Prohibition of Drawing in Islam

As Prohibition of birthday celebration in Islam, many opinions also stated the prohibition of drawing, especially if it is a living things that has a soul. In this chance, this article will discuss about prohibition of drawing in Islam below:

1. It can cause shirk

As Prohibition of insurance in Islam and Prohibition of dancing in Islam, sometimes, drawing can be a medium to do shirk. For example, a rabid fan of an idol will collect her idol drawing and put it on the wall. Without noticing, she will adore him and it is higher than she praises Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala.

Worse, some drawings are became a God directly, such as Christian who humble and pray in front of drawing.  Na’udzubillahi mindzalik.

2. It can cause a slander (badness)

The drawing of living things can cause a slander or badness for those who view it, too. For example, a drawing that show awra of human. It can awake the lust of someone who view it. The law has been clear, it is haram if you draw something that can cause lust. It can bring others to bad deeds. Worse, it can make someone to do a rape. See how women’s role in Islam culture.

3. The hadith of Ibn Umar radhiallahu’anhuma

It is narrated from the hadith of Bukhari and Muslim, Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said :

“Those who draw these pictures (the picture of living things) will be punished in the Hereafter, and something will be said to them : ‘Revive what you have done!’” (Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim)

4. The hadith of Abdullah bin Mas’ud radhiallahu ‘anhu

In this hadith, Abdullah bin Mas’ud radhiallahu ‘anhu testified that he has heard Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said :

“Those who get the hardest torment in the Hereafter, on Allah’s side, are drawers.” (Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim)

5. The hadith of Abu Hurairah radhiallahu ‘anhu

It is narrated in the hadith of At-Tirmidzi, it is saidby Abu Hurairah radhiallahu ‘anhu that Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam has said :

“Gabriel came to me, he said : ‘Indeed, last night I came to you, but there was no thing that prevented me to entered the house that there was you in it, except (because) there was a statue of man and in that house, there was a qiram with drawing as a cover, besides that, there was a dog in that house. Then command someone to cut the head of statue in the door’s house, so its shape is like a tree, also command to cut that cover become two pillows that can be used as footing, and also command to get the dog out’.” Rasulullah did the instruction of Gabriel. 6. The hadith of Ibn Abbas Radiyallahu ‘anhu

This hadith explained about angels who are reluctant to enter the house because there are dogs and drawings in those houses. It is narrated by the hadith of Bukhari and Muslim, it is said that Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam has said :

“(Indeed we are) Angels do not enter a house that has dogs and drawings in it.” (Narrated by Bykhari and Muslim, with the lafadz of Muslim)

7. The hadith of Zaid bin Khalid

Another hadith also strengthen about angels who are reluctant to enter the house with dogs and statues or the drawings of living things.

It is narrated by the hadith of Muslim that :

“Angels will not enter the house with dogs and statues (drawings) in it.” (Narrated by Muslim)

8. The Hadith of Abi al Hayyaj Al Asadi

This hadith tells about some tips from Ali to erase all drawings in our houses. It is narrated by the hadith of Muslim, that Abu al Hayyaj al Asadi has said :

“Ali said to me :  Would you mind if I send you to things that I has been sent by Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam : “Do not you leave one picture, but you erase it and there is no one grave that stand out but you flatten it.” (Narrated by Muslim)

9. The hadith of Jabir Radhiyallahu ‘anhu

This hadith told about Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam who commanded Umar bin Khattab. He must erase all drawings in Ka’bah because Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam did not want to enter to Ka’bah until all of those drawings have been cleared.

It was narrated by Ahmad, Abu Dawud, Al Baihaqi and Ibn Hibban, it was said by Jabir Radiyallahu ‘anhu that :

“Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam commanded Umar bin Khattab (in the period of Fathu Mecca) when he was in Bath-ha’ to come to Ka’bah and erased all of drawings in it and Rasululllah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam did not enter until all of those drawings have been erased.” (Narrated by Ahmad, Abu Dawud, Al Baihaqi and Ibn Hibban)

10. The hadith of Abu Hurairah Radhiallahu ‘anhu

This hadith told about Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam who has informed the word of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala. Its contents about the most cruel man is those who imitate and create like His creations. Then in this hadith also explains about other things that are allowed to be drawn such as seed or wheat. Because Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala does not blow soul and give mind to other things except human and animal.

It was narrated by Bukhari and Muslim, Abu Hurairah Radhiyallahu ‘anhu has heard Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said :

“Allahh ‘Azza wa Jalla said : ‘Who is crueler than those who create like My creations?’, Then draw seed, grain or wheat.” (Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim)

11. The Hadith of Aisha Radhiallahu ‘anha

This hadith explained about Aisha Radhiallahu ‘anha. She told her story with the Prophet Muhammad Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam. Rasulullah saw did not like a curtain with drawing in their window. Even The Prophet Muhammad Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said that the hardest torment in the Doomsday will be given to those who presumtuoysly compare His creations. Then Aisha removed and cut it. She made it as a pillow. Then Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam did not comment anything.

It was narrated by Bukhari and Muslim, Siti Aisha Radhiallahu ‘anhu has said :

“Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam went home from Safar. At that time, I covered the window with a curtain that has a drawing (animate beings. When he saw it, his face changed. He said : “O Aisha, the hardest torment in the Doomsday will be given to those who presumptuously compare Allah’s creations”. Then I cut and made it one or two pillows.” (Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim)

Those are some prohibitions of drawing in Islam. If you love drawing, you can draw  anything except human and animals who have soul and mind. So, you will not get a hard torment in the Doomsday as Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said before. Amen.
