13 Common Rules of Shaving in Islam

There are several types of shaved, one of which is shaved pubic hair, in Islam there are several procedures and benefits of shaving pubic hair.

There are things that are actually simple but not many Muslims are aware of this and are still embarrassed to inquire about dealing with shaving pubic hairs.

You need to know if shaved pubic hair is one of the sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad SAW and become a good nature according to the words of Rasulullah SAW from Abu Hurairah ra,

“Fitrah: circumcision, shaved pubic hair, shortening mustache, cut nails, and pluck pubic hair . “(Narrated by Bukhari 5891 and Muslim 257).

Islam teaches to shave pubic hairs regularly which certainly has many reasons and many benefits, especially related to health and hygiene.

1.      No more than 40 Nights

For the time to shave the pubic hair, it is recommended to be done regularly and not later than 40 days. It corresponds to the atsar told by Anas bin Malik’s best friend, “We were given time to shorten the mustache, shave the nails, pull out the armpits and shave the pubic hair so as not to be left for more than forty nights”. Imam Syaukani also explains in the book Nailul Authar,

“The maximum time limit is forty days as determined by the Prophet (SAS), then it is not permissible for a Muslim not to cut out over forty days. If in the range before 40 days and you want to cut it, then this is also still allowed and not violate the sunnah “.

2.      The Recommended Shaving Direction

In the procedure of shaving the pubic hair, should start with the upper right feather and then continue sideways to the left. If you have difficulty then it can be done from any direction depending on the situation.

The most important and important thing is to pray first so that jinn do not peek when you shave pubic hairs.

No prayer is specifically recommended for shaving of pubic hair and if not wishing to begin with prayer can also be done. Read more about  Virtues of Gratefulness in Islam

However, when a person opens aurat, this can be used as a time for jinn to peer so it is desirable to read basmalah or prayer to enter the bathroom as has been narrated on the hadeeth of Ali ibn Abi Talib where Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) said:

“The cover between the jinn and the genital Bani adam is when they enter the bathroom, say bismillah “. [HR. Tirmidhi]

3.      Husband Shaved His Wife’s Pubic Hair

There are some Muslim couples who question whether istihad may be done by the husband for reasons husband is not difficult when shaving his pubic hair and so more intimate and other reasons.

When a husband helps a wife to do istihdad, then certainly will also see aurat owned by the wife or vice versa and there are two opinions of scholars about it. [AdSense-B]

  • Makruh

Ulama who memakruhkan have the argument with the hadith riayat Ahiyyah radhiyallahu ‘anha who said,

“I never looked at the Prophet sallallaahu’ alaihi wa sallam altogether”. (Ibn Majah)

  • Mubah

The opinion of jumhur ulama who judges the hadith of Aisha is daif as it is called Al Hafizh Ibn Rajab. Besides other arguments is the narration of Aisha in Bukhari and Muslim who said,

“I once bathed with the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu’alaihi wa sallam from one vessel between me and him. Then he rushed with me to take water, until I said: leave me water, leave me water “. He said; “They were both in junub condition”. (Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim).

In Fathul Bari it is explained that if scholars such as Ad Daudi postulate the hadith dealing with husbands who look at the wife’s awrah. Read more about Benefits of Illness in Islam

While another hadith which is used as a handle to allow the husband to see his wife’s aurat is with the words of the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam,

“Keep your awrah except from your wife”. (Tirmidhi and Abu Daud, hasan)

Ibn Hajar Al Asqalani also gave an explanation if this hadith shows the husband can see the wife’s aurat. Ibn Hazm Azh Zhahiri also affirmed, “It is permissible for the husband to view the wife’s ‘property’ as his wife may also view the ‘property’ of the husband. It is not considered makruh at all. “

Related to hair, according to the scholars there are some restrictions that should not be done for a Muslim. Among others:

  1. Qaza ‘

In the Islamic Fiqh Wa Adillatuhu, Qaza ‘is the act of shaving a child’s hair at some point (randomly) and leaving it at some other point so irregular as a cloud clump. According to Imam Nawawi qaza ‘is to shave some of his head in total. Read more about Virtues of Laylatul Qadr Night

From Ibn ‘Umar radhiyallâhu’ anhumâ that he said,

أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم نهى عن القزع

“Verily Rasulullah shallallâhu ‘alaihi wa sallam forbade from Qaza’.”

Asked Nâfi ‘who narrated from Ibn’ Umar,

“What is Qaza ‘?” Nâfi’ replied, “Some of the heads of small children are barred, and others are abandoned.” (Narrated by Al-Bukhari and Muslim Lafazh hadith belongs to Muslim)

In this case, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade this ‘qaza’ activity as he said:

“Shave it whole or leave it entirely.”

Related to the hair nature of the Messenger of Allah, Ayesh ra said:

“The position of the hair of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is upon the tip of the ears and under the crown.”

The scholars say that Qaza ‘has four forms;

  • First, bald without sequence. He shaved the right, the left, the crown and his neck.
  • Second, bald the middle and leave the other two parts.
  • Third, bare the sides and let the middle.

Fourth, shaved the top of the head and let the other part. (Read Asy-Syarah Al-Mumti ‘1/167 by Shaykh Ibn’ Utsamin and Asy-Syarh Al-Mukhtashar ‘Al-Zâd Al-Mustaqni’ 1/123 by Shaykh Shalih Al-Fauzan)

  1. Lengthen Hair if not Glorify (Smoothing)

In some narrations mentioned, the hair of the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam long to touch his shoulder, as in many hadith, such as:

عن البراء بن عازب يقول ما رأيت من ذي لمة أحسن منه وفي رواية كان يضرب شعره منكبيه

From Bara ‘bin Azib, he said,

“I never saw hair beyond the ears of anyone who is better than the (hair) of the Messenger of Allah.” In another narration, “Hair of the Messenger of Allah came upon his shoulders.” (Narrated by Muslim)

But with regard to the law of extending it, the scholars differed. The first opinion says that it is the sunnah law. Others do not. Read more about Law of Playing Dice in Islam

The postulate of hair lengthening is sunnah, derived from the Prophet’s deeds. And imitating the Prophet is worship, as the Quranic theorem;

لقد كان لكم في رسول الله أسوة حسنة لمن كان يرجو الله واليوم الآخر وذكر الله كثيرا

“It is indeed in the Messenger of God that is a good example for you that is for those who hope for Allah and the Day of Judgment, and he calls Allah a lot.” (Surat al-Ahzab: 21)

[AdSense-A]  The second opinion extends the legal hair is not a sunnah, but just a mere custom, and the law is mubah (may be done and may not).

What is clear, lengthening hair should glorify and care for it neatly. As narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

“Whoever nurtures his hair should glorify it”.

The meaning of glorifying hair is to oil it, comb it, and not shave it completely because it is against the glorification of hair.

One of the Companions came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in a state of hair and beard that was disheveled. Read more about Virtues of Memorizing Surah Baqarah

Then the Holy Prophet told him to go home to tidy up after a new neatly returned to him. After that, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

“Is not this kind better than you come in a hairless and non-greasy condition that looks like a demon?”

  1. Paint The Gray with Black

On the day of liberation of the city of Mecca Abu Quhafah confronted the Messenger of Allah at that time his hair looks very white. Then the Apostle told him to go to his wife’s place so that his wife colored her hair and avoided the black color.

Anas bin Malik was once asked about hair dye of Rasulullah Shalallahu ‘Alaihi Wassallam. Then he replied:

“Hair of the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wassallam is gray except a little. However, Abu Bakr and Umar left him dyeing their hair with the leaves of his girlfriend / henna and katam leaves (a kind of plant to nourish hair). “

Based on that, salafush sholeh and tabi’in argue that not painting it better based on the hadith of the Prophet that prohibits painting Uban also he does not paint gray hair.

Narrated Abu Daud, from Ibn Abbas, he said, Rasulullah shallallahu alaihi wa sallam said,

(والحديث صححه الألباني في صحيح أبي داود) يكون

“There will be at the end of the age, the people who polish their hair like doves, so he does not smell the heaven.” (In Saheeh Abu Daud)

  1. Connecting Hair

Connecting the hair with either human hair or legal animal hair is forbidden. Here according to Imam Malik, Ath-Thabari and many other Ulama stated that connecting the hair either with hair, wool or a piece of fabric is forbidden. As the Prophet says:

“Allah curses the women who connect the hair and the one who is joined.”

  1. Women Shorten Hair

From Abu Salamah bin Abdurrahman rahimahullah he said,

كان أزواج النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم يأخذن من رءوسهن حتى تكون كالوفرة

“The wives of the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam cut their hair, to long as al-wafrah” (Muslim 320).

Al-wafrah is a long hair to the earlobe, but not beyond the earlobe. (Syarh-Sahih Muslim, an-Nawawi, 4: 4).

An-Nawawi quotes al-Qodhi Iyadh:

فعلنه بعد وفاته صلى الله عليه وسلم لافي حياته … وهو متعين ولايظن بهن فعله في حياته صلى الله عليه وسلم

“They (the wives of the Prophet) did so after the death of the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam and not when he was alive … that’s for sure. It is impossible to assume that they did so when the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam was alive. “(Syarh Sahih Muslim an-Nawawi, 4: 5).

Then an-Nawawi also asserted,

وفيه دليل على جواز تخفيف الشعور للنساء

“This Hadith is a proposition to cut hair for women.” (Syarh Sahih Muslim, an-Nawawi, 4: 5).

Based on the above hadith, the haircut for the legal woman may, as it is concluded by an-nawawi. However, the ulama provide other limitations, as follows:

  1. Should not be intended to resemble a hair model of a pagan woman or a wicked woman, such as an artist and such. If there is a hair mode that it comes from a pagan or an artist’s style, then it should not be imitated.

From Ibn Umar, the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said:

من تشبه بقوم فهو منهم

“Who imitates a people then he belongs to that people.” (Narrated by Abu daud, Ibn Abi Shyaibah and al-Albani)

Of course we do not want to be said to be part of ugly people or even infidels, because our hair mimics their hair.

  1. Should not resemble a man. Haircuts that generally characterize men, should not be imitated women.

From Ibn’Abbas radhiyallahu ‘anhu, he said,

لعن رسول الله صلى الله العربية

“Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam cursed men who resemble women and women who resemble men.” (Narrated by Bukhari 5435).

  1. Conducted without Husband’s Permission

The wives of the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam cut their hair after the Prophet sallallaahu’ alaihi wa sallam died. It teaches us how a wife tries to decorate and reveal the most attractive conditions for her husband. Read more about Virtues of Reading Surah Yaasin In The Morning

Let not the hair model that became the beauty crown for women, even the Shari’a forbids women to fast the sunnah, without the permission of the husband while her husband was at home. It’s all in order to realize the harmony between husband and wife.

  1. The Rule of Cutting a Newborn’s Hair

In Islam, there are some adab to welcome newborns, among them are aqiqah and shave baby hair. Rasulullah SAW said:

“A newborn child is sprinkled with his aqiqah, slaughtered from him (goat) on the seventh day of his birth, shaved his hair and named” (HR An-Nasa’I, Abu Dawud and At-Tirmidhi)

“Every child has aqiqahnya, slaughtered aqiaqah for him and remove the dirt from him” (Narrated by Bukhari).

The meaning of “to get rid of it” is to shave baby’s hair.

Associated with your question, then it is okay to shave your child’s hair at any time either before aqiqah or after aqiqah. Because basically the law of shaving the hair on the seventh day after born is sunnah muakkad (both for baby boy and baby girl) is not mandatory.

After shaving the baby’s hair, it is desirable to lay the weight of hair shaved in gold or silver. And the provision of this charity may be done anytime, because there is no postulate that limits the day, only more sure if done immediately after shaving the hair.

In the execution of hair shavings, there are some things to note, among which is Rasulullah SAW forbade to do Al-Qaz’u, ie shave some of the hair and let some others. As ibn ‘Umar RA tells us: [AdSense-C]

“Rasulullah SAW forbids qoza ‘.” (Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim)

As an example included in Al-Qaz’u:

  • Shave hair randomly (irregularly),
  • Shave hair in the center of the head only and let the hair on the right and left side of the head, or vice versa,
  • Shave the front of the head and let the back of the head.
  1. Cut The Newborn’s Hair to Remove Dirt

Shave hair is the implementation of the Prophet SAW command to remove dirt. With that we throw away the ugly or weak hair with strong hair and more useful for the head and more lighten for the baby. Read more about Good Months For Married in Islam

And it is useful to open the pore holes in the head so that heat waves can come out through it easily, which is very useful to strengthen the sense of sight, smell, and hearing the baby.
