The time of dawn itself is one of the most extraordinary time of the others, so Allah chooses the time of dawn to command His servant on performing prayers (fajr prayer). In the Al-Qur’an, it is explained about the virtue of the fajr prayer, as explained in the following surah:

“So exalted is Allah when you reach the evening and when you reach the morning.” (Ar-Rum: 17)

“Establish prayer at the decline of the sun (from its meridian) until the darkness of the night and (also) the Qur’an of dawn. Indeed, the recitation of dawn is ever witnessed.” (Al-Isra: 78)

Besides the fajr prayers, the command of other prayers is very clear in Al-Qur’an, as explained belows:

“Indeed, your Lord knows, (O Muhammad), that you stand (in prayer) almost two thirds of the night or half of it or a third of it, and (so do) a group of those with you. And Allah determines (the extent of) the night and the day. He has known that you (Muslims) will not be able to do it and has turned to you in forgiveness, so recite what is easy (for you) of the Qur’an.

He has known that there will be among you those who are ill and others traveling throughout the land seeking (something) of the bounty of Allah and others fighting for the cause of Allah. So recite what is easy from it and establish prayer and give zakah and loan Allah a goodly loan. And whatever good you put forward for youselves – you will find it with Allah. It is better and greater in reward. And seek forgiveness of Allah. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. (Al-Muzzammil: 20)

Punishment of Leaving Fajr Prayer

If you perform fajr prayers, so many virtues lays in it that you can get later. Are you not afraid as a Muslim if called as a hypocrite for having neglected worship of fajr prayer? The average Muslim community generally neglects the fajr prayer caused by another routine’s activity like sleep. This has been explained and reinforced by the words of the Prophet, as explained below:

“Surely the most severe prayer performed by the hypocrites is the Isya prayer and the Fajr prayers. If they knew the virtue of both, they would come to it even by crawling. ” (Al-Bukhari : 657 and Muslim : 651)

“There is no more severe prayers perceived by the hypocrites than the Fajr prayers and the Isha prayers.” If they knew what was in it, surely they would come to it even if they had to drag along the ground. And indeed, I was thinking of telling the muadzin to peals iqamat. Then I told someone to lead the man, while I took the fire and I burned (the house) of people who did not come out (doing) the fajr prayer. (Al-Lu’lu wal Marjan: 383)

Then there is also a hadith from Sahih Al-Bukhari which says that:

“Something are even harder, once the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam dreamed, and the dream of the Prophets was real. He said, “Last night I dreamed to be visited by two figures sent to me. Both said, ‘Let’s go!’ Then I went with both of them. We went to someone who was lying down. Suddenly someone else stood over him lifting a large rock.

The rock was dropped by him on the head of the sleeper. The sleeper’s head broke, while the stone rolled away. The man followed the rock that rolled and took it. Before he returns to where the person lies down, the head has returned to as it was. The man returned and did what he had done before. “When the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam asked what he saw, the two figures replied,” We will tell you. The first person you met whom his head is broked by a rock is the one who takes the Al-Qur’an and refuses it and he sleeps not doing the obligatory prayer.” (Shahih Al-Bukhari: 7047)

From the above long explanations it can be drawn a conclusion that the severe punishment will be experienced by the Muslims who are lazy to get up from sleep for carrying out his duties as a Muslim to do Fajr prayer. See also : Rights of Travelers in Islam

“It is mentioned before the Prophet Shalallahu ‘Alaihi wa Sallam the existence of one who sleeps all night until morning arrives. He said, “That’s the man whose two ears urinated by Satan.” (Al-Bukhari: 1144 and Muslim: 774)

“Satan made three knots at the nape of one of you while he slept. In each of them he breathed, ‘Your night is still long, go to sleep!’ If he wakes up and dhikr to Allah, then loose another knot. And if he performs ablution, then loose another knot. And if he prays loose all the knots. (if it was so) in the morning he would be excited and his soul is pure. Otherwise, his soul will be impure and lazy.” (Al-Bukhari: 3269)
