Law of Married in a Mosque for Islam Couples

In Islam, marriage is one of the most sacred thing. It’s an important event in someone’s life, so it has to be as perfect as possible. A Muslim couple who is going to get married often choose mosque as their venue for akad.

As we know, mosque is the house of Allah SWT which is the place to worship and get connected to our Creator. It makes us questioned the law of married in a mosque. Is it really allowed or there are actually a law that many people don’t know about it.

Here are the explanation of the law, from various view and bases.

  1. Getting Married in Islam is Preferable

According to the majority of Islamic scholars, doing the marriage contract in a mosque is mustahhab or preferable. There are a hadith to prove that.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Announce the marriage and do it in the mosque and beat daff for that.” (Tirmidhi)

However, except for the part of announcing marriage, the hadith is categorized as da’eef or weak.

  1. Holding a Wedding Party is Not Makruh

First, the law if holding the wedding party in mosque. But it becomes haram when the party is included something that is against the sharia and Islam in general.

  1. The Marriage is Better to be Hold in the Morning

In Nihaayat al Muhtaaj, it is said that it is sunnah to get married in Shawwal as well as consumating it. It is allowed to do the marriage contract inside the mosque. There are some conditions, though. First it should be done in front of many people, and second, the marriage should be held at the beginning of the day.

  1. There Should be No Disrespectful Acts

As there is not explicit prohibition of the law or married in a mosque, many Muslims still believe that doing it inside the most is allowable. Among the disrespectful acts that is not allowed is beating the daff, singing nasheeed, or making another loud noises.

  1. Quran Recital is Not Mandatory

In a marriage contract validation ceremony, Quran recital is a part of it. Listening to Quran is indeed a blessing, but it’s not mandatory in a wedding ceremony. It can be skipped or replaced by speeches or other things as long as it doesn’t violate Islamic law. Reciting Quran in a wedding ceremony is considered bid’ah or innovation by modern Muslims.

  1. No Explicit Law Regarding the Matters

Islamic scholars also didn’t say that it’s haram, but there are certainly some rules to follow. As long as we do no harm in the mosque and not doing any forbidden and disrespectful act, it can be done. If someone is still not sure about it, then they can ask to a religious figure around them.

  1. Marriage Rituals Can be Done Literally Anywhere

As there are no laws that forbid marriage in the mosque, there is also no law about the urgency of it. The most important conditions for marriage are the groom, brides, guardian of the brides, as well as two witnesses to attend the nikaah contract. If those conditions are met, then a marriage can be performed right where they present at the moment.

They can hold the marriage in the house, while traveling, or any other places as long as the conditions are met.

  1. Fulfilling All the Conditions is the Most Important

Venue is not the most important aspect when two Muslims want to get married. Marriage can be held at any place if all the conditions are met. Conditions to Meet in Islamic Marriage

The validation of nikah is depended on whether the conditions are met or not. Here are the most important conditions to be fulfilled in order to hold marriage.

  • The man and woman must be willing to get married. A marriage cannot be held when two person are against it.
  • Nikah can’t be held in secrecy. It must be announced to so that it can be performed.
  • Mahr or dowry is another condition in an Islamic marriage. Mahr is vary according to the capability of the groom. It’s a natural gift to the bride.

After reading the explanation on law of getting married in a mosque, we know that is doesn’t has to be held in the mosque. Another places is also good as long as the conditions are met.

The Messenger of Allah says:

“There is no marriage without a supervisor (Wali) and two reliable witnesses. A marriage performed without these is void. If they couldn’t agree, the authorized officials are the supervisor.” (Abu Dawood)
