Truthfulness is an act that does not break the law of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala or we often heard it as amar ma’ruf nahi munkar. Islam has a valid and accurate standard to judge a view or opinion. So, the truthfulness of view and opinion apply in anywhere and every time.
Once upon a time, Abdullah bin Mas’ud r.a. told a story,
“Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam made a straight line for me, then he said, ‘it is the way of Allah’, then he made another lines in the right side and the left side, then he said, ‘These are (many) ways. In every ways, there is Satan who invite to that way,” then he read,
{وَأَنَّ هَذَا صِرَاطِي مُسْتَقِيمًا فَاتَّبِعُوهُ وَلاَتَتَّبِعُوا السُّبُلَ فَتَفَرَّقَ بِكُمْ عَنْ سَبِيلِهِ}
‘And [moreover], this is My path, which is straight, so follow it; and do not follow [other] ways, for you will be separated from His way.” ([Q.S. Al-An’am : 153] Shaheeh hadith is narrated by Ahmad and others)

Here are some virtues of truthfulness in Islam,
- The concept of Tauhid
In Islam, God is Esa, He is Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala. Laa ilaaha illallah. If we want to think for a moment, the oneness of God is very right. For example, if this nature is controlled by two gods with different ego, then this nature will break down. So, there is no God besides Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala and that is impossible
- Rasulullah SAW brought and spread Sharia
Muhammad Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam as Rasulullah saw is a role model for us. He was known by his honesty, his wisdom, his friendliness, Al-Amin and many more. He was the holy figure and kept from all faults. From those noble characters, then proved the truthfulness in Islam.

- Hold on the Qur’an
As Moslem, we should believe in it as a revelation that is absolute truth. Then, all of opinions and views that contradict with the truthfulness of Qur’an, are declared as heresy and absolute batil.
Imam Syafi’i said : “Every people who talk based on Qur’an and Sunnah, then that [speech] is a provision that must be followed. And every people who do not talk based on Qur’an and Sunnah, then that (speech) is confusion.” (Manaqib Asy Syafi’i : 470)
- Hold on Sunnah
Sunnah is a partner of Qur’an. Both of them are revelations that must be followed by us as the word of Allah Azza wa Jalla :
وَمَا يَنْطِقُ عَنِ الْهَوَىٰ إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا وَحْيٌ يُوحَىٰ عَلَّمَهُ شَدِيدُ الْقُوَىٰ
“Your companion [Muhammad] has not strayed, nor has he erred, nor does he speak from [his own] inclination. It is not but a revelation revealed.” (An-Najm : 3 – 5)

- Understand Qur’an and Sunnah
There are some dalils that command us to understand Qur’an and Sunnah according to the insight of slafus shaleh, such as
Allah Azza wa Jalla said :
“And the first forerunners [in the faith] among the Muhajireen and the Ansar and those who followed them with good conduct – Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him, and He has prepared for them gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever. That is the great attainment.” (Q.S. At-Tawbah : 100)
- Analyze the validity of dalil
This thing applies when a hadith is become as dalil, then the hadith that is become the weakness dalil is hasan lighairih. So that, we do not hold on with dhaif hadith, moreover to the dream, imagination and bad mind. Because a fallacy and bid’ah can be caused by weak or fake hadiths.
- The validity of placing dalil (Istidlal)
Not limited to the validity of dalil, but we should know the validity of placing dalil when we take a law from that dalil. After researching the validity of dalil, we should research the validity of istidlal, it is right when take a law from that dalil. How many heretic groups twist the insight of shaheeh dalil.
- Hold on Ijma’
An oppinion and insight do not confront with ijma’ of Ulama. Ijma’ is an agreement Ulama about a law. The source of ijma’ is Qur’an and Sunnah. Ijma’ happens because there are many dalils and explanation about the matters of this religion. There is no doubt about it. So, all Ulama agree about that. Example of ijma’ is Qur’an still stays its authentically until the Hereafter. If there is person who break the agreement of ijma’, then he has been opposite with many dalils and Ulama.
- Relied on Shaheeh Qiyas
As Moslem, we should relied on shaheeh Qiyas, do not relied an insight on Al-Fasid Qiyas. For example, do Qiyas between the character of Allah Azza Wa Jalla with the character of His creatures, do Qiyas between Dead world with the universe, do Qiyas between events in the Hereafter with events in this world.
- Get closer to Allah SWT
“And when My servants ask you, [O Muhammad], concerning Me – indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me [by obedience] and believe in Me that they may be [rightly] guided.” (Q.S. Al-Baqarah : 186)

- Allah SWT hates those who refuse truthfulness
Do not you refuse truthfulness. Because Allah SWT hate those who refuse truthfulness and arrogance. The Prophet Muhammad saw said :
“Those who have arrogance as mustard seed will not enter to the Heaven. A man asked : “There is someone who love his cloth and his sandal [good] (is it a arrogance?) He answered : “Indeed Allah the Most Beautiful and love beauty. Arrogance is refusing truthfulness and demeaning human.” (Narrated by Muslim, number 2749, from ‘Abdullah bin Mas’ud r.a.)
- Do not alike Jews
Allah Azza wa Jalla said :
“And when there came to them a Book from Allah confirming that which was with them – although before they used to pray for victory against those who disbelieved – but [then] when there came to them that which they recognized, they disbelieved in it; so the curse of Allah will be upon the disbelievers.” (Q.S. Al-Baqarah : 86)
- Allah SWT will give many rizq
If a Moslem is always in the way of truthfulness, then Allah Azza Wa Jalla will give him many rizq as His word below :
وَأَنْ لَوِ اسْتَقَامُوا عَلَى الطَّرِيقَةِ لَأَسْقَيْنَاهُمْ مَاءً غَدَقًا
“So We might test them therein. And whoever turns away from the remembrance of his Lord He will put into arduous punishment.” (Q.S. Al-Jinn : 16)
