14 Importance of Obedience in Islam

Based on language, obey is accepting, following or doing a command. While based on terminology, obey is accepting and doing all commands of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala and leaving His prohibitions. As human, we have to obey to Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala. So that, we can get His blessings in our lives.

The obedience of someone depends on how big his faith is in his heart. The command of obedience is also explained inSurah An-Nisa verse 59, which reads :

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا أَطِيعُوا اللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُوا الرَّسُولَ وَأُولِي الْأَمْرِ مِنْكُمْ ۖ فَإِنْ تَنَازَعْتُمْ فِي شَيْءٍ فَرُدُّوهُ إِلَى اللَّهِ وَالرَّسُولِ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ تُؤْمِنُونَ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ خَيْرٌ وَأَحْسَنُ تَأْوِيلًا

“O you who have believed, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you. And if you disagree over anything, refer it to Allah and the Messenger, if you should believe in Allah and the Last Day. That is the best [way] and best in result.” (Q.S. An-Nisa : 59)

In Islam, there are three meaning of obedience to Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala, they are

  1. Obey is compliant

Obey can be meant as doing all commands of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala and leaving all of His prohibitions. His commands like doing prayers, fasting, zakat and many more. While His prohibitions such as committing adultery, gambling, lying, talking others and many more. If we do His prohibitions, of course, we will get sins and we will be hated by Allah SWT.   1. Obey is meek

Obey is following all commands of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala based on Shari’a.For example, when we do prayers, we have to do it as the rules of prayer. We have not to do it as we will, such as closing our awra, doing the pillar of prayer orderly, and others.

  1. Obey is bow

Bow to Qada and Qadar that come from Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala. Obey to Allah is meant that human only worship to Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala.

Importance of Obedience in Islam

  1. As the field of worships

“And obey Allah and obey the Messenger; but if you turn away – then upon Our Messenger is only [the duty of] clear notification.” (Q.S. At Taghabun : 12).

By obeying Allah SWT and His Messenger, we can know what good things or bad things for our lives. So, if we always obey to Allah Subahnahu Wa Ta’ala, we must get many rewards from Him.

  1. A communication facility to Allah SWT

By obeying Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala, we know what things are Allah’s commands and His prohibitions. When we are sad, happy or others, we must remember Him and pray to Him. So, we will be His servant who always remember Him.

  1. Avoid from vanity

“O you who have believed, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and do not invalidate your deeds.” (Q.S. Muhammad : 33).

Allah SWT has arranged the way of our lives through Shari’a. By obeying Him, our lives will be not useless because everything that we do are worships, so our deeds will be kept well or maybe they will be added.

  1. Know Ourselves

Allah’s teaching is looked like a form of restraint, indeed it is a way for human to know more their selves. The obedience to Allah SWT will help human to measure their qualities. By knowing good or bad potentials in ourselves, we will know more ourselves. So, we know what we must do or not.

  1. Humble

The more obedient to Allah is the larger our humble as human. The Greatness of Allah SWT will grow humility among fellows. Allah SWT also always forgives the sins of human, He can be an example for human to forgive each other. So, human will create peace in this world.

  1. Love each others

Human who obey to Allah SWT will apply His teachings in their lives. Human will be happy to help others and protect those who are weak. The obedience to Allah SWT will be looked from our behavior to others.

  1. Optimists

People who always obey to Allah SWT will be always optimistic, because they consider that Allah SWT gives a way for human who always do goodness. They always believe that Allah SWT arranges their rizq and their fates. But of course, they have to try and pray. Optimists will help them to actualize their hopes.

  1. Close to the environment

The environment is also the creation of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala. So that, we have to keep the environment. Keeping the environment is as same as saving the life of all His creations who take benefits in the earth.

  1. Benefit of peace

Allah SWT hates enmity or conflicts. Because of that, if human obey to Allah SWT, then he can avoid his self from conflicts among fellows. See also How to be peaceful in Islam.

  1. Relation with other creatures

There is a very touching story from the past. A whore who entered heaven because she helped a dog that thirsty. Animal is living beings and it is also a creation of Allah SWT. So, Allah SWT loves people who love His creations.

  1. Enjoy gratitude

Allah SWT is always humble with His servants who always obey, follow His commands and avoid His prohibitions. If human is tested by treasures, then he has to spend his treasures in the right way, such as caring the poor and orphans. By this way, human will learn to thank of his rizq and he will be more caring with others.

  1. Respect

Allah SWT hates children who do not appreciate and respect their parents. Allah SWT commands that every kids must obey and listen their parents because their parents has raised their children from baby to adult. This command makes human more sensitive with the difficultness of their parents. So, they will do good deeds to help their parents.

  1. There is no slander

Allah SWT forbids people to talk the badness of others. A hadith narrated that those who happy to gossip is as same as they eat their corpse. From this prohibition, human is hoped to avoid this bad deed because gossip does not bring benefit for others.

  1. Inner peace

Allah SWT compares if slander is more cruel than murder. Obeying Allah’s command will save yourself from a dangerous slander.
