It is true where there is a proverb that mentioned about The Tongue is sharper than a sword. It is remarkable that Allah SWT has given us a gift to speak amongst His other creatures. Unfortunately, there are many of us are not proficient in keeping the words.
We are highly recommended to maintain our words because it can lead us fall in the hell. When we are doubtful about something in certainly, we are advisable to keep silence in order not to hurt the others feelings even it is only silly words. The reason is because all of our spoken will be counted hereafter when the doomsday come.
Allah SWT commandment,”
There is not a word being spoken except there is a guardian angel around him.” (QS. Qaf:18)
“Do not take a part of something you do not know about it. Indeed, hearing, sight and heart, all of it will be counted.” (QS. Al-Isra:36)

Rasullulah shallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam is already remaining to all mankind to speak less except to something which is considered important and useful to remember Allah SWT.
“You shall not talk more except dhizkr to Allah SWT; Indeed, talking more rather than dhizkr to Allah SWT can cause of heart-hearted, and those who are away from their heart is one who has heart-hearted.” (HR. Tirmidzi)
“Those who are faithfully to Allah SWT at the doomsday, he may speaks or silence.” (HR. Bukhari and Muslim)
Imam Al-Syafi’I explained,
” When someone is willing to talk, he shall think first. When the matter is explicit, he may speak. If it is not, he is advisable to keep silence until he can view it clearly.”
Here are some virtues of keeping our words in Islam;
- Has a high position as a Muslim
By keeping our words, we can avoid from sinful words and has a high position in Allah SWT sight. One day, Rasulullah SAW being asked,
“Who is the prime Muslim?” He answered,” He is the one who can keep his words and hands from the devil into others.” (HR. Bukhari)
2. Be grant for heaven
Allah SWT is giving a grant to all his ummat for keeping his words. Sahl bin Sa’ad RA narrated that Rasulullah SAW said,
“Those who can guarantee about his goodness among both of his jowl – mouth and tongue – among his foot – his genital, then I shall grant a heaven for him.” (HR. Al-Bukhari)
3. Avoid from the Hell of Jahannam
It is advisable to keep in silence in a matter which we are not mastering on it. The wrong or bad sentences can cause someone falling to hell because he does not know the benefit about the words he has spoken. Rasulullah SAW said,
”It is truly, when someone talk with a word that Allah SWT hates so much without realizing the effect of his words, he is certainly will fall to the hell of Jahannam.” (HR. Al-Bukhari)

4. Avoid from destruction
Rasulullah SAW explained that that someone who are not keeping his words then he will vanish in the doomsday, in fact; his face will fall headfirst into hell. Rasulullah SAW was talking to Mu’adz bin Jabal Radhiyallahu’anhu,
” Should I inform you the key of all the matters?” I said,” Dear Rasulullah SAW, please, will we be accused (tortured) from all our words?” He answered,” You are unlucky. Will someone fall his headfirst into Jahannam aside from his spoken?” (HR. Tirmidzi)
5. Increase our godly to Allah SWT
Someone who does not like to speak useless is usually will spend most of his time to think. Here means that he is preferred to get closer to Allah SWT by remembering the abundant bounties and the death so that his godly to Allah SWT will increase unconsciously.
Keeping our words is considered as good deeds that can increase the level of his faithful to Allah SWT. It is narrated from Abu Huraira RA that Rasulullah SAW said,
“Those who are godly to Allah SWT in the doomsday, he shall speak the good or silence.” (HR. Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

6. Giving charities that bring rewards
Good deeds is not limited avoiding the sinful words or silence but also delivering the good attitudes. When someone utterance beneficial words likewise the Al-Qur’an verse or preach in a community to deliver the message as it is stated in the Al-Qur’an, he will get rewards because his action is considered as alms. Rasulullah SAW said,
“Convey from me even it is only a verse.” (HR. Bukhari)
Another hadidh mentioned that Rasulullah SAW said,
“Those who are indicate the good deeds, he shall get rewards as if as the one who is performed it.” (HR. Muslim No. 1893)
7. Avoid the character of persistent
Commonly, when someone does many talks in everything including the sinful sentences, means that his heart is full of resentful. It is the reason we are recommended to keeping our words so that we can avoid from the nature of persistent.
Instead, those who are seen as persistent will not easily accept some advices even when he heard some of Allah SWT commandment (Al-Qur’an) his heart will not stirred. Naudzubillah mindzalik.
Ibnu Umar RA said that Rasulullah SAW mentioned,
“You shall not talk more except dhizkr to Allah SWT; Indeed, talking more rather than dhizkr to Allah SWT can cause of heart-hearted, and those who are away from their heart is one who has heart-hearted.” (HR. Tirmidzi)
8. Save one self from sin
Prayer, fasting, reading Al-Qur’an are some of the other ways to save ourselves from the grave of the doom aside of keeping our words. In spite of gossiping or useless talking, it would be better for us to propagate istighfar to Allah SWT.
‘Ugbah bin ‘Aamir said, “I asked to Rasullullah SAW what the cause of salvation is?” He answered, “Mastering your tongue and your house will shall wider and weeping up your mistakes.” (HR. Tirmidzi)
9. Lifted level up by Allah SWT
Allah SWT will enhance someone’s level of his faithful to Allah SWT and blessed him more due to he is prefer to dhizkr and say of ashma Allah Ta’ala. Allah SW T is also grants his ummat to lifted his level up by the condition he can maintain his words. It is narrated from Abu Hurairah RA that Rasulullah SW said,
“Indeed, someone who speaks with one sentence which is blessed by Allah SWT and it is no value inside of it, then Allah SWT will lifted up his level up.” (HR. Al-Bukhari)
10. Get blessed from Allah SWT in the doomsday
Keeping our words can make us get blessed from Allah SWT at the doomsday and Insya Allah we will be placed in Heaven. Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wassalam said,
“Actually, when someone speaks which a sentence be blessed from Allah SWT and he does not notice it (qada’ Allah), then Allah SWT records his blessed and grant him to meet Allah SWT.” (HR. At-Tirmidzi, Ibnu Majah, Al-Imam Malik and Ahmad)
11. Get benefit at the doomsday
It is justified that Allah SWT will give grant for someone who can keeping his words from the bad and avoid him from the devil. In fact, he will also get rewards by lifting his level up and also get blessed from Allah SWT more. It is narrated from Khlaid Abi ‘Imran that Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam said and keeping His words in a quite long,
“ May Allah SWT be blessed someone who is told the truth and he shall get a big reward or silence from the bad then he will survive.” (HR. Ibnu Al Mubarak)
12. Keeping words likewise a gold
Someone is better to think first before he speaks. It means that that he should be careful with his words before he is utterance it to others or choose to be silence. Silence is not a foolish action; in fact, it is a better action for a muslim to do it when he think speaks is useless. Moreover, Luqman Al Hakim is mentioned that silence is golden.
The testament of Lukman Al Hakim to his son,
” Dear Son, there is no regretting in my silence. Indeed, it is likewise silver when I spoken and silence is golden.”
In summary, human is better to talk for good and useful things. We are advisable not to say something that will hurt other people feeling, insulting or smarter than the others, arrogant even tell lies.
When we are not able to speak good or doubtful for something, silence is the best answer. However, we should also see the situation to place our silence in the right time and the right moment.
