14 Importance of Dignity of Work in Islam

Working is a way to get happiness in the world and the Hereafter, inner and outer. Islam’s teaching pushes every Moslem to their job seriously. So that, every Moslem cannot be separated with working. By working, they uphold their dignity lives.

The dignity of work refers to the work process, the intrinsic value of work and the benefit of having satisfying, rewarding work. This raises issue of job satisfaction, job and work design and access to skill enhancement and career progression. Dignity also implies that we are able to grow in our jobs.

This means that our jobs should allow us to continue to learn by enhancing our skills and be treated like a valued member of a team, rather than a replaceable cog in a machine.

It is explained in a hadith below :

“From Miqdan r.a from the Prophet Muhammad shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam, he said : someone who eats is not better than from the result of his work. Indeed the Prophet Daud a.s., eat from the result of his work.” (Narrated by Bukhari)

  1. Working is better than mooching

“From Abu Abdullah Az-Zubair  bin Al’Awwam r.a., he said : Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said : Indeed if one of you take some strings, then go to the mountain and back with carry firewood on his shoulder and sell it, then with that result, Allah fulfill your needs, that is better than mooch to others, both they give or not.” (Narrated by Bukhari)

  1. Working is a very glory behavior

Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam gave an interesting lesson about the importance of working. In Islam, working is not only fulfill the needs of stomach, but it also keep honor and human dignity that should be upheld. Because working in Islam places in the noblest position. Islam really respects people who works with his own hand.

  1. Get forgiveness from Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala

“In a hadith, Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said : Whoever feel exhaustion at night because he worked at noon, then he is forgiven by Allah at that night.” (Narrated by Ahmad and Ibn Asakir)

  1. Get a high appreciation

In Islam, People who work and try to get earnings by his own hands are listed as jihad fi sabilillah. So that, Islam gives a very high appreciation for those who want to work hard to find earnings.

  1. Add dignity human

Working is related with the dignity of human. Someone who have worked hard and focus with his work will add his dignity. On the contrary, people who do not work or unemployed, they will lose their dignity in front of himself and others. This thing will plunge human to bad deeds, such as mooching that is a despicable act in the side of human and Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala. [AdSense-B]

  1. Working is an obligation

Working is an obligation in Islam. Because of that, no wonder if Umar bin Khattab has banned people who were in the mosque. So, they went out to find earnings. Umar didnot like to see people who were enjoy in the mosque at noon, while the sun has shined.

  1. Get rewards

Working in Islam is an obligation or fardhu. In Fiqh, people who do obligations will get rewards, while those who leave it will get sins. About the obligatory of working, Rasulullah said,

“Seeking halal rizq is a duty after doing fardhu things (such as prayers, fasting and many more).” (Narrated by ath-Thabrani and al-Baihaqi)

  1. Can fix the quality of your work

By working, someone will always think to fix the quality of his work. So that, there is no time to wonder, dream and muse. Contrarily for unemployment, dreaming is his activity that spend his time. Indeed, dreaming is the whisper of satan and it can be the source of all criminals.

  1. Get the sanctity of soul

Working is also related with the sanctity of soul. Someone who is busy to work will be out of time to relax, chat, moreover ghibah ( talk about others). Ghibah is not only the habit of women, but men who have many free times also do it.

  1. Be equated with mujahid

In Islam’s view, someone who has worked hard to seek halal rizq that the result is used in the way of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala will be equated his position with mujahid who war in the way of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala. Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said,

“Indeed Allah loves a servant who work and has skills. Whoever struggle to make ends meet for his family, then he is equal with a mujahid in the way of Allah Azza wa Jalla.” (Narrated by Ahmad)

  1. Determine the quality of life

High or low someone’s quality is determined by deeds or his work. This is confirmed in Al-Qur’an Surah Al Ahqaf verse 19, which reads :

“And for all there are degrees [of reward and punishment] for what they have done, and [it is] so that He may fully compensate them for their deeds, and they will not be wronged.” (Q.S. Al Ahqaf : 19)

  1. Wishes and needs can be fulfilled

Wishes and needs can be fulfilled when someone works hard. Working is a medium to fulfill those needs and wishes. At first, maybe you will be lazy and forced, but then working can be a need and your pride.

  1. Get blessings from Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala

A halal job that is done sincerely will bring His blessings in every efforts and results. Treasure that is resulted through work hard (although just a little) will be viewed more value than inheritance or someone’s gift. [AdSense-C]

  1. Get Allah’s love

To reach Allah’s love, a Moslem has to use his skill and his chance to get something useful. So that, he has used His blessing to get another blessings. He will work seriously and maximize his chance to provide his needs and others. Things like this that is loved by Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala.
