Law of Fasting Monday and Thursday on The Sha’ban Month

Ramadan fasting is an obligation for Muslims to perform for those who are capable. In addition to Ramadan fasting, there are also other kinds of sunnah fasting that we can do as a deed of our worship.

In contrast to the fast of sunnah, Ramadan fasting must be replaced immediately before entering the next Ramadan. In the month of Sha’ban, people will usually replace the Ramadan fasts ago since Sha’ban is the last time or the last limit to pay the Ramadan fasting. Yet there is also the Monday and Thursday sunnah fasting  which is usually done in Sha’ban month, in addition to fasting. As the Apostle also likes to fast on Monday and Thursday. From ‘Aisha radhiyallahu’ anha, he said,

“The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam used to put the option of fasting on Monday and Thursday. “(Narrated by An Nasai no 2362 and Ibn Majah no. 1739. Ali Hafiz Abu Thohir said that this hadith hasan, Shaykh Al-Albani said that this hadith is saheeh)”

Sunnah fasting done in Sha’ban month can actually be done if it is a habit in every month, not only devoted to Sha’ban month. Read also : law female leads prayer in Islam

As Bukhari narrated, no. 1970, Muslim, no. 1156 from Aisha radhiallahu anha, he said,

“Usually the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam fasted on the whole month of Sha’ban. (That is) fasting in Sha’ban month except for a few (a few days that do not fast).”

This hadith indicates the allowance of fasting after mid-month of Sha’ban, but for anyone who wants to connect with the previous fast.

In addition, Monday and Thursday fast is still permissible before entering the middle of Sha’ban month with the requirement as before that is a habit. There is a prohibition on performing sunnah fasting in the middle of Sha’ban month. Read also : punishment for not fasting in Ramadhan

Narrated by Abu Daud, no. 3237, Tirmizi, no. 738, Ibn Majah, no. 1651 from Abu Hurairah radhiallahu anhu indeed Rasulullah sallallahu alaihi wa sallam said:

“If you have entered the middle of Sha’ban, then do not fast.” (Divided by Al-Albany in Shahih Tirmizi, 590)

But this prohibition does not apply to people who perform fasting for replacing Ramadan because fasting in Ramadan still needs to be replaced. As the saying of the Apostle:

“Do not precede the month of Ramadan by fasting a day or two days, but someone who (accustomed) fast, then do it.” (Narrated by Bukhari)

This suggests that fasting after mid-month of Sha’aban is permissible for people who have fasting habits, such as someone accustomed to fasting Monday and Thursday or fasting a day and breaking a day or something.

There are so many virtues of  fasting in Monday & Thursday if we do it regularly every month, some of them are as follow:

1. Earn a lot of Happiness

Rasulullah Sholallahu Alaihi Wassalam said :

Means :

“Every good deed done by human will be multiplied by ten goodness such as up to seven hundred times. Allah Ta’ala says (which means), “Except the practice of fasting. The practice of fasting is for Me. I’ll personally respond.

[AdSense-B]

Because he has left lust and food because of Me. For a fasting person there will be two blisses of happiness when he breaks his fast and is happy when he meets his Rabb. It is true that the smell of the mouth of a fasting person is more sweet in the sight of Allah than the smell of kasturi oil.” (Narrated by Muslim)

2. Imitate Rasulullah

From Aisyah Radhiyallahu ‘Anhu, she said:

Means :

“It is the Prophet Shallallahu ‘Alaihi Wasallam who increase fasting in Monday & Thursday.” (Narrated by At-Tirmidhi, Al-Nasai & Ibn Majah. This hadith validated by Al-Albani)

Means :

“Say, “I am only a man like you, to whom has been revealed that your god is one God. So whoever would hope for the meeting with his Lord – let him do righteous work and not associate in the worship of his Lord anyone.” (QS. Al-Kahfi : 110)

3. Earn Forgiveness

From Abu Hurrairah ra. That Rasulullah Shalallahu Alaihi Wassalam said :

Means :

“The doors of Heaven are open on Mondays and Thursdays. So any servant who does not associate Allah with anything will be forgiven his sins, unless the one who between him and his brother have a hostility.

[AdSense-C]

Then it says, ‘Pardon the forgiveness of these two men until they are at peace, pardon the two men until they are at peace, postpone the two men until they are at peace’. (Narrated by Muslim)

4. It is right by the day of deeds given to Allah SWT

From Usamah bin Zaid said;

“I said to Rasulullah SAW,” O Rasulullah, you are seen fasting until it is thought that there is no time for you not to fast. You also seem not fasting, to an extent that you never thought fast. Except for the two days that you met it and fasted at that time. “Rasulullah SAW said,” What are the two days? “Usamah replied,” Monday and Thursday. “Then he said,” Those two days are the time of dealing with the Rabb of the Worlds (on Allah). I really like when my deeds are faced while I’m in a state of fasting.” (Narrated by An-Nasai)

Those are some of the virtue of Monday & Thursday fasting on the month of Sha’ban. Fasting does provide a lot of benefits, especially for the body’s health. Therefore, we should multiply our fasting practice in the world. The intentions of fasting Monday Thursday are as follows:

“Nawaitu shauma yaumal itsnaini sunnatan lillahi ta’aalaa.”

Means :

“I intend to fast on Monday, sunnah for Allah ta’ala.”

“Nawaitu shauma yaumal khamiisi sunnatan lillahi ta’aalaa.”

Means :

“I intend to fast on Thursday, sunnah for Allah ta’ala.”
