We sometimes forget the importance of respecting our parents, especially our mothers. Allah once mentioned that respecting parents, especially mothers, is the part of devoutness. It is because mothers has endured the pain of child bearing. The importance of respecting parents once mentioned in the Quran.
“Now (among the best of the deeds which) We have enjoined upon man is goodness towards his parents. In pain did his mother bear him, and in pain did she give him birth; and her bearing him and his utter dependence on her took thirty months. And so, when he attains to full maturity and reaches forty years, he (that is righteous) prays:
“O my Sustainer! Inspire me so that I may forever be grateful for those blessings of Thine with which Thou hast graced me and my parents, and that I may do what is right (in a manner) that will meet with Thy goodly acceptance; and grant me righteousness in my offspring (as well). Verily, unto Thee have I turned in repentance: for, verily, I am of those who have surrendered themselves unto Thee!” (Quran, 46:15).
In the following ayah, it is also told that respecting parents could lead us into Allah’s paradise, since it is actually a kind of good initiative human could do. The ayah below told:
“It is (such as) these from whom We shall accept the best that they ever did, and whose bad deeds We shall overlook: (they will find themselves) among those who are destined for paradise, in fulfilment of the true promise which they were given (in this world).” (Quran, 46:16)
Realizing the importance of this matter, I think we need to know some ways on how to make mothers happy in Islam as a part of our devoutness of Allah. It is good to implement the teaching of Islam, isn’t?
- Speak to our mothers with manners
The obedience towards parents is rank the second after the obedience towards Allah. We should speak to our mothers with manners. We should not yell and speak with normal voice. Quran once mentioned regarding to this matter.
أَحَدُهُمَا أَوْ كِلاَهُمَا فَلاَ تَقُل لَّهُمَا أُفٍّ وَلاَ تَنْهَرْهُمَا وَقُل لَّهُمَا قَوْلاً كَرِيمًا
[AdSense-B]
“And your Lord has commanded that you shall not serve (any) but Him, and do good to your parents. If either or both of them reach old age with you, say not to them (so much as) “ugh” nor chide them, but (always) speak to them reverent speech.” (Quran, 17:23)
- Pray for you mothers
Praying for our parents is good because we can show our gratitude to God, that they were able to bear and raise us as children. We can recite the prayers everyday after having compulsory prayers.
وَاخْفِضْ لَهُمَا جَنَاحَ الذُّلِّ مِنَ الرَّحْمَةِ وَقُل رَّبِّ ارْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيَانِي صَغِيرًا
“And make yourself submissively gentle to them with compassion, and say: “O my Lord! have compassion on them, as they brought me up (when I was) a child.” (Quran, 17:24)
- Take care of our mothers
We should provide special care towards our mothers. Why should we treat them more special? It is because they have greater sacrifices and favors more than what our fathers have done. Therefore, it is need to put special treatment more to our mothers.
“And We have commanded unto man kindness towards parents. His mother beareth him with suffering, bringeth him forth with suffering, bearing of him and weaning of him is thirty months.” (Quran, 46:15)
[AdSense-A]
- Show good attitudes towards friends of mothers
We should show great respects to friends of our mothers within our attitudes. We should get close to them, seek advice and opinion to them, just like having the same kind of thing towards our parents.
Furthermore, the hadith below explained why we need to show good attitudes towards friends of our mothers.
“Abu Barda once relates: “When I arrived in Medina, ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar paid me a visit and said : “Abu Barda , do you know why I have come to see you?” I replied :
“No, I have no idea why you have come here.”
Thereupon ‘Abdullah ibn “Umar said:
“I have heard the Prophet of God (peace and blessing of Allah be upon him) as affirming: “The man who wishes to render good service to his father, who is in the grave, ought to show good treatment to his father’s companions and friends.”
Having related this saying of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessing of Allah be upon him)
‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar remarked:
“Brother, my father “Umar and your father were on terms of deep friendship. I wish to commemorate this friendship and fulfil its duties.”” (Ibn Hibban)
- Serve our mothers faithfully even though they are non muslims
We should serve our mothers faithfully even though they are non muslims. It is really important to respect our mothers since they have endured so much pain and sacrifice. We should not keep being obedient. But if they asked us to commit sinful deeds, we can refuse them since it is told in the Quran.
“And if your (parents) pressure you to associate someone with Me of which youhave no knowledge, obey them not, yet continue to treat them well in the world.” (Quran, 31:15)
- Be faithful and kind to mothers
We should be faithful and kind to our mothers. Our mothers could be our close friends, to whom we seek advice. Therefore, it is good to maintain our manners in the most faithful and kindest way we could achieve. It is nice to be faithful and kind to mothers, since they are the closest person we could easily count on to.
Mothers are honest and they even won’t betray us like friends out there. That’s why we need to be faithful and kind to them.
“And lower unto them the wing of submission through mercy.” (Quran, 17:23)
- Share our earnings to them
Our parents, either father or mother, have spent so much time, energy, and money to raise us. Therefore, it is important to payback them, not in a literal way, but we can give them some of our earnings when we have became financially independent. It is good to help them, and also good to show our gratitude of having them. Quran once mentioned:
“They ask thee, what they shall spend. Say what ye spend for good mast go to parents.” (Quran, 2:215)
- Start doing dua sincerely for them
Another way on how to make our mothers happy in Islam is by doing dua sincerely for them. Dua is a sunnah prayer that is good to our welfare. We should know that our parents always spend so much time praying for our success. Therefore, we also should replicate the same favors to them. We can pray for the well being, the forgiveness from Allah, and don’t forget regarding to our gratitude towards Allah for destining them as our parents.
