Law of Cutting Hair While Fasting in Islam

Fasting is one of the commandments from Allah and is the obligation of Muslims especially in performing Ramadan fasting. In conducting this fasting, of course there are rules and laws that apply as Islam governs the whole of human life.

And of course, these rules and laws are based on Al-Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Apostle. Unregulated and prohibited of course does not mean it should not be. Everything is back to the rules given by Allah SWT. Also read : law of hand shake in Islam

Fasting is part of the pillars of Islam, and there is a hadith which states that

“Islam is founded on five pillars, that is, the faithless creed that haq besides Allah and Muhammad is the apostle of Allah, establishing prayers, performing charity, fasting Ramadan and performing hajj to Baitul Haram.” (Narrated by Muttafaq ‘Alaih)

For fasting on the Ramadan fasting is included in the pillars of Islam, must be in accordance with the pillars of Ramadan fasting. Since in Islam of course there is a requirement of Ramadhan fasting. While when canceled or not fasting it is mandatory to replace it soon with the intention of Ramadhan fasting and the intention to break the fast. Also read : prayer for those who hate you

The Law of Cutting Hair While Fasting

In the hadith, there are no rules or restrictions related to cutting hair while fasting. Doing a haircut while fasting is not prohibited, moreover breaking the fasting itself. Cutting hair is not included in things that break the fast. Because cutting hair is not part of eating, drinking, sex, or impulse. Precisely Islam, telling humans to maintain tidiness and cleanliness.

Therefore for us who want to cut hair while fasting, then there is no matter at all and it’s okay to cut it. Since this does not affect our fasting. Also read : virtue of night lailatul Qadr

“A person who are fasting abandons their lust, eats and drinks.” (Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim)

Another matter that does not breaking fast is as follow :

1. Gulped

While fasting, it does not matter if you swallow your own saliva. This is because saliva is a mechanism and natural that is usually done by our body. For that reason, it is impossible to resist not to swallow. Because it is a natural mechanism that occurs. Precisely when arrested and not done, it will affect the digestive system and also the mechanism of our own body.

This is also be delivered  by Asy-Shaykh Ibn Baz Rahimahullah,

“It is okay to swallow and I do not see any clash of scholars in this case, since it is impossible for humans to be avoided and would be very burdensome, is not it? But for the sputum it is obligatory to be spit out when it is in the oral cavity and not for the person fasting to swallow it because it is possible to do and not same as the saliva.”

2. Injected or Infused

The scholars opinion and the jurists stated that injection does not break the fast while the infusion can break it. This is because injections are not included in foods and beverages while infusions are included in foods and beverages. For that, if infused then it will included as an event that break fasting.

Different from dripping medicine into the eyes and ears. This will not break fasting because it is not a channel that goes into the throat. Not even included into the food and drink that quench your thirst. Also read : law of using braces in Islam

3. Showering water from head to toe

This certainly does not break the fast because showering water into the body is not drunk or get into the throat. Meanwhile, to breaking the fast the water must be entered into the throat or be drunk. Otherwise, it will not break fasting.

Things That Break the Fast

When fasting, there are some things that can break fast. This does not include of cutting hair. For that, it should be understood that cutting hair, nails, shaving mustache, or other hairs do not affect our fasting to be break or not.

1. Eat and drinks

Eating and drinking is the obvious thing that breaking the fast. For that, we should not include any type of food and drink, is a matter of breaking the fast. Also read : virtues of last 10 days of Ramadhan

2. Sexual relations

“It has been made permissible for you the night preceding fasting to go to your wives (for sexual relations). They are clothing for you and you are clothing for them. Allah knows that you used to deceive yourselves, so He accepted your repentance and forgave you. So now, have relations with them and seek that which Allah has decreed for you. And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread (of night). Then complete the fast until the sunset.

[AdSense-C]

And do not have relations with them as long as you are staying for worship in the mosques. These are the limits (set by) Allah, so do not approach them. Thus does Allah make cleas His ordinances to the people that they may become righteous.” (QS. Al-Baqarah : 187)

While fasting a legal husband and wife are prohibited to do sexual relationship. But Allah gives the relief by allowing it to be done after fasting at night. In the evening of course is not fasting and the fast already broken off. Of course the rules of Allah such this do not incriminate people actually even lightened them.

It is precisely that Allah has given a relief that mankind can remain obedient to the rules of Him but not precisely curb the human nature. To that end, Allah gives the relief so that people can still feel happiness without violating the command of Allah SWT.

3. Emitting Madzi or Mani (Semen)

“If a person forces out mani in any way either by hand, rubbing it to the ground or by any other means, until the mani exits, then the fasting is nullified.”

This is also agreed upon by the clerics of other mahdzab’s scholars.

A person who secretes semen or madzi is forbidden or breaks his fast if done intentionally. So it is forbidden to stimulate ourselves with something that can give birth to it. Unless done by accident or like a wet dream that can not be controlled by his consciousness.

4. The secretion of menstrual blood or nifas

When menstruation or nifas then women are not obliged to fast. Women are forbidden to fast because of the person’s condition who is experiencing bleeding. For that, when women haidh (in period), they can perform worship other than fasting. Such as dhikr, alms, and so forth.

Those are the things that can break fasting. Apart from Ramadan fasting there is also sunnah fasting that has a virtue such as: sunna fasting of Eid al-Adha in Islam, sunna fasting of 1 Muharram, and the virtue of fasting in month of Shawwal. Of course, in fasting there is a wisdom of sunnah fasting according to Islam.
