Loving treasure is the nature of man. Therefore, some people try to reach the treasures by all means, regardless of halal or haram. Among the ways to reach the treasures that many people like is gambling. Because if lucky, the culprit will be able to reap the treasures in fantastic numbers without much effort. The gambling does have benefits, but the vice is much bigger.

Definition of Gambling in Islam
Gambling in syar’i law is called maysir and qimar. Maysir and qimar itself are
“transactions made by two parties or more for the possession of a good or service that benefits one party and harms the other by associating the transaction with an action or event“.
Furthermore, the word “maisir” in Arabic means getting something very easily without hard work or profit without work, therefore called gambling. Maysir is also said to oblige to give up the treasure for the losers and to collect the treasure for the victorious.
For some people, gambling is just as entertainment, and often there is the assumption that gambling is allowed, especially in the condition of ordinary people who think that gambling is a very common thing and reasonable, in guarding night post for example, but in the view of al-qur ‘an gambling is a forbidden act in Islam, the first word in the QS. Al-baqarah: 219 shown in this crime states that gambling crime is much worse than the profit it earns. For more complete paragraph is as follows:
‘They ask you about wine and gambling. Say, “In them is great sin and [yet, some] benefit for people. But their sin is greater than their benefit.” And they ask you what they should spend. Say, “The excess [beyond needs].” Thus Allah makes clear to you the verses [of revelation] that you might give thought.’
In other verse, Allah Azza wa Jalla does not deny the benefits of gambling, such as the victory that some people might get, then use it for themselves and their families. But those benefits are not worth the damage that will destroy the religion of the perpetrators. The verse from Al-Maa’idah verse 90-91 will explained that :
‘O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other than Allah ], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful. Satan only wants to cause between you animosity and hatred through intoxicants and gambling and to avert you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer. So will you not desist?’

In this glorious verse, Allah Ta’ala holds gambling or qimar with khamr, al anshab and al azlam. These are the things that are undoubtedly his luck. Therefore this is the illegal gambling argument. Al khamru (khamr) we already know together. It is a drink that if someone drink it will make it drunk, then lose its mind, all or some. So he talks and plays without thinking and without reason.
Sometimes it makes him fall into adultery, sometimes to murder, sometimes to burning, sometimes divorcing his wife, and such. Therefore the Sharia prohibits it. As for al anshab, it is illegal to do so. Because it is a means of worshiping idols. Something associated with al anshab, khamr and al azlam, no doubt it is illegal and lawless.

Concept of Gambling
Understanding the nature of a prohibition is very important to everyone. So when the ban changes shape, he is not easily fooled and still knows that something is still forbidden. Included in this case, for example, understand the meaning and nature of maisir (gambling) that is prohibited by Islam. Some scholars’ explains that maisir means betting. Ibn Hajar al-Makki rahimahullah, in Az-Zawajir ‘an Iqtirafil Kaba’ir, 2/200 said that
‘Al-Maisir (gambling) is a bet of any kind,’
Al-Mahalli rahimahullah said in Al-Minhaj bi Hâsyiyah al-Qalyubi said that:
‘The form of betting that is forbidden is the possibility of getting luck or loss.’
But some other scholars explain that maisir includes bets or other forms. Similarly lafazh maisir according to the majority of scholars includes games with cards and chess (although there is not always a gamble). It also includes the buying and selling of gharar (buying and selling of unsound nature and goods so as to endanger one or both parties) prohibited by the Prophet Muhammad saw., because it contains the same qimâr (gambling / with maisir (in terms of the Qur’ân). Qimar itself has the meaning of one’s possessions in a bet between obtaining a substitute or not. Like a man who buys a runaway slave, a blurred camel, a habalul habalah (an animal to be conceived by an animal in the womb), and the like, which he may either get it or not get it.
Gambling can also be called rijs or unclean. Ar rijs means unclean. The ar rujz means sin, and all that is harmful. God sometimes calls idols with rijs, as in His word from Al-Hajj verse 30:
‘That [has been commanded], and whoever honors the sacred ordinances of Allah – it is best for him in the sight of his Lord. And permitted to you are the grazing livestock, except what is recited to you. So avoid the uncleanliness of idols and avoid false statement.’
Gambling is also a demonic practice. Allah Ta’ala explains that gambling is the practice of Satan in his word (which means):
“… (gambling) is included acts of shaitan”.
And all deeds which are deeds of Satan, the laws are forbidden. Because the devil is very eager to mislead people and plunge them into error. So if you know that gambling is a deed of Satan, then know that the devil is not coming to you except to trick you and deceive you, and make enmity between you and your brother. So Satan is a human enemy. Allah Ta’ala has warned man of this enemy with a harsh warning. Allah Ta’ala said in surah Fathir verse 6 that :
‘Indeed, Satan is an enemy to you; so take him as an enemy. He only invites his party to be among the companions of the Blaze.’
Khamr, gambling, al anshab, and al azlam are the practices of demons, which means the practice is brought by the devil. And these practices are devoted to demons to the slaves, and devils decorate-so that people are persuaded to do it and fall into it. If we already know something is a demonic practice, it is up to you to stay away from it and leave it until you are safe. Because the devil does not want of you except destruction and mischief for you. And the devil always stays in the human heart, whispering human breasts. Allah has sent down a letter, which is the last letter of the Qur’an :
‘Say, “I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind. The Sovereign of mankind. The God of mankind. From the evil of the retreating whisperer – Who whispers [evil] into the breasts of mankind – From among the jinn and mankind.”‘

The conclusion is khamr, gambling, al anshab, al azlam, has been forbidden by Allah because it is a devil’s practice. These are the things that the devil do and are denied by the devil to do it. Satan invites build idols until they are worshiped. Satan demands people to drink khamr. Satan demands people to gamble. Satan demands people to vote fate with arrows. Thus these things are devils. If you already know it, then stay away until you are safe from Satan. Allah Ta’ala says (which means):
“Verily (drink) khamar, gamble, (sacrifice for) idolatry, cast fate with arrows, is included devil’s actions”.

The Law of Gambling in Islam
‘They ask you about wine and gambling. Say, “In them is great sin and [yet, some] benefit for people. But their sin is greater than their benefit.” And they ask you what they should spend. Say, “The excess [beyond needs].” Thus Allah makes clear to you the verses [of revelation] that you might give thought.’
This verse is come from Al-Baqarah verse 219. Allâh Subhanahu wa Ta’ala has mentioned that gambling is a sin, as mentioned in Surah al-Baqarah verse 219 above. Likewise Allâh Azza wa Jalla has mentioned various evils of drinking khamr and gambling, so that people who use his mind immediately away from him.
Judi is clearly a sinful act. The gamble’s sin is not only found by the person who does it, even the words of gambling are subject to sin and are ordered to pay kaffarah / kifarat (penaltis) by charity, as mentioned in the hadith of Bukhari no. 4860 and Muslim no. 1647.
‘From Abu Hurairah Radhiyallahu anhu, he said: Rasûlullâh Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said: Whosoever swears by saying’ For Latta and ‘Uzza, let him say,’ Lâ ilâha illa Allah ‘. And whoever says to his friend, ‘Let me bring you gamble’, let him give charity!”.’
Conclusion
The damage of maisir (gambling) is greater than the damage to usury. Because maisir damage includes two damages: damage (because) eat the treasures by way of haram and damage (because) the game is forbidden. Because the gambling prevents a person from remembering Allâh and from prayer, as well as causing enmity and hatred. Therefore maisir (gambling) is forbidden before the prohibition of usury. That was the explanation about gambling. Obviously gambling is prohibited because there have much more harm things and loss, and Allah strongly ordered to avoid the gambling.
