Law of Saying Bad Swear in Islam According to Quran and Hadith

If we learn about our beloved religion deeper, we’ll find that there are certain rules and law created to protect the purity of Muslims. Every moral filth is prohibited, including saying bad swear and using foul language.

Rude words that are actually improper and unpleasant to hear are very common among people. Especially when we are talking to a close friends, we don’t mind to use bad language as it shows how close we are. But how is the law of saying bad swear in Islam?

First of all, Islam is perfect. Muslims are not. Although using foul language is not allowed in Islam, many Muslims still do it. Some of our fellow Muslims may have not understand, so here are the explanation on bad swearing in Islam.

  1. Cursing Shows Immorality

“The true believer is not a slanderer, nor does he curse others, and nor is he immoral or shameless.” (Tirmidhi)

Islam has number of positive moral values any Muslim should show in daily life. Swearing while you talk is not one of them, so the use of foul language is dubbed immoral in Islam. Also read Importance of Morality in Islam

  1. Speaking with Good Words is More Recommended

“And speak to people good [words]” (2:83)

Speaking with good words which is pleasant to hear is another form of purity in Islam. Remember that Allah SWT loves good and beauty, including a beautiful tongue of a Muslim when they speak. A true believer only talks beautiful things to people.

  1. Stay Silent is Better

“He who believes in Allah and the Last Day let him speak good or remain silent”. (Bukhari and Muslim)

The hadith above says that if you don’t have something nice to say, stay silent is better. Silent means peace, while bad swearing damage it. Also read Positive Attitude in Islam According

  1. Swearing is the Doing of Satan

“And tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan induces [dissension] among them. Indeed Satan is ever, to mankind, a clear enemy.” (17: 53)

All the beautiful things is Islam, all the bad ones is Satan’s doing. When a Muslim use bad swearing in his talk, he falls in the trap of Satan which is full of dispute, lack of peace and only cause chaos in one’s mind. At the End of the Day, a Muslim must be responsible for this.

  1. Swearing Shrinks Down a Muslim’s Rank

Any displeasing words will shrink down the rank of a Muslim, to the level of Hell. Also read Best Way to Seek Forgiveness from Allah

Abu Hurairah (RA) reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “A man utters a word pleasing to Allah without considering it of any significance for which Allah exalts his ranks (in Jannah); another one speaks a word displeasing to Allah without considering it of any importance, and for this reason he will sink down into Hell.” (Bukhari)

  1. Swearing is Disobedience

Among the form of disobedience to Allah SWT, one of them is using foul language. Here is the prove about law of saying bad swear in Islam, taken from the Holy Quran.

“O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one’s] faith. And whoever does not repent – then it is those who are the wrongdoers.” (49:11)

  1. Allah SWT Hates Foul Language

A Muslim who wants to be a true believer will not do things Allah SWT hates. Also read Most Rewarding Deeds in Islam

“Allah does not like the utterance of bad language, unless one is treated with gross injustice.” But some translations interpret that verse as “Allah does not like the public mention of evil except by one who has been wronged.” (4:148)

  1. Allah SWT Ordered Muslims to Do Good Only

The purpose of human’s creation is to do good to others. Bad swear could humiliate people, which is not a good deed.

“And those who annoy believing men and women undeservedly, bear (on themselves) a calumny and a glaring sin.” (33:58)

  1. Swearing is Not the Characteristic of a Believer

“A believer is never a person who scoffs at others, calls them names, or utters vulgar and obscene phrases.” (Tirmidhi)

Further explanation of this Hadith is that belittling people, cursing them using bad language, as well as humiliating them is all prohibited in Islam. Use only decent words when you speak to anyone. Also read Character of Prophet Muhammad

  1. Swearing Causes Dispute

“Reviling a Muslim is an act of outrage (moral depravity) and fighting against him is an act of disbelief (Kufr)”. (Bukhari and Muslim).

Swearing brings many disadvantage to people. It puts two people in dispute, and while there are in it, swearing makes it worse. It’s difficult for two people in fight to reconcile when they have hurt because of the bad swearing they’ve thrown to each other.

  1. Swearing is Like Abusing Fellow Muslims

“The one who starts abusing his fellow Muslim and calling him names bears the sin of both, unless the abused person uses more vulgar phrases than the first”. (Muslim)

We can abuse people by words. In fact, words are far more dangerous than physical abuse. You can cure the wound, but you can’t take back what you have said. Swearing fellow Muslims with bad words is like abusing them. Also read Ways To Earn Good Deeds In Islam

  1. Swearing Causes the Wrath of Allah SWT

“Do not curse each other and do not summon the wrath of Allaah or His Hell on each other”. (Abu Dawood and Tirmidhi)

This could be the worst effect of bad swearing: it causes the wrath of Allah SWT. We, Muslims, hope for His blessing, not His wrath.

So those are the explanation on law of saying bad swear in Islam. After reading and understand it, hopefully from now on we can choose our words more carefully. So that we can keep the peace between Muslims.
