12 Wise Tips to Deal with Grief in Islam

The loss of loved ones cause us to grief. It takes time to let go and go back to everyday life as normal as possible. But everyone will eventually return to the Creator, Allah SWT. It has been written inside the Holy Quran where Allah SWT said,

“…Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return.” (2:156)

But we can’t accept the death of someone we love without sadness. As we try to accept the decree that Allah SWT has made, going through the grief has always been the most difficult times. Any tips to deal with grief in Islam would seem meaningless as nothing can heal our heart that fast.

However, life goes on. If we can’t move forward, we will be swallowed by the time and left behind. Here are some tips to deal with grief in Islam that can be applied in daily life.

  1. Socialize with Others

When you feel sad, look around you and see how many blessings you have. Don’t isolate yourself, don’t refuse to go out of the house and make you feel lonely. A lonely person is an easy prey for Shaytan. Go out and socialize, since meeting others people will drive your focus and attention to something else so that you won’t remember your sadness anymore.   1. Focus on the Things That Make You Happy

The best remedy for sadness is none other than happiness. When you’re down and sad, do things that make you happy, focus only to your happiness. Avoid doing things that trigger you to feel sad again.

It’s include staying away from bad people. Remember that there will people who dislike you and mock your sadness. This negativity will only make you even sadder than before.

  1. Have Patience

“How wonderful is the case of a believer; there is good for him in everything and this applies only to a believer. If prosperity attends him, he expresses gratitude to Allah and that is good for him; and if adversity befalls him, he endures it patiently and that is better for him.” (Muslim)

You will be healed over time. It takes time. Sooner or later you will recover and go back to normal. All you have to do is being patient.   1. Love Yourself

When you are grieving, you feel sad, devastated, and shock at the same time. Only you know how deep your scar is so you don’t have to listen to what others say. The most important thing is to heal yourself. Start taking care of yourself by looking for a good friends, doing new activities, and anything that makes you heal faster.

  1. Avoid Stressful Things

The next tips to deal with grief in Islam to avoiding stressful things. You have to know what makes you sad and what makes you happy. Keep close with the first and stay away from the latter.   1. Keep Yourself Busy

“For indeed, with hardship [will be] ease.” (94:5)

Going back to work is the fastest way to get over with your grief and sadness. Meeting your workmate again, keeping yourself busy will make you forget about your current situation. You are going through hardships and when you succeeded, a great reward will be given.

  1. Stay Healthy

Stay healthy in every way: mentally, physically, and spiritually. Don’t ever neglect one and prioritize other. Keep those three balanced to restore your condition. With healthy body, you will get over your sadness. Also read Importance of Health in Islam

  1. Let Out the Sadness

It’s okay to feel sad. You may cry if you want, but don’t get carried away.

“O Allah’s Apostle, even you are weeping!” He said, “O Ibn ‘Auf, this is mercy.” Then he wept more and said, “The eyes are shedding tears and the heart is grieved, and we will not say except what pleases our Lord, O Ibrahim! Indeed we are grieved by your separation.” (Muslim)

  1. Recite Quran Daily

  1. Stay Positive

“Perhaps you hate a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you.  And Allah knows, while you know not.” (2:216)

Nobody wants to lose their loved ones. Despite the despair, you must have good thoughts only to Allah.

  1. A Great Reward Awaits

Remember that grief is a trial from Allah SWT and great rewards awaits.

“The greatest reward comes with the greatest trial.  When God loves a people, He tests them.  Whoever accepts this, wins His Pleasure.”  (Tirmidhi)

  1. Remember Allah SWT All the Time

Keep Allah in remembrance you can always be at ease.

“Your Lord is He that makes the ship go smoothly through the sea for you that you may seek of His Grace, for He is Most Merciful to you.  When distress seizes you at sea, you cry to nobody save Him (God), but when He brings you back safely to the land, you turn away (from Him).  Most ungrateful is man!” (17:66-67)

When we are sad, all the tips to deal with grief in Islam would seems useless. It’s okay to be sad, but we must keep in mind that Allah SWT gives difficulties to the servants that He loves the most. Take it that Allah SWT misses us and want us to turn back to Him.

“Every soul shall taste death. And We test you with evil and with good as trial. And to Us you will be returned.” (21:35)
