15 Prohibitions of Speculation in Islam

Speculation is like gambling, we can only think about whether it can win or not. This, of course, is not permissible in Islam. In Islam, speculation and gambling are haram.

The following below are some prohibitions of speculation in Islam along with its legal explanation in Islam.

1. Speculation is prohibited in Islam

Formerly speculation activities were carried out in the Jahiliyyah era (the era of ignorance). In here disbelievers used to make their wives or slaves for a bet in the match. Then, Allah says firmly in the holy book of Quran.

“O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful.”
Verse (5:90)

2. Acts that are prohibited by Allah SWT

The speculation activity is forbidden by Allah Almighty because there is a great sin and it has no benefit can be obtained for humans. So, here Allah says in the Quran. Please also view prohibitions of birthday celebration in Islam.

“They ask you about wine and gambling. Say, “In them is a great sin and [yet, some] benefit for people. But their sin is greater than their benefit.”

And they ask you what they should spend. Say, “The excess (beyond needs).” Thus Allah makes clear to you the verses [of revelation] that you might give thought.”  Verse (2:219)

3. Included in deception

A speculation is a deception act in order to cause hostility and hatred among humans. Speculating can also prevent humans from praying and not remembering the name of Allah Almighty. Below here, Allah already says in the Quran.

“Satan only wants to cause between you animosity and hatred through intoxicants and gambling and to avert you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer. So will you not desist?”  Verse (5:91)

4. Speculation is a disguise

The Prophet Muhammad also said that speculation is a disguise. Speculation is not real, this cannot be known to be true or false. Following below here, the Prophet Muhammad said in his hadith. For more information please read about the prohibition of cigarettes in Islam.

 “The Prophet. has banned muhaqalah, muzabanah, mukhabarah and tsunaiya unless known.”(Tirmidhi)

5. Speculation in trade

Are there speculations in trading? There, the following example is; a seller sells his merchandise. These merchandises may be held but may not be opened or inspected. Such trade practices are prohibited by the Prophet Muhammad. The following below here is the hadith.

Abu Said al Khudri related that

“The Prophet Muhammad PBUH  forbade the sale of the Mulamasah”. (Anas and Abu Hurairah). [AdSense-B]

6. The Prophet forbade selling the immature fruit

Continuing from the previous point, honest traders should allow buyers to check the seller’s merchandise (for example fruit), is this fruit ripe or not? In here, the Messenger of Allah forbade the seller if he sells immature fruit, then the fruit is not suitable for sale. The following below is the hadith.

“The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) prohibited selling trees until they were good (mature).” (Muslim)

7. A chance to get a lottery

Is winning a lottery also a form of speculation? Of course, winning a lottery or hoping to get a lottery is one form of speculation. This action is the same with gambling and gambling is one form of Satan’s act to lead us astray, the humans. Below here, Allah says in the Quran.

“O children of Adam, let not Satan tempt you as he removed your parents from Paradise, stripping them of their clothing to show them their private parts. Indeed, he sees you, he and his tribe, from where you do not see them. Indeed, We have made the devils allies to those who do not believe.”  Verse (7:27)

8. Intention to get rewards in the lottery

Every doing something is of course based on intention, the intention to get a prize from the lottery. With our intention to get a prize or lottery, this is wrong and it is prohibited by Islam. Of course, this practice is not recommended by Muslims, below here is the hadith.

“Indeed, every practice must be accompanied by intention, and every human being only gets results in harmony with what he intends.”  (Bukhari and Muslim).

9. It is an act of Satan

Indeed speculation is gambling and gambling is a form of satanic deeds. Satan then comes and deceives people and makes humans hostile to others. “Indeed, Satan is an enemy to you; so take him as an enemy. He only invites his party to be among the companions of the Blaze.” Verse (35:6)

10. It can cause hostility between humans

Prohibition of speculation in Islam can cause hostility among humans, one of which is war. For this reason, Muslims are not expected to do this, speculation is not necessarily true, and speculation may be wrong. For that we must cautious, the following below here Allah says in the Quran.

“And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided. And remember the favor of Allah upon you – when you were enemies and He brought your hearts together and you became, by His favor, brothers. And you were on the edge of a pit of the Fire, and He saved you from it. Thus does Allah make clear to you His verses that you may be guided.” Verse (3:103)

11. Makes us forget to Allah Almighty

Speculation can make us forget Allah Almighty, how can it be? Sometimes when speculating we can forget time, and we are busy with ourselves. It would be better when it is used to do dhikr (remembering the name of Allah) so that the time we use becomes more useful. So, below here Allah says in the Quran.

“………..They have forgotten Allah, so He has forgotten them [accordingly]. Indeed, the hypocrites – it is they who are defiantly disobedient.” Verse (9:67)

12. The punishment of someone who did speculation

In the case of speculation or gambling, there is an element of consuming other people’s assets or money in the wrong way. Indeed, Allah has warned and forbade this. Below here Allah says in the Quran.

“And do not consume one another’s wealth unjustly or send it [in bribery] to the rulers in order that (they might aid) you (to) consume a portion of the wealth of the people in sin, while you know (it is unlawful).” Verse (2:188)

13. The reward of Allah Almighty

Gharar or speculation in Islam is used by disbelievers to make as much profit as possible. This is certainly prohibited by Allah and also the Prophet Muhammad.

Indeed, buying and selling activities with this speculation have been done on Muslims at that time and now. Anyone who does it as little as possible will be rewarded with something in common. Below here, Allah says in the Quran.

“So whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it,8. And whoever does an atom’s weight of evil will see it.”  Verse (99:7-8)

14. Asking forgiveness for Allah

Then what can we do to cleanse our sins from doing all kinds of speculations? The first way is to beg forgiveness to Allah Almighty, remember the name of Allah and do repentance. With this, we will be forgiven of the sins we have committed. Below here, Allah says in the Quran. Check also of the secret power of Asmaul Husna, it is the best way to seek forgiveness to Allah.

“And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.”  Verse (24:31)

15. Do Allah’s commands

The second way is to do Allah’s commands, both doing the five daily prayers, reading the holy verses of the Quran and remembering the name of Allah.

“ Except for those who repent, believe and do righteous work. For them, Allah will replace their evil deeds with good. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.” Verse (25:70)

Hopefully, this 15 prohibitions on speculation in Islam can benefit us all, especially for Muslims. A speculation is a vague form of activity that is not necessarily true or false. Instead of speculating, we should ask for Allah’s guidance, because Allah is The Most Knowing and Merciful.
