20 Importance of Time in Islam You Must Know

There is a famous saying about “Time is Money”, “Time is Gold”, and “Time is Life”. In any religion, any knowledge, any place in the world, there is nothing more precious than the time. We can regain everything we lost, except time. Once it passes, there will no way for it to come back again. Islam urge it believer not to waste time and make the most out of it. Because time is more precious than any other things. Islam has certain guides to teach mankind about the importance of time and how to value it.

The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) himself always say about how to value time and to waste it. Every time passes should be use wisely to increase our faith to Allah SWT and to attain success both in the world and in the Hereafter.

1. Ensure the benefits of time

Life in the world is only temporary, once mankind died, he lost everything including his time in the world. During the time we life we should use it wisely to do a lot of good deeds that will bring us to Jannah in the afterlife. Every time we have should be used to satisfy Allah SWT. Never abusing time or waste it if we want success to be in our side.

Ibn Abbas narrated Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said, “There are two blessings which many people loose: (They are) health and free time for doing good.” – Bukhari

And if we ever abusing and wasting our time, Allah SWT would be highly displease of it. Allah wants us spend our time worship Him, as clearly said in the Holy Quran

“I have only created Jinns and Men, that they may serve Me. No Sustenance do that they should feed Me. For Allah is He Who gives (all) Sustenance, Lord of Power, Steadfast (for ever).” – Adh Dhariyat (51:56-58)

2. Utilize the leisure of time

Islam emphasizing the importance of time by encourages all Muslim to use it wisely and to benefited the most of it. Every Muslim would be asked for responsibility of how we spent our time in the world during our life. Besides of time, there are three things that would asked to every mankind on the Day of Judgement: how we spent our lives, how we spent our wealth, and how we spent our knowledge.

Prophet Muhammad (SAW) told every Muslim to do good deeds in every time we possess. Allah gives the leisure of time only for us to only remember Him.

As narrated by Adullah bin Mas’ud, the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said, “A man shall be asked concerning five things on the day of resurrection: concerning his life, how he spent it; concerning his youth, how he grew old; concerning his wealth, whence he acquired it, and in what way he spent it; and what was it that he did with the knowledge that he had.” – Tirmidhi

3. Obstacle may come at any time

Every Muslim should use the time to race for good deeds, because we never know when the obstacle would come and we are unable to do good deeds anymore.

Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said, “Lose no time to do good deeds before you are caught up by one of seven calamities awaiting you: a starvation which may impair your wisdom; a prosperity which may mislead you; an ailment which may damage your health; an old age which may harm your senses; a sudden death; the Dajjal (Antichrist); or Doomsday, which is indeed the hardest and most bitter.” – Tirmidhi & Baihaqi

4. Mankind would be at loss because of time

We should make the most of the time we have to worship Allah SWT, and doing everything under the guide of Sunnah & Quran only to please Him. Obeying Allah SWT will benefited us a lot, as we get closer to His mercy.

“O ye who believe! Obey Allah, and obey the messenger, and make not vain your deeds!” – Muhammad (47:33)

5. Superiority of times

When the Day of Judgement come, every mankind would be questioned of how we used Allah’s given privilege during our lives.

Take advantage of five matters before five other matters: your youth before you become old; your health, before you fall sick; your wealth, before you become poor; your free time before you become preoccupied, and your life, before your death.” (Narrated by Ibn Abbas in the Mustadrak of Hakim & Musnad Imam Ahmad)

6. Our time is running out

Actually, our time in the world is very limited and soon we would running out of it. Time passed by as fast as the flash of light, and every time passes brings us closer to death. Act before its too late. In time, all beings in the world would be disappear.

“All that on earth will perish.” – Ar Rahman (55:26)

7. Time is blessing from Allah

We have to spend our time to do good deeds and only worshiping Allah because the time we have is solely a blessing from Him. To be grateful to that blessing, we should not disobey Him.

“If you are grateful, I shall certainly give you increase.” – Ibrahim (14:7)

8. Time is the key of success

Allah has promised Muslim all the good things if they spend their time wisely only to worship Allah. If a Muslim is grateful of the time he has and think of it as a blessing from Allah, success awaits for him both in life and Hereafter.

“By Al-’Asr (the time). Verily, man is in loss. Except those who believe and do righteous good deeds, and recommend one another to the truth and recommend one another to patience.” – Al Asr (103:1-3)

9. Wise person use their time wisely

Only if mankind know how precious the value of time is, they will do all the can to make priority of fulfilling the religious obligations only to please Allah. Other than cursing time because of the bad luck happened, consider your time as the biggest blessing from Allah.

As the Prophet (SAW) said, “Do not curse time (al-dahr), for God is the one who crafted time. ” – Muslim

10. Life is only temporary

There is a good reason of why we shouldn’t waste our time. The time we live in the world is only temporary and we do not know when will it stop. As life is temporary, every Muslim should be conscious of it.

11. Time will never return

Yesterday can never be tomorrow and what happened yesterday can’t be fixed tomorrow. As time passed, it will never return again. We will never get back the time we have lost. Wasting a moment means we let an opportunity gone, and we don’t know what goods may come from it.

12. We are judged by how we used our time

The time we lived in the world are judged not by how long we have lived but how we spent our time when we lived. As Allah said, “And on the Day when He shall gather (resurrect) them together, (it will be) as if they had not stayed (in the life of this world and graves, etc) but an hour of a day.” – Yunus (10:45)

They who waste the time would feel cheated because the time passed without them doing goods.
Once it gone, we can’t regain the time back nor fixed the wrongdoing.
We can never make up of time we wasted unless by doing good deeds.
When a person died, he would beg Allah to extend his life in order to do more good deeds.
Allah gives us time to life only to do good deeds to please Him

So those are the importance of time in Islam every Muslim should know. Time is very precious because it’s the only thing that we can never regain once it lost. Let us spend our time in the world wisely under the remembrance of Allah only.
