20 The Importance of Prayer in Islam

We know that prayer is an obligation in the second Pillars of Islam, the history of obligation prayers began when our Prophet Muhammad SAW has a journey called Isra’ Mi’raj. At there the commands of prayer was given by Allah ta’ala. Allah told it to our Prophet Muhammad SAW that we as Muslims must do 50 times in a day.

Below this is the hadith that Allah commands of the 50 times in a day. The prophet Muhammad SAW said

“Allah obliged my people to pray 50 times in a day and I returned that commandment until I passed Moses’ prophet in which he asked,” What does God oblige to your people? “I replied,” Allah requires 50 times. “Moses said, “Return to your God, for your people will not be strong on that commandment.” So I came back and God wiped out half of it and I went back to Moses and said, “God has wiped out the falls.” Moses said again, “Return to your god, for your people will not be strong on that command.” So I came back and God wiped out half of it and I returned to Moses.Moses said again, “Return to your god, for your people will not be strong on that command.” So I came back and Allah said, “Prayer is five (time) and judged fifty (reward) and My words will not change.” I went back to Moses. Moses said again, “Return to your God.” But I said, “I am ashamed of my Lord.” (Bukhari Muslim)

1. Prayer is the pillar of Islam

Prayer is the pillar of Islam, when we building something the importance is the pillar if the pillar is not upright, then it will fall. Like this hadith narrated by Tirmidzi “The main thing is Islam, the pillar is the prayer and the culmination of its jihad.” In the other hadith, Rasulullah (peace be upon him) said:”The head of all affairs is Islam and the pillar is the prayer while peak is jihad.” (Narrated Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah, and Ahmad)

2. Prayer is the important things after reciting Shahadat

This hadith narrated by Abdullah bin Umar RA that our Prophet SAW said:

“Islam is built on five things, namely: (1) testifying that there is no righteous sacrifice to be worshiped except Allah and testifying that Muhammad is His messenger, (2) Establishing prayers, (3) Performing Zakat, (4) Baitullah (for those who can, -pen), (5) fast during Ramadan”. (HR Bukhari)

3. The virtuous deed

Prayer is an obligation and it is one of the virtuous deeds. The Messenger of Allah said to the following hadith. Below hadith will explain the virtuous deeds of prayers,  this hadith recorded by Ahmad and Ibn Hibban;

Once a man asked the Prophet (peace be upon him) about the most virtuous deed. The Prophet (peace be upon him) stated that the most virtuous deed is the prayer. The man asked again and again. The first three times, the Prophet (peace be upon him) again answered, “The prayer,” then on the fourth occasion he stated, “Jihad in the way of Allah.”

4. Invoking Allah SWT

Prayers are a way of worshiping Allah ta’ala to the bond between human and Allah Any request whatsoever will be accepted by Allah rather than praying with other circumstances.

In the Quran, Allah explains.

“O, you who believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed Allah is with the patient”
(Verse 2:153)

Therefore a Muslim must do prayers by means of invoking and ask to Allah ta’ala for help and assistance in any difficulty and worry. Inshallah Allah ta’ala will always help us with any our problems.

5. Leading to Taqwa

The truth is the ultimate goal that a Muslim must accomplish in this life. By performing the prayers every 5 times will make a Muslim a pious person (taqwa). The pious person is the person who always keeps the limit of prohibition and command of Allah. He will always be careful in carrying out Allah’s commands and away from what Allah forbid.

Below this Allah says in Quran:“This is the Book free of doubt and involution, a guidance for those who preserve themselves from evil and follow the straight path, Who believe in the Unknown and fulfill their devotional obligations, and spend in charity of what We have given them.” (Verse 2:2-3)

6. Reward in afterworld

Every deed whether it’s good or bad which Muslims so in the world must be rewarded. Including in performing the prayers, Muslims are always keeping performing the prayers will certainly receive reward until in the afterworld, as in the word of Allah ta’ala, Allah ta’ala says in Quran :

“Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds and establish prayer and give zakah will have their Lord, and there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.” (Verse 2:277)

7. Staying connected with Allah

Muslims who performing prayers is means of developing a connection with Allah ta’ala and when Muslim does five times a day, then the relation between us with Him will stay connected with Him as much as possible.

So, our relation automatically will grow strong. Allah says in Quran :

“And when you have completed the prayer, remember Allah standing, sitting or lying on your sides. But when you become secure, re-establish regular prayer. Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers a decree of specified times.” (Verse 4:103)

8. Protection from Satan

Satan always tries to prevent Muslims from doing things right. He tries with every effort to keep us, Muslims to break what Allah ta’ala has set out to do. With do the prayers, it will protect us from Satan. Allah Almighty says in Quran :

“Satan only wants to cause between you animosity and hatred through intoxicants and gambling and to avert you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer. So will you not desist?” (Verse 5:91)

9. Prevention form lewdness

The other important of prayer is, the prayer can prevent a person from all the lewdness that is common in the world today, a Muslim should find refuge in prayer as it will help in terms of evil. Performing prayer is an effective weapon when it comes to fighting lewdness and evils of all sorts, as Allah says in the Quran :

“Recite, [O Muhammad], what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater. And Allah knows that which you do.” (Verse 29:45)

10. Purification for a human being

While we perform a prayer, actually we turn and meet our Lord five times a day.Every prayer that we perform in a day, Allah should wipe away some of the evil deeds that we performed. In addition, prayer is a good deed and it is a type of purification for the human being.

Below this in the following hadith of the Prophet (peace be upon him):

“If a person had a stream outside his door and he bathed in it five times a day, do you think he would have any filth left on him?” The people said, “No filth would remain on him whatsoever.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) then said, “That is like the five daily prayers: Allah wipes away the sins by them.”

11. Remembered of Allah

Performing a prayer is the way of remembrance of Allah. Performing it with purity of heart,  sincerity, reverence, awareness, and repentance, Allah will accept our prayer. Allah said in the Quran. “He has succeeded who purifies himself, who remembers the name of his Lord and prays.” (Verse 87:14-15)

12. The prayer is light

Prayers are the light in the hearts of the believers and the ones that extend our breasts. This light is guidance and salvation when on the Day of Resurrection. This is what our Prophet says about light in this hadith.   “Whoever keeps the prayers, made for him the light, the guidance, and salvation on the Day of Resurrection.” (HR. Ahmad, Ibnu Hibban, dan at-Thabrani).

13. The first thing that to be asked in the Day of Resurrection

Prayer is the first thing that to be asked on the Day of Resurrection, after the other question about Who is your Lord and who is your Prophet? In here we could know that our prayers can be our helpers or not when we are in the grave.

Here is the hadith narrated by Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The first thing among their deeds for which the people will be brought to account on the Day of Resurrection will be prayer. Our Lord will say to His angels, although He knows best, ‘Look at My slave’s prayer, is it complete or lacking?’ If it is complete, it will be recorded as complete, but if it is lacking, He will say, ‘Look and see whether my slave did any voluntary prayers.’ If he had done voluntary prayers, He will say, ‘Complete the obligatory prayers of My slave from his voluntary prayers.’ Then the rest of his deeds will be examined in a similar manner.” 

14. The prayer is the Last Will from our Prophet Muhammad SAW

Before our Prophet Muhammad SAW dead, the Last Will of Prophet Muhammad SAW given to us is do five times prayer in a day.

Below this, the hadith explains that the Last Will of Prophet Muhammad SAW is doing prayer. Ummul Mu’minin Ummu Salamah, said, “The last testament of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) is the prayer, prayer, and slaves that you have.” So the Prophet Sallallahu ‘Alaihi wa Sallam hid it in his chest and did not spread it through it.” (HR Ahmad, saheeh)

15. Inviting the relatives to prays is a good deed
“And make mention in the Scripture of Ishmael. Lo! he was a keeper of his promise, and he was a messenger (of Allah), a prophet. He enjoined upon his people worship and almsgiving, and was acceptable in the sight of his Lord.” (Verse 19:54-55)

  • While we keep performing prayers, prayers are also a sign of loving Allah and appreciating His Blessings.
  • The text declared that who abandons prayer is a disbeliever (an atheist). Prophet Muhammad SAW said, “What lies between a man an atheism is abandoning prayer.” (Muslim)
    Keep performing prayer means that is a sign that we are Muslims if we abandon prayer so that we are in atheism.
  • While we perform prayers with others in a mosque, we stand in rows without any distinction of race, nationality, color, wealth, family or status, and all pray together as one body. A prayer is also an act of unity helps demolish all barriers which stand between them.
  • Performing prayers wipe all of our mistakes as Muslims in daily and also cures our problem in this life. Therefore it makes us patient and it prevents from Satan.
  • Prayer is an essential element in the building of believer’s character, feelings and behavior and linking them directly with the Lord.

Prayer is not just an obligation in Islam, keep performing prayers will protect us from evils of all sorts. Therefore prayer will make us be the pious person, and the reward will be in the afterworld. In the Day of Resurrection, prayer is the first thing to ask. While we keep the performing prayers, it will be our tickets to entering heaven that Allah has told in Quran. Prayer is the last will of Prophet Muhammad given to all Muslims, our Prophet told us to keep our prayers until we are dead.
