“And indeed, you are of a great moral character.” – Al-Qalam (68:4)
Having a good morality is very important in Islam. The importance of morality in Islam is high so that every Muslim must possess the quality of good moral character. It sets the way of life of a Muslim as well as defining his faith to Allah SWT. As Allah loves someone with a good characters, it becomes our obligation to keep improving our imaan and moral.
Here are some of the importance of morality in Islam:
1. Morality is a Part of Faith
Morality becomes highly important in Islam because having a good manner and characters is a part of the faith itself. Your perfect morality defines the perfect faith, while lacking in moral means that your faith is not perfect. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
“The believers most perfect in faith are those best in character.” – Tirmidhi

2. Reasons Why Muhammad Was Sent to Muslim
Before Islam, humans morality was so defect that a Messenger was sent to fix them all and show the right path in life. This was said by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), the last Messenger of Allah himself:
“I was sent to perfect the noble qualities of character.” – Ahmad
3. Important Thing in the Day of Judgement
In the Day of Judgement, every human will be judged only by a thing: his morality and character. Allah hates someone who lacks in both. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said,
“The heaviest thing to be placed in the balance of a believing slave on the Day of Judgement will be good behavior. And Allah hates the one who uses bad language.” – Al-Bayhaqi

4. Leading a Muslim to Paradise
Paradise is the dream of every Muslim. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) has once said what will brings a Muslim to Paradise.
Someone once asked the Prophet (peace be upon him) what deed would lead a man to paradise, and he answered: “Piety and good conduct.”

There is one qualities that said to be the most perfect and the most excellence of a Muslim, being a good moral.
“The most perfect man in his faith, among the believers, is the one whose behavior is the most excellent; and the best of you are those who are the best to their wives.” – Ahmad

6. Defining a Muslim’s Level
Muslims will be placed in different levels in Paradise. It defined by none other than a good character of a Muslim, and the good manner they have. The Prophet (peace be upon him) has made it clear.
“The dearest and nearest among you to me on the Day of Resurrection will be the one who is the best in conduct…” – Ibn An-Najjaar

Moral Qualities Every Muslims Should Have
Islam valued the great of character, as shown by the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) in his daily life in the past. He had set the standar of a good morality in Islam, and among many qualities of good morals, there are some of it that every Muslim must have. As said by Allah SWT
“(They are) those who are patient, those who are true, and obedient with sincere devotion in worship to Allah and those who spend (their wealth as Zakat and alms) and those who pray and beg Allah’s Pardon in the last hours of night.” – Ali Imran (3:17)
Here are the explanation of the characteristics mentioned above:
- Patience
The first thing for a Muslim to have since it’s the core of importance of morality in Islam. Patience helps the most in every aspect of life. It’s the key to endure hardship in life while keeping the faith to Allah SWT, developing good relations with fellow Muslims. By patience one’s not only able to get through the hardship safely but also place others before himself.
- Worshiping Allah Sincerely and Obediently
Humans were created to fulfill their faith to worship Allah SWT at all cost. Their obligation include five times of obligatory prayer everyday as well as other kind of worship. However, all of it must be done with a light heart under the purpose of seeking Allah’s pleasure.
- Spending Wealth in the Name of Allah
It can be done through zakat and sadaqa. A wealthy Muslim who can give more than zakat but his wealth is not enough to offer in it, he can perform charity in the name of Allah by helping fellow Muslims in need. Not only it brings many blessings from Allah, it will strengthen the ties between Muslims as well.
- Prayer in the Middle of the Night
This one is not obligatory, but whoever do it will gain a blessing that everyone can’t. Tahajjud prayer shows how deep the love of a Muslim for Allah is, as he is awake while most people are asleep. As it’s very particular, any dua a Muslim made during the time will be granted.
So those are all the importance of morality in Islam. Possessing a good character is a must for Muslim since it also shows how Islam truly is.
“And hasten to forgiveness from your Lord and for Paradise as wide as the heavens and the earth, prepared for the pious. Those who spend (in the cause of Allah) in prosperity and adversity, who restrain anger and who pardon the people, and Allah loves doers of good. And those who, when they commit any sexual immorality or wrong themselves (by transgression) remember Allah and ask forgiveness for their sins and who can forgive sins except Allah? And (those who) do not persist in what they have done while they know.” – Ali Imran (3:133-135)
