14 Ways How to Avoid Forgetfulness in Islam for Every Muslim

Brain is one of the most important part of a human’s body. It is the core and controlling other organs to work well. Storing the memories and keeping it for the long period of time is among the main function of the brain. However, some people suffer from forgetfulness. For sure forgetfulness brings many disadvantages in everyday life.

Forgetfulness is often associated with age, where old people tend to forget things easily rather than the younger ones. It doesn’t necessarily have to be like that. Even a young person can be forgetful and it has nothing to do with their age.

There are certain ways how to avoid forgetfulness in Islam for every Muslim to follow:

1. Make a Lot of Dua

The first thing to do to avoid forgetfulness is by making dua to Allah SWT. If our intention of having a strong memories is for good deeds, such as spreading knowledge to others, Allah SWT will surely helps us. Dr. Zakir Naik has once said that constantly reciting Surah Thaha verse 25-28 helps strengthen the memories.

2. Get Many Rest

The brain needs to rest so that it can regain it strength back. After a long tiring week of working, we need some time to relax our brain so it can works even better. Go travel to some peaceful place helps to put peace in our mind, which is good to avoid forgetfulness.

3. Eat a Lot of Honey

Honey is one of the most beneficial food in Islam. It helps increase the health, as well as strengthening the memories. Drink honey water everyday brings many benefits for the brain.

“You should eat honey because it is good for the memory.” – Imaam al Zuhri

4. Eat Raisins

Another beneficial food for a good memory are raisins. Eating raisins and drinking honey are two most recommended routine to avoid forgetfulness from the young age. Beside, both are very good for health.

“Whoever wants to memorize hadeeth should eat raisins.” – Imaam al Zuhri

5. Retreat from Committing Sins

Committing sins can be affected us badly, such as having a bad memory and our ability to retain knowledge decreasing. Knowledge and sin can’t be getting along together so that if we want to have good memory we should stop committing sins. Instead, we have to do as many good deeds as we can.

6. Do the Cupping Method

Cupping is the best curing method in Islam. It bring many advantages for health, such as releasing toxins inside the body and make the blood cleaner. Among the benefits is that cupping promotes the function of the brain, so that it can store memories better.

Abu Hurairah (R.A) reported that the Messenger (SAW) said, “If there was something excellent to be used as a remedy then it is cupping (hijama).” – Abu Dawood and Ibn Majah

7. Use Miswak

Miswak is a branch of a tree that the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to brush his teeth. Brushing teeth with miswak was believed to improve the memories, as well as providing a good hygiene for the teeth.

Narrated Abu Hurairah, the Prophet said, ‘If I had not found it hard for my followers or the people, I would have ordered them to clean their teeth with siwak for every prayer.”

8. Always in Remembrance Allah SWT

How to avoid forgetfulness in Islam is by keeping remembrance of Allah SWT everywhere and every time. It can be done by recalling His names through dhikr. This way we build a strong connection with Allah SWT so that He will make everything easier for us.

“…And remember your Lord when you forget…” (18:24)

9. Make Use of the Brain

Brain is like a knife that should be sharpened from time to time. We have to make use of our brain everyday by reading book, learning something new, improving new knowledge, reciting and memorizing Quran, and bring ourselves closer to Allah SWT. The more we use our brain for good things, the more our memories improved.

10. Get the Brain’s Nutrient

Good foods will improve the brain’s health so it can work better for us. Allah SWT and the Prophet (peace be upon) has named many kind of food that are good as brain’s nutrient. According to a research in France, olive oil proved to improve verbal fluency and visual memories. Another nutritious food for brain being salmon meat, honey, dates, almonds, and blueberries.

11. Maintain a Healthy Body

Healthy mind comes from healthy body. To keep our brain healthy, we should start off focusing on our body’s health first. Doing regular exercise is a good way to train our body. Running, aerobics, and other kind of workout would be equally beneficial for the body. Simple exercise could be done daily by taking the stairs instead of the elevator.

12. Take a Good Sleep at Night

An adult should at least sleeping 7 to 8 hours a day. When we sleep, all of our organs get some rest too and they work to regenerate their cells, replace the old cells with the new and healthier ones.

13. Napping at Noon

Taking a nap is highly recommended by the Prophet, around 15 to 30 minutes for Zhuhr times. It is proved to be improving memories and energy levels.

14. Ask Help from Allah

Last but not least, we must involve Allah SWT including when we want to avoid forgetfulness. Indeed, Allah SWT gives us help whenever we ask for it.

So those are all the ways how to avoid forgetfulness in Islam. Build a strong relationship with Allah is the key to have a good and strong memories. When we are not forgetful as a person, surely we can do many good deeds for others. May we always be a good Muslim.
