Etiquette of Reading The Holy Quran
- Should be sincere and a believer
As Moslem, we should read the holy Qur’an sincerely, straighten our intentionally to get His blessings and becomes believers. By reading Qur’an sincerely, we will be more comfortable and more understand about the contents of Qur’an. As it is sent in the Qur’an Surah Al-Baqarah 282 below
“For if you do so, indeed, it is [grave] disobedience in you. And fear Allah. And Allah teaches you, And Allah is Knowing of all things.”
- Brush your teeth
It is sunnah if your mouth is clean when you want to read Qur’an. By a clean mouth, you will be comfort and confident to read Qur’an, too. Rasulullah saw said,
عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ بْنِ الْيَمَانِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : كَانَ رَسُوْلُ اللهِ إِذَا قَامَ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ يَشُوْسُ فَاهُ بِالسِّوَاكِ
“In the past, if the Prophet woke up at night, then he brushed his mouth with miswak.” (Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim)
- Read in a state of purity (wudu)
Before reading Qur’an, we should have wudu (clean from hadast). Besides that, we are recommended to wear clean clothes, clean our body, and read it in a clean place. For children, it is not an obligation, but we should inform them to take wudu before reading Qur’an. Because it is an etiquette of reading the holy Qur’an.

- Read ta’awudz
If we want to read Qur’an, we should read ta’awudz first. According to Jumhur (the majority of Ulama), the reading of ta’awudz is “a’udzu billahi ,inasy syaithonir rajiim”. The law of reading this ta’awudz is sunnah. The command of reading ta’awudz is mentioned in the verse below :
فَإِذَا قَرَأْتَ الْقُرْآَنَ فَاسْتَعِذْ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ
“So when you recite the Qur’an, [first] seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the expelled [from His mercy].” (Q.S. An-Nahl : 98)

- The position should be right
When you read Qur’an, you should make your position good and right because that is included in etiquette of reading the holy Qur’an. You can read Qur’an while you are sitting, standing, lying and driving. A hadith from Aisha that Rasulullah saw said,
أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَ سَلَّمَ كَانَ يَتَّكِئُ فِي حَجْرِيْ وَ أَنَا حَائِضٌ ثُمَّ يَقْرَأُ القُرْآنَ
“Indeed, the Prophet has lied in my lap when I was menstruation, then he read Qur’an.” (Narrated by Bukhari 297 and Muslim 301)
- Read Qur’an slowly (Tartil)
If you want to read Qur’an, you should choose a calm place and read it slowly (tartil). Because the law of read Qur’an slowly is sunnah and it is makruh if you read it fastly. As it is mentioned in the Qur’an below :
أَوْ زِدْ عَلَيْهِ وَرَتِّلِ الْقُرْآنَ تَرْتِيلًا
“Or add to it, and recite the Qur’an with measured recitation.” (Q.S. Al-Muzzamil : 4) [AdSense-A]
- Make the reading of Qur’an good
It is sunnah to make the reading of Qur’an good and it is forbidden to read it with lilting. As the Prophet Muhammad saw said,
زَيِّنُوا الْقُرْآنَ بِأَصْوَاتِكُمْ
“Adorn your voice in reciting Qur’an.” (Narrated by Abu Dawud number 1468, Ibn Majah number 1342, An-Nasa-I number 1015, Ahmad number 18494, ad-Darimi number 3543, Shohih, see the Liniage of Ahaadits as-Shohihah number 771)
If we heard its reading, we should listen it well and khusyu’. This thing is based on the word of Allah SWT in Surah Al-A’raf verse 204, which reads :
وَإِذَا قُرِئَ الْقُرْآنُ فَاسْتَمِعُوا لَهُ وَأَنْصِتُوا لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ
“So when the Qur’an is recited, then listen to it and pay attention that you may receive mercy.” (Q.S. Al-A’raf : 204)
- Do not cut the reading
We are recommended to connect the reading of Qur’an and do not cut it (at random). A tabiin Nafi’ narrated,
“That Ibn Umar if he recited Qur’an, then he did not talk until he finished from it…” (Narrated by Bukhari)
So that, if we stop in the middle of Surah and we want to continue the reading, we should start it from the verse that relate wiht that thing. Imam An Nawawi said,
“It is sunnah for those who read Qur’an, if he starts from the middle of surah, then he starts from the first Qalam where one and others are still related.”
- Reflect the verse of Qur’an
When we read Qur’an, we should be in a state of khusyu’ and we have to try to reflect (tadabbur) on every verse that you are read. As it is mentioned in the Qur’an below
أَفَلَا يَتَدَبَّرُونَ الْقُرْآَنَ أَمْ عَلَى قُلُوبٍ أَقْفَالُهَا
“Then do they not reflect upon the Qur’an or are there locks upon [their] hearts?” (Q.S. Muhammad : 24)
كِتَابٌ أَنْزَلْنَاهُ إِلَيْكَ مُبَارَكٌ لِيَدَّبَّرُوا آَيَاتِهِ وَلِيَتَذَكَّرَ أُولُو الْأَلْبَابِ
“[This is] a blessed Book which We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], that they might reflect upon its verses and that those of understanding would be reminded.” (Q.S. Sad : 29)
أَفَلَا يَتَدَبَّرُونَ الْقُرْآنَ ۚ وَلَوْ كَانَ مِنْ عِنْدِ غَيْرِ اللَّهِ لَوَجَدُوا فِيهِ اخْتِلَافًا كَثِيرًا
“Then do they not reflect upon the Qur’an? If it had been from [any] other than Allah, they would have found within it much contradiction.” (Q.S. An-Nisa : 82)
- Remember or murojaah Qur’an
There is an advice to remember Qur’an and take care it. Its means that repeating your memory of Qur’an. Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said,
تَعَاهَدُوا الْقُرْآنَ، فَوَالَّذِيْ نَفْسُ مُحَمَّدٍ بِيَدِهِ لَهُوَ أَشَدُّ تَفَلُّتًا مِنَ اْلإِبِلِ فِي عُقُلِهَا
“Take care Qur’an (by repeating his memory) for the sake of the Essence that my soul in His hand, indeed (memory) Qur’an is easier than the camel in its bond.” (Narrated by Bukhari)

- Stop if you are sleepy
If you have been sleepy, you should stop your reciting Qur’an because it is sunnah and Rasulullah saw said :
“If one of you wake up at night, then your verbal feels difficult to read Qur’an until you do not realize what you are reading, then you should lie (sleep)”. (Narrated by Muslim)
In the past, the companions were very diligent to memorized, murojaah and read Qur’an. They always adorned their days with reading Qur’an. But, if they were sleepy, they stopped their reading.
