In this modern day, the cases of suicide are familiar. Many people persecute themselves because they feel depression and stress with their lives. May be it is caused by work, love or otherwise. That persons usually do not have strong faith. They are influenced easily by Satan’s whisper. They are despairing and acting foolish as if there was no God. Though obviously self-injury is an act of tyranny that does not bring any benefit at all.
Well, here is an explanation about the law of self-injury in Islam.
The Law of Self-Injury in Islam
The majority of Ulama argue that the law of self-injury is haram. This is because the act of self-injury is including to persecution, which can bring mudharat without any benefits. The people who did self-injury is those whose have a weak faith.
Allah S.W.T said :
“And We did not wrong them, but they wronged themselves. And they were not availed at all by their gods which they invoked other than Allah when there came the command of your Lord. And they did not increase them in other than ruin.” (Hud : 101)
The Prohibition Arguments about Self-Injury
There are many syar’i arguments, either verses of Quran or hadith explain that self-injury is a sin which was prohibited by Allah Ta’ala. Among that arguments are
“But as for those who believed and did righteous deeds, He will give them in full their rewards, and Allah does not like the wrongdoers.” (Ali Imran : 57)
“And [recall], when Moses said to his people, “O my people, indeed you have wronged yourselves by your taking the calf [for worship]. So repent to your Creator and kill yourselves. That is best for [all of] you in the sight of your Creator.” The He accepted your repentance; indeed, He is the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful.” (Al-Baqarah : 54)
“Allah would not ever have wronged them, but they were wronging themselves.” (Ar Rum : 9)
“O you who have believed, do not consume one another’s wealth unjustly but only [in lawful] business by mutual consent. And do not kill yourselves [or one another]. Indeed, Allah is to you ever Merciful.” (An-Nisa : 29)
“Then perhaps you would kill yourself through grief over them, [O Muhammad], if they do not believe in this message, [and] out of sorrow.” (Al-Kahfi : 6)
Next, there are arguments from hadith, they are : [AdSense-B]
From Abu Hurairah ra, Rasulullah saw said :
“Whoever suicide with a sharp weapon, then that weapon will be stabbed by his own hand to his stomach in hell forever; and whoever suicide with poison, then he will drink it bit by bit in hell forever; and whoever suicide with falling himself from mountain, then he will fall himself later (repeatedly) to hell forever.” (Muslim)
From Syaiban ra, he heard Hasan ra told :
“In the past, there was a man who out a boil. When he could not resist the pain, he prodded his boil with an arrow, it was causing much blood until he died. Then your Lord said : I forbid him the heaven,” (because he intentionally committed suicide). Then Hasan went to mosque and said, “By Allah! Jundab told that hadith to me from the Messenger of Allah in this mosque.” (Muslim)
A story of friends who hurt himself, then Muhammad saw asked for forgiveness for him
From Jabir that Ath-Thufail bin ‘Amr ad-Dausi came to the Prophet saw said :
“O Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam, do you want to take refuge in a strong fort? That fort belonged to Daus tribe in the days of ignorance.” But the Prophet saw did not accept that offer because the goodness that Allah Almighty has prepared for the Anshar.
[AdSense-A] When the Prophet saw emigrated to Medina, Ath-Thufail bin ‘Amr also emigrated, with a man from his tribe (Daus). Then they did not like to live in Medina. That man was sick and he became anxious. He toook his arrow, then cut the joints of his fingers. Two of his hand drained blood and he died.
Then Ath-Thufail bin ‘Amr dreamed that he saw his friend in good condition, but he covered his hands. So Ath-Thufail bin ‘Amr asked to him :
“What has your Rabb done to you?”.
He answered :
“He has forgiven me for of my hijrah to his Prophet saw.”
Then Ath-Thufail asked again :
“why did I see that you cover your hands?”
He answered : Someone told me,
“We did not fix your part (body) that you have damaged (yourself).”
Then Ath-Thufail told his dream too the Prophet saw, so Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam prayed : “O Allah Almighty, forgive his two hands too.” (Muslim)
From explanation above, it has been clear that the act of self-injury is not allowed in Islam. Even Allah Ta’ala threatens to give a punishment to those who do persecution or self-destruction. Among them are :
“And whoever does that in aggression and injustice – then We will drive him into a Fire. And that, for Allah, is [always] easy.” (An-Nisa : 30)
Someone who suicide with drinking a poison, then iin the hell, he will also drink that poison without stopping. If he stabbed himself with a sharp weapon, then in the hell, he will also be stabbed many times. In essence, Everything we do, it will return to ourselves in the hereafter. Naudzubillah Mindzalik.
From Tsabit bin Dhahhak Ra, Rasulullah saw said,
“Whoever kill himself with something in this world, then he will be hurt with that weapon in the hereafter.” (Bukhari and Muslim)
From Jundub bin Abdullah said, the Prophet saw said :
“Formerly to the people before you, there was a man who was wounded. He was impatient, then he took a knife and he cut his hands. His blood have not dried, but the man died. Then Allah ta’ala said : My servant has preceded Me with his life, so i forbade him heaven.” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)
Every human who lives in the world can not be separated from trials. This condition is very reasonable. There are people who get mild, moderate and severe trials. All that happens solely because Allah Ta’ala wants to test how strong our faith. As His Word :
“Do the people think that they will be left to say, “We believe” and they will not be tried? (Al-Ankabut : 2)
There are some things that the faithful must do to deal with trials :
Trials must be faced with patience and effort. We have to believe that there is always wisdoms from every case.
Allah Ta’ala said :
“And seek help through patience and prayer, and indeed, it is difficult except for the humbly submissive [to Allah].” (Al-Baqarah : 45)
