In the holy book of shahihain by Abu Hurairah, there is a man asked the Prophet:
“O Rasulullah, who are among all human beings should I interact more properly?” Rasulullah replied, “Your mother” He asked again: “Then who else?” The Prophet said : “Your mother” The man repeats his question: “Then who else?” The Prophet replied: “Your mother” He repeated the question again: “Then who?” Rasulullah SAW answered: “Your father”.
From that story, it is very clear right that the command to respecting parents, especially mothers has been ordered since a long time ago by Rasulullah. Since inside the womb, mother has been struggling hard to keep us while in the womb. Making us human beings in accordance with the Purpose of Human Creation, the Process of Human Creation, The Nature of Human Creation, the Concept of Human in Islam, and Humanity According to Islam with the function of religion.
Mother will be willing to do anything to make her child get the best protection and affection. While the father is trying so hard to earn a living solely to feed and meet all the needs of his child. So respecting parents is a reward that we must do for their happiness.
Respecting or devoting to parents is not as hard as our parents already did. We just need to always speak in gentle way and respect them nicely. Devoting also not only by words, but also in the form of act like helping and ease the parents affairs and never argue when ask by them. We also need to understand the importance of devotion to parents in Islam.
While devoting with treasure is by meet all the parents needs that are required by them. As we know, when reaching in old age, parents will experience weaknesses to their body and mind so that sometimes they are very troublesome.
In such circumstances, Allah strictly forbade to repel on parents even with a light words. We must keep speaking and serve them well. Similarly, when they die, our kindness to them, are shown by always praying for them.
The Qur’an Verses of Respecting Parents
1. Surah Al-Isra
“And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Wheter one or both of them reach old age (while) with you, say not to them (so much as), “uff”, and do not repel them but speak to them a noble world.” (QS. Al-Isra : 23)
“And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, “My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up (when i was) small.” (QS. Al-Isra : 24)
2. Surah An-Nisa
“Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and to parents do good, and to relatives, orphans, the needy, the near neighbor, the neighbor farther away, the companion at your side, the traveler, and those whom your right hands possess. Indeed, Allah does not like those who are self-deluding and boastful.” (QS. An-Nisa : 36)

3. Surah Luqman
“And We have enjoined upon man (care) for his parents. His mother carried him, (increasing her) in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents, to Me is the (final) destination.” (QS. Luqman : 14)
“But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them but accompany them in (this) world with apporiate kindness and follow the way of those who turn back to Me (in repentance). Then to Me will be your return, and I will inform you about what you used to do.” (QS. Luqman : 15)

4. Surah Al-‘Ankabut
“And We have enjoined upon man goodness to parents. But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them. To Me is your return, and I will inform you about what you used to do.” (QS. Al-‘Ankabut : 8)

5. Surah Al-Ahqaf
“And We have enjoined upon man, to his parents, good treatment. His mother carried him with hadrship and gave birth to him with hardship, and this gestation and weaning (period) is thirty months. (He grows) until, when he reaches maturity and reaches (the age of) forty years, he says, “My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to work righteousness of which You will approve and make righteous for me my offspring. Indeed, I have repented to You, and indeed, I am of the Muslims.” (QS. Al-Ahqaf : 15)
“Those are the ones from whom We will accept the best of what they did and overlook their misdeeds, (their being) among the companions of Paradise. (That is) the promise of truth which they had been promised.” (QS. Al-Ahqaf : 16)

“But one who says to his parents, “Uff to you, do you promise me that I will be brought forth (from the earth) when generations before me have already passed on (into oblivion)?” while they call to Allah for help and said, “Woe to you! Believe! Indeed, the promise of Allah is truth, “But he says, “This is not but legends of the former people.” (QS. Al-Ahqaf : 17)
6. Surah Al-Baqarah
“They ask you, (O Muhammad), what they should spend. Say, “Whatever you spend of goods is (to be) for parents and relatives and orphans and the needy and the traveler. And whatever you do of good – indeed, Allah is Knowing of it.” (QS. Al-Baqarah : 215)
7. Hadith Narrated by Abu Dawud
“O Rasulullah, is there still a way of devotion to parents after they die?” He replied, “Yes, by praying, asking for forgiveness for them, carrying out their will, connecting relationships that can not be connected except their way and glorifying their friends.”

8. Shahihain Holy Book of Asma’ binti Abu Bakar ra
In this holy book explained that when Abu Bakar ra asked to Rasulullah about his mother who is idolatry (polytheism), but he want to connect with her.
“O Rasulullah, my mother came and want to connect with my daughter, whether I can connect a relation back with my mother?” Rasulullah replied “Yes connect it.”
9. Shahihain Holy Book of Abdullah bin Mas’ud
“I asked the Prophet,” What is the main deeds? “He replied,” Praying in time. “I asked again:” Then what else? “He replied,” Devote toward parents. “I asked again,” Then what else? “He replied,” Jihad in the way of Allah.”
10. Hadith Narrated by Snad Jayyid
Someone asked to Rasulullah,
“O Rasulullah, I want to perform jihad but I can not do it.” He replied: “Are your parents still alive?” He replied, “Yes, my mother is.” He said: “Meet Allah in state of devotion to parents, when you do that, its equal with you have performed hajj, umrah and jihad.”
Ways to Respect Your Parents
These are things we should do to perform good toward our parents:
- Ask for something according to their capabilities and abilities.
- Does not show an annoyed face if his wish is not fulfilled by both parents.
- Help both parents to do something without being ordered.
- Do not quarrel with fellow brothers or sisters with a loud voice, snap at each other even fighting since this will hurt parents.
- Refusing to do something ordered by parents with a loud rejection voice and a sour face.
- Do not use parents belonging without their permission.
- Do not sit in a place higher than them.
- No loud voice, moreover saying only “ah” is forbidden by Allah.
- Not being arrogant toward parents.
- Do not let the parents in trouble and poverty.
- Do not neglecting parents alone at home.
- Always make time to diligently stay in touch and visit them.
- Always pray of goodness toward both parents by asking for mercy and forgiveness to Allah SWT.
- Always connecting on the relationship with parents relatives or friends after their death.
- No repel them in a loud voice.
