْكُمْ بِالصِّدْقِ فَاِنَّ الصِّدْقَ يَهْدِى اِلَى الْبِرِّ وَاِنَّ الْبِرَّ يَهْدِى اِلىَ الْجَنَّةِ

“All of you should be honest, because honesty brings goodness and goodness brings to the Heaven.” (Narrated by Bukhari)

Actually, human love to tell the truth and hate lie. A honest person will be loved by Allah Ta’ala and other human.  Honesty is a behavior of scientists and believers. It also can bring someone to the Heaven. Rasulullah saw also said,

أَرْبَعٌ إِذَا كُنَّ فِيْكَ فَلاَ عَلَيْكَ مِمَّا فَاتَكَ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا: حِفْظُ أَمَانَةٍ وَصِدْقُ حَدِيْثٍ وَحُسْنُ خَلِيْقَةٍ وَعِفَّةُ مِنْ طُمْعَةٍ

“If there are four matters in you, will be not harmful the lost of everything from you in the world, they are keeping trust, right speech, good akhlaq, and clear from greed.” (Narrated by Ahmad)

  1. Get peace of soul

Peace soul is an important modal to reach happiness in this world. When a person can tell the truth in his life, he will get peace of soul. Because lie is a part of sins that can agitate the soul. Rasulullah saw said,

اَلإِثْمُ مَاحَاكَ فِى نَفْسِكَ وَكَرِهْتَ أَنْ يَطَّلِعَ عَلَيْهِ النَّاسَ

“Sin is something that agitate your soul and you do not like if that is known by others.” (Narrated by Ahmad)

  1. Bring to the Heaven

It is narrated by Muslim, where the Prophet Muhammad saw said, “You should be honest! Indeed honest shows to the goodness and a goodness shows to the Heaven. And someone who always tell the truth and keep his honesty until it is written on the side of Allah as Ah-Shiddiq (A honest person).”

  1. Get the blessing of life

This blessing of life is a life that bring advantages in many goodness. For reaching the blessing, a Moslem must do right or tell the truth. Rasulullah saw said,

اَلْبَيِّعَانِ بِالْخِيَارِمَالَمْ يَتَفَرَّقَا، فَإِنْ صَدَقَ الْبَيِّعَانِ وَبَيَّنَا، بُوْرِكَ لَهُمَافِى بَيْعِهِمَا، وَاِنْ كَتَمَا وَكَذَبَا، فَعَسَىاَنْ يَرْبَحَارَبْحَا، وَيَمْحَقَا بَرَكَةَ بَيْعِحِمَا.

“A seller and a buyer have a right to choose their choice as long as they have not separated. If both of them do the truth and explain the reality, their transaction will be blessed. But, if both of them hide the truth and lie, may be they get advantages but they lose the blessing of their transaction.” (Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim)

  1. Be closer to the Prophets

Allah saw said in the Qur’an Surah An-Nisaa’ verse 69, “And whoever obeys Allah and the Messenger – those will be with the ones upon whom Allah has bestowed favor of the prophets, the steadfast affirmers of truth, the martyrs and the righteous. And excellent are those as companions.”

  1. Get Safety

In our prayers, we always ask for the safety of life in the world and the Hereafter. After we pray, our duty is trying to get it. One of that ways is always telling the truth. Although, sometimes truthfulness makes liars unhappy and they try to hurt us. But by telling the truth, it can safe and bring us to the Heaven. Rasulullah saw said,

عَلَيْكُمْ بِالصِّدْقِ فَاِنَّهُ مَعَ الْبِرِّ وَهُمَا فىِ الْجَنَّةِ

“You must tell the truth, because indeed he is with wisdom and both of them is in the Heaven.” (Narrated by Ahmad, Bukhari and Ibn Majah)

  1. Avoid from hypocrisy

We will be sad if we admit as believers, but Allah Subahnahu Wa Ta’ala does not want to admit us. He classifies us into the hypocrite. Because if we do right or truth, we will be avoided from hypocrisy and classified into the hypocrite. This is one characteristic of hypocrisy (lying). Rasulullah saw said,

ءَايَةُ الْمُنَافِقِ ثَلاَثٌ: اِذَا حَدَّثَ كَذَبَ وَاِذَا وَعَدَ أَخْلَفَ وَاِذَائْتُمِنَ خَانَ

“There are three signs of a hypocrite : if he says, he lies, if he promises, he missed, and if he is believed, he betrays.” (Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim)

  1. Be raised his degree

Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said, “Whoever ask to Allah to martyr truthfully, Allah rises him to the level of martyrs.”

  1. Avoid from dangerous

At first, persons who intend and try to tell the truth will feel heavy, but in the end, he will be blessed by Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala as a safety.

“Always act honestly! If you see it, that truth endanger, then ultimately it is a safety.” (Narrated by Ibn Abi Ad Dunya from Manshur bin Mu’tamir)

  1. Be loved others

Every people have a potential to be pleasant people and loved others, if they have many positive sides. Commonly, every people will feel happy if they near with a honest person. Because he will always tell the truth and never lie. So, he can be believed.

In Islam, Every Moslems are commanded to tell the truth. They must not lie, although the fact is bitter. As a hadith from Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam below, “Tell the truth although it is bitter.”(Narrated by Ahmad)

  1. Feel happy

A honest person will never feel loss, although he loses an important thing in this world. Because by telling the truth, he will always get goodness from Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala as calmness and happiness in his heart.

  1. Grow bravery

Bravery is doing what you know, what you want or what you need to do. You will need a big bravery to tell the truth. You will always be difficult to tell the truth, but if you do it, you will get many rewards from Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala.

  1. Get rewards and forgiveness

“Indeed, the Muslim men and Muslim women, the believing men and believing women, the obedient men and obedient women, the truthful men and truthful women, the patient men and patient women, the humble men and humble women ……. for them Allah has prepared forgiveness and a great reward.” (Q.S. Al Ahzab : 35)

  1. Be granted your dua

There is a proverb said that “a honest man must be lucky”. It means that a honest man will always get delight from Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala such as help and his dua will be granted.

“Whoever fears Allah – He will make for him a way out. And will provide for him from where he does not expect. Whoever fears Allah – He will make for him of his matter case.” (Q.S. Ath-Thalaq : 2 – 4)
