Every people by nature has a goal to fulfill immediately. Then if it doesn’t they might turn into anger or upset. To control everything that may something unwanted, there is something that we called patient. Islam teaches all Moslem being patient, which on how controlling anger etc. This article will define anything about patience in Islam.
Definition of Patience
Patience is a person’s capacity to endure and tolerate delay and the trouble. Sometimes it is a matter of anger. Having patience means a person remain calm, even when dealing with a so long time. It is involved in acceptance and tolerance. Patience in Islam called Sabr is the virtue of patience or endurance. It teaches to remain steadfast and keep doing the action in the goal of faith (Iman). It is as well to prevent us from despairing, panicking, to save our words from complaining, to prevent our hand from striking (of something or someone), in the time of our lowest point of life. It is when a Moslem is in patience, then it makes him/her being thankful to God (Shukr).

When Moslems need patient and relax to face the problem, then they should go through the patient and start praying. They should submissive all of the difficulties to Allah according to Quran 2:45 (Al Baqara):.
“And seek help through patience and prayer, and indeed, it is very difficult except for the humbly submissive (to Allah)”
It is also quoted in Quran 2 :158 (Al Baqara) about how Moslems must seek help through patience and prayer because Allah will be with the person who is patience.
“O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient one”
Allah test the ummah with all of human suffering of such as fear, hunger, poverty, problems of life. He then gives the name of patient one as a Sabirin. It is common if Moslem has a local disaster and calamity, such as relatives die, getting lost of the property and treasure then they must say “Inna lillahi wa Inna Ilaihi Raajiun” (All of the thing we belong is from Allah and to Him we must return). Allah always place the one who patient into the highest reward. They get as well the mercy, blessing and guidance from Allah. According to Quran 2: 155- 157 (Al Baqara):
“And certainly, We shall test you with something of fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives and fruits, but give glad tidings to as-Saabireen (the patient ones). Who, when afflicted with calamity, say: “Inna lillaahi wa Inna Ilaihi Raaji’un” (Verily to Allah we belong and verily, to Him we shall return). “They are those on whom are the Salawaat (i.e. who are blessed and will be forgiven) from their Lord, and (they are those who) receive His Mercy, and it is they who are the guided-ones.”

The good person believes that Allah has good for the people in every matter of his life. When someone is happy, he will express his gratitude to Allah by Shukr. When problems arise then he will show patient and thinks that there are a good thing and a good way for him.

Suhaib reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
“Wondrous is the affair of the believer for there is good for him in every matter and this is not the case with anyone except the believer. If he is happy, then he thanks Allah and thus there is good for him, and if he is harmed, then he shows patience and thus there is good for him” Source: Sahih Muslim 2999, Grade: Sahih.
The Prophet PBUH ever said as reported by Abu Sa’eed Al-Khudri:
“Whoever would be patient, then Allah will make him patient. There is no gift that is better and more comprehensive than patience.” Source: Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 1400, Grade: Sahih
From the conclusion of Messenger words, it is stated that a person who could be patient, Allah will grant him more patient and tawakkal. No better gift and more comprehensive except the patient.

Being patience may be easy to say but it needs the challenge to do it. It is about holding back to every uncomfortable situation. Sabr is to refrain from anxiety, anger, keeping from complaining and prevent our body from a mess.
There are some virtues of patience in Islam. The patient person will always with Allah. Allah will love people who keep patient to face the test given by Him. Allah will be with them to protect, to guard and to help them. Then Allah will appreciate to Sabr person as Taqwa in facing the test of Allah. And when a person keep patient, as follows:
“ Say, “O My slave who have believed, fear your Lord. For those who do good in this world is good, and the earth of Allah is spacious. Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without account.””
“And whoever is patient and forgives – indeed, is surely of the matters for determination”

“And We made from them the leaders guiding by Our command when they were patient and [when] they were certain by Our signs (in the Verses).”

Being patience is commonly the same of anger management. It is about self control and don’t let of emotion, bad temper, anger ruin our life. There are some ways Moslems should raise the patience when they face the hardship:

Only remember Allah when we intent to do some of the action. Every action with good intention will result the goodness. For instance, if we start praying, fasting or ablution concluded doing the religious performance, we have to do intention (niyat) because of Allah. So it is better in every situation of action, we have to say intention speak out or saying in the heart.
Quran reciting. Reciting Quran can be done anytime and anywhere, whether it is in the midday or the night, or after Fardh prayer, it will release you from anxiety. Try reciting Al-Waqiah, it will make your heart stronger. The surah is as well freeing you from the poverty. Recite Surah Al Baqara and it makes home feel peaceful and warm. Reading Quran is one of the forms of dhikr to Allah, so that our heart will be relieving from any tension and make the person calmer and relax.

Recommended (Sunnah) Fasting. In Ramadhan months, Moslems have obligatory fasting for a whole month, and it is known that it the pure month, Moslem should detoxify not only the body but also the soul from the sins of any bad deed we did before it. However, after Ramadan passed, Moslems are able to continue the fasting to keep their sabr. The recommended fasting in Islam is such as Monday and Thursday fasting. Since fasting can control our carnality, anger, bad temper, so Moslems don’t need to wait the Ramadhan month.
Contemplating and Dhikr. By contemplating and Dhikr, Moslems always remember God on their side in their hardest time. The form of dhikr might be reciting the tasbih (Subhanallah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar), salawat for praising our Messenger of Allah (Allahumma Salli ‘Alaa Sayidinaa Muhammadin Wa ‘Ala Ali Muhammadin Wa Sallim). By contemplating and Dhikr often after performing obligatory prayer, so that the heart will be calm and peaceful. (See also: Meditation in Islam)
Reading the story of the Prophets and their Companions. Allah chooses mankind to be His prophets with the qualified deeds and by their patience. Moreover, there are some Prophet who called Ulul Azmi which means those who have ultimate patience. The prophets who gain the name are Nuh (Noah), Ibrahim (Abraham), Musa (Moses), Isa (Jesus), and Mohammad (PBUH). They choose to be Ulul Azmi because they had an ultimate patience, which keeps being sabr when they faced the hard time to send the message revelation from Allah.
Surrender and Sincere to God (Ikhlas). The meaning of sincerity is What the persons say or act should be for the sake of Allah. When we sincere in anything that related to God, we surrender ourself to God and being patient when we go through the hardship.

Be Positive. Being positive in every action we take daily will surround us the success, the calming heart, the achievement. If we think as well act a positive way, then we keep optimistically can get through the hardship no matter what. In a short, our patience will increase.
