10 Prohibitions for Pregnant Women in Islam

Every pregnant women hope their pregnancy healthy. She can do childbirth and birth healthy baby. In Javanese, There are many prohibitions for pregnant women. For example, pregnant women is forbidden to mock disabled people, kill animals, sit in front of the door, take a bath at night, consume twin bananas, and many more. Religiously,  is there prohibition for pregnant women or not?


Actually, Islam never give special prohibition for pregnant women. But if you want to birth health, clever and godly baby, we should many do recitation during pregnancy and go away from vice.

  1. Leave Salat

When pregnancy, your body will be ill and stiff. You will get headache, emasculated and nausea. It can be caused by hormonal changes in your body. Although pregnant women feel all of that, she still have a duty to do salat. Mother can leave Ramadan fast (on the condition that you should change it with another day). But the law of Salat is still obligated for pregnant women. If you can’t stand to pray, you can sit. If you can’t sit, so you can pray with lying.

Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam has been asked about someone who got hemorrhoid, so he is difficult to stand when he want to do salat. He said,

“Pray while standing and if you can’t, pray while sitting and if you cannot do even that, then pray lying on your side.” (Bukhari)

  1. Consume Haram Foods

Every foods that mother ate, will enter into fetus blood. So that, pregnant women must go far away haram foods. Not only pregnant women but all of Moslem must go far away from haram foods. Because Allah is hate Moslem who ate haram foods. Besides that, haram foods can give bad effects for our body. You may also read eating habits in Islam.

In Quran, Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta ‘ala said : “And eat of what Allah has provided for you [which is] lawful and good. And fear Allah, in whom you are believers.”  (Q.S. Al-Maidah : 88)

Kind of haram foods is explained in Surah Al-Maidah :

“Prohibited to you are dead animals, bloods, the flesh of wine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah, and [those animals] killed by strangling or by a violent blow or by a head long fall or by the goring of horns, and those from which a wild animal has eaten, except what you [are able to] slaughter [before its death], and those which are sacrificed on stone altars.” (Q.S. Al-Maidah : 3)

“You who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful.” (Q.S. Al-Maidah : 90)

  1. Gossip and say a bad word

Same with Java advice, pregnant women is prohibited to say a bad word, such as insult and gossip someone. If she did it, I am afraid, it will happen to her baby. Besides that, gossip is prohibited by Islam.

Allah Ta’ala said :

“You who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.” (Q.S. Al-Hujurat : 12)

There is also an explain in Hadith, Nabi Sallallhu ‘alaihi wa sallam said :

“Do you know what is backbiting?” The Companions said : “ Allah and His Messenger know better.” There upon he said, “Backbiting is talking about your (Muslim) brother in a manner which he dislikes.” It was said to him : “What if my 9Muslim) brother is as I say.” He said, “if he is actually as you say, then that is backbiting; but if that is not in him, that is slandering.” (Muslim)

  1. Free your private part

Every women must close her private part. They may only show their face and palm. As same with pregnant women, They don’t free her private part.  Allah Ta’ala said :

“And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private part and not expose their edornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [ a portion of] their head covers over their chests and not expose their adornment.” (An-Nuur : 31)

“O Prophet, tell your wives, your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.” (Q.S. Al-Ahzab : 59)

  1. Listening Music

The law of listening music still become controversy between Islam figures . Half of them allow to listening music, and another say haram. But, it will be better if we minimize our habit to listening music. We can change it with listening Quran. Insha Allah your baby will be health, clever and godly person.

  1. Do little polytheism

Many people do some practice during pregnancy. You should avoid that rituals. If there is no guidance (for example theorem in Quran or hadith), you should not do that ritual.

  1. Fornicate

Fornicate is one of big sins. Of course, Moslem is prohibited to do adultery.  Both you are in pregnant or not, both male or female, you should avoid  adultery. Including small adulteries, such as you hold hand with someone who are not your mahram. Please don’t do it.

Allah Ta’ala said :

“And do not approach unlawful sexual intercourse. Indeed, it is ever an immorality and is evil as a way.” (Q.S. Al-Isra : 32)


Nabi Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said :

“There are three (types of) people to whom Allah will not speak on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them, nor look at them, and they will have a painful punishment. These are : Anaged man who commits Zina (illicit sexual act), a ruler who lies, and a proud poor person.” (H.R. Muslim)

  1. Preen too much when go outside from home

A woman who go out from home is prohibited to preen too much. Because When a woman who go out from home will be followed by Satan, so men will see her. And it can cause a slander.

It is explained in hadith :

“The woman is Awrah, so when she goes out, the Shaitan seeks to tempt her.” (At-Tirmidzi)

  • Prohibition of perfume on Woman

“Any woman who puts on perfume then passes by people so that they can smell her fragrance then she is an adulteress.” (An-Nasa’i and Ahmad)

  • Prohibition of tattoo

From Ibnu Umar radliyallah ‘anhu, Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wassalam said :

“Allah has cursed such a lady as lengthens (her or someone else’s) hair arificially or gets it lengthened and also a lady who tattoos (herself or someone else) or gets herself tattooed.” (Bukhari, Muslim and Tirmidzi)

  • Prohibition of gap teeth

Rasulullah s.a.w said :

“Allah has cursed those woman who make artificial spaces between their teeth for beauty, whereby they change Allah’s creation.” (Bukhari and Muslim)

  • Tint and lengthen nails

From Aisyah r.a., she said :

“A woman made a sign from behind a curtain to indicate that she had a letter for the Messenger of Allah. The Prophet closed his hand, saying: I do not know this is a man’s or a woman’s hand. She said: No, a woman. He said : If you were a woman, you would make a difference to your nails , meaning with henna.” (Abu Dawud and An-Nasa’i)

  • Connect hair

“Allah has cursed the lady who artificially lengthens (her or someone else’s) hair and also the one who gets her hair lengthened.” (Bukari)

  1. Go outside without mahram

When you go outside, you as a wife or pregnant woman should be accompanied by your husband. Its purpose avoid slander and more save. Except you go out near from your house such as buy vegetables.

Rasuluullah Shallallhu ‘Alaihi Wasallam said :

“The woman is Awrah, so when she goes out, the Satan seeks to tempt her.” (At-Tirmidzi)

  1. Perfidious to your husband

Pregnant women is prohibited to her husband. A husband have to do something good for your wife. Understand one another and invest Islamic values are a key to build a happy family.

From Abu Hurairah Ra. Shallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam said : “There are two types of people who will be punished in Hell and whom I have not seen : men having whips like the tails of cows and they will be beating people with them and women who will be dressed but appear to be naked, inviting to evil; and they themselves will be inclined to it. Their heads will appear like the humps of the Bactrian camel inclined to one side. They will not enter Jannah and they will not smell its fragrance which is perceptible from such and such distance. (Muslim)
